Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

So, asking again, why are we getting a new jersey or new jerseys again after only a year?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Wow, that is very disappointing. Whatever happened to the idea that the invite team is an upper-level team from the east coast? :(

They've had an East Coast invitee 10 times over the past 20 years.

Hockey knowledge around the Joe is limited to the Red Wings UM and MSU. Most wouldn't know an east coast team if it bit them in the ***

Right, 50% of the time. These next 4 years is 0% of the time. Huge difference. I don't see myself traveling to the GLI anytime soon with that lineup.

You're not going to find that kind of fun in Huntsville. :/

GFM

Obviously, I have mostly MN @ Tech memories....Dancing Girl and Friend dancing on bar, a demand made by the DT staff, before they are served a drop of alcohol...
KBC tours (go ahead have a beer, here's a fresh can off the canning line!)
Singing "Don't Stop Believing" at the Ambo during tInvasion (and scaring off a group of snowmobilers...)
Getting the best suite in the house for the MN game (and then getting denied the next year; they didn't want such a presence of opposing fans in that spot)
Sitting amongst the Misfits for the 2nd period of MN games
tDon giving the Death Stare to Boosh after he yelled "It's 7:28, and Tony Lucia STILL SUCKS" right when arena went dead quiet.

Which team is more likely to bring more fans, friends and alumni? Boston College, Maine, Western, Northern? Based upon past appearances at the Joe, Western will get at least 3,000 in and Northern should be good for 4,000 or more, especially since it will be 3 1/2 years since they will have played in the area and 5 1/2 since their last trip to the Joe. There's no way New Hampshire or Northeastern or BC brings anywhere near that.

I fully understand this argument, but you seem to not understand mine. The tournament is more interesting, it is more prestigious and it is more entertaining when a team from out of the area is the 4th team. I am much less interested in watching an all-Michigan tournament than I am watching the traditional GLI. So I won't be attending.

But without you there who will make a ton of unnecessary pot shots at Detroit!? :(

I promise you, I am not the only person that realizes that Detroit is a complete pile of ****.

Apples and oranges - both views are correct. It is more interesting with a non Michigan team in the mix and not necessarily an eastern team. WCHA teams were the 4th team 4 times since 2001. But attendance trumps interest for Olympia Entertainment (a/k/a Illitch). After years of attending the GLI and the CCHA Finals at the Joe it seems clear fan base and travel distance affects attendance. One thing for sure is that "Hockeytown" and Detroit (Free Press, News, whatever) do not properly promote either tournament, and local interest is weak.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I seriously doubt the WMU brings a ton more fans than BC or UNH. Marginally more, maybe. But what WMU does have is a very cozy relationship with olympia entertainment and wmu wants in, so they are in.

I am also disappointed that the national character of this tourney has been compromised. it's really too bad. It's been a national level tourney for many years and the east coast teams make it the prestigious event that it is.

I would bet that wmu feels it will help their recruiting. Personally once they are at the bottom of their league for a couple for years, how many fans are they going to draw.
