Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Honestly, you're not alone. There's even current students in favor of PC homecoming. Not even so much the PC-ness, but that they just like the standard athletics-focused Homecoming better.

Eh, if it's what the students really want I'm okay with it I guess. Still furious with Tech for the underhanded move.
I agree that the underhanded bribery is complete BS.

What changes to winter carnival are being proposed?
From facebook, I don't remember who's post, possibly Flashy Man's, the rumor was that they are trying to eliminate the all-nighter.

They do that and there will be riots. I am not kidding.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

The hobo thing was really stupid. I never got the point of it and never had any desire to participate in it. I think that a normal homecoming more focused on school spirit and supporting Tech Athletics will be a great change.

On the other hand, if they change Winter Carnival, like I've seen mentioned on facebook, I will feel the same way as you, Twitch. To me, Carnival is THE Tech tradition that should be preserved. Everything from the statues, to the hockey, the all-nighter, the other various competitions, torch parade, etc. should be left untouched.

I laugh that you talk about school spirit up there. Very few people have it. Outside of those of us in the band and the few that stick with the Misfits, they are a bunch of bandwagon jackwagon *******es. Have you seen the student attendance at a football game? Pathetic, and that is usually the main home game for homecoming. I am glad that there is legitimate hockey for homecoming this year, it is about **** time, but it doesn't always happen (stupid exhibitions that they charge full price for). Hockey attendance and spirit drops to pretty much nothing if they start to lose. There has never been a student section in basketball, unless you count bandwagon fans that show up for the NCAA tourney.

So Tech wants to go to a more traditional, high school-style rah rah Tech homecoming. I guess that is fine. Michigan Tech takes out things that makes it different from other schools, it wants to be just like every other school. But I think they are delusional if they think that is going to generate one more ounce of spirit on campus. They already have most of us (edit: us on this board and a few other sports fans) going to the games, and the rest of the student body could care less. Blame the hill, blame computer games, blame whatever, but Tech is not an athletic school.

If they take away the All Nighter or alter Winter Carnival, well, then they can consider themselves disowned. It will be like the Huskies exist without a school in the background, because Michigan Tech would be dead to me.

Personally this is how academia operates. No one ever says no to your face.
I would have liked them to put out something that said, we are considering.. blah de blah but that is wishful thinking. having said that, change is inevitable. I liked the hobos and I will miss that as well as the all nighter which I don't see how they can outlaw. I'd be out there anyway.

I think the idea would be to try to improve on the lack of school spirit, because what you say is exactly right. Really, anything at this point would be an improvement. I'm not ready to say that changing the direction of homecoming has no chance of building more support among students for Tech athletics.

Why doesn't the school just have World of Warcraft night at the homecoming game(s)? Guaranteed sell out!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

For those interested, tSBFitW took the hobo bribe. Still trying to confirm the amount, but apparently it was pretty darn huge. I'm ashamed, but understanding. The reasoning was that we're flat broke and our stuff is breaking (one of our baritones is over 100 years old) and secondly, if we turn down the offer and ask for more funding later they can play the "well if you're so desperate for more money, why did you turn down our Homecoming offer?" card.

The band needs to twist this from old sKool (Hobo) to new school (Robo). Everyone dresses up in tin foil covered boxes while strains of Mr Roboto are played by the band.

Oh Yeah! I can see it now - 150 drunken robots taking over the homecoming parade. Just think of the stuff engineers could do with that kind of theme...

Yeah, that's downright ****ing blasphemy.... I have a camel back that still tastes like tequila due to the all-nighter... hehe.

Off topic... tricky ******** put the USCHO extra button where the forum one was, that's annoying as hell....

Update your death pools everyone. Pearson doesn't want to get to 26 players this season, but to 28 or 29 after the exhibition game.
