I'll bite...
1. He played for the Badgers and his father is, of course, the legendary "Badger Bob" Johnson. Why would he give up a nice gig at Wisconsin, his alma mater and a school whose women's team he has coached to four straight title appearances and three national championships, to move up to Houghton and theoretically turn our program around? It seems to me that if he does eventually want a D1 Men's job, he would hold out for a bigger name program with the ability to garner much greater institutional support, and might even prefer to start by getting a lead assistant role at a major men's program.
2. He coaches women's hockey, a sport with approximately 25 teams at the D1 level (less than half that of D1 Men's) and no competition from professional and semi-professional leagues. He has the added bonus of recruiting for a Big Ten institution. How would his recruiting abilities here at little old Michigan Tech be any greater than JR's?
3. Why on earth would you suggest changing coaching staffs right now, a month and a half before the season begins? That would do nothing more than virtually guarantee another last place finish. We'd have to spend another seven years switching to a new head coach's system of play and building up the recruiting connections again. We are finally at the point where the quality of our incoming recruits has vastly improved over the past three seasons, and have simply had the misfortune of our two best finds either hitting academic roadblocks or being lured away by a pro contract. In the near future, I believe we will finally get one of these "blue chippers" on campus and in a Tech sweater. We have to catch a break at some point.
The only thing that is clear here, JSR, is that you jump to conclusions much too hastily. This year, we should see a marked improvement in the team's play and their record. With a healthy roster, winning more than two conference games should not be a struggle.
