Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Someone really needs to edit this out of wikipedia:

Recently, the team has attempted to undergo a renaissance under the leadership of former MTU athlete Jamie Russell. The team is attempting to gain attendance through the use of the newly developed “Experience Tech” fee, which appropriates 750 free hockey tickets for students.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

I'm no fan of St Cloud but it will be blow to the wcha tournament not to have them for sure. We all need that to be successful or the lack of money will have an effect.

As far as the GLI, generally it's been an eastern team and only recently have wcha teams been invited. I'd much rather an eastern team anyway.
I can see mel getting us a Big ten non con game or two other than the GLI, and I'd like to see an eastern team every year, plus Duluth. that would pretty much do it I would think.
I think it's really important going forward for us to have a good team. I don't see the bhhc getting any better recruits than they had previously.

I wouldn't count my chickens wins wise at all. I think that is a mistake. Every team in the wcha is committed to playing good hockey and they will not be pushovers at all. The era of the frozen budget is over imho, for everyone.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

While it used to bother me when the top end kids chose MJ over NCAA, it now amuses me for non other than to make the so called "elite" NCAA programs face the fact that they are not (a good portion of) the top players first choice. So while everyone thinks that the new conferences are going to have a major effect on recruiting, if the top end kids continue as a majority to chose MJ, IMO the hierarchy in college hockey talent is not going to be of the same magnitude from top to bottom as in college football or basketball where NCAA is the only option. Factor in that the NCAA hockey format is completely different than basketball, that MTU's chances of an autobid for winning the conference tourney will increase significantly, and that with a two game winning streak you can make the final four, I just don't see much for negatives in this whole realignment for MTU beside the loss of the WCHA final five $$'s which were probably disappearing with UMINN and UW leaving anyway.
Yep, since the BHHC announcement I've become a huge fan of MJ. I hope they steal all of the top talent away from the d bags at UND and DU.

With nearly a week of on ice with the coaches is anyone hearing anything good?

Also, does anyone know what Sturos's status is. I notice he is not on Heisenberg's 2012 list of Tech recruits?

Heisenberg doesn't do a very good job of dealing with players set for one year that get pushed back late. I'm pretty sure (I can't find my notes on the subject) that Sturos was pushed back to 2012-13...not really sure he will ever make it to MTU since he wasn't recruited by Mel but we shall see.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Looks like Pearson would like the whittle the team down to 26 players from 33. Time to start a death pool.

I'm going to guess that those guys combined split maybe 2 full scholarship equivalents.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

I'm almost postive I remember seeing him at one when I was in school...

I didn't know they had stopped coming, I always thought it was cool that they did. But I've not been to one since I've been living in this evil state.

Curious George attended luncheons regularly, then got his panties bunched about us beating them - remember the trashed hotel rooms and George ordering out for ice cream. I think the move away from inviting the coaches was Jamie Russell's - he wanted to be able to talk more openly with the fans and not have the opposing coaches sitting and listening to him. I miss them though. there were some great moments - Sertie, Hill, Kyle.

Probably but they are taken care of for the year? Sorry for the guys but it does show tMEL means business.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

Yeah it's a prediction, but whoever falls below the line there will be some people with scholarships and giwan is just wondering if they're taken care of for the year or the semester or what.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

For those interested, tSBFitW took the hobo bribe. Still trying to confirm the amount, but apparently it was pretty darn huge.

I'm ashamed, but understanding. The reasoning was that we're flat broke and our stuff is breaking (one of our baritones is over 100 years old) and secondly, if we turn down the offer and ask for more funding later they can play the "well if you're so desperate for more money, why did you turn down our Homecoming offer?" card.

I suspect it was doomed to happen anyway. MeanE said that it was probably either we take the money and drop the hobo, or refuse the money and they find some OTHER way to make us drop the hobo.

Furious with my alma mater for doing it this way, however. They've just kissed this employed alumni's future donations goodbye.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason III: Two Years To Prove It Can Be Done

The hobo thing was really stupid. I never got the point of it and never had any desire to participate in it. I think that a normal homecoming more focused on school spirit and supporting Tech Athletics will be a great change.

On the other hand, if they change Winter Carnival, like I've seen mentioned on facebook, I will feel the same way as you, Twitch. To me, Carnival is THE Tech tradition that should be preserved. Everything from the statues, to the hockey, the all-nighter, the other various competitions, torch parade, etc. should be left untouched.

Honestly, you're not alone. There's even current students in favor of PC homecoming. Not even so much the PC-ness, but that they just like the standard athletics-focused Homecoming better.

Eh, if it's what the students really want I'm okay with it I guess. Still furious with Tech for the underhanded move.

What changes to winter carnival are being proposed?
