Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I seriously doubt the WMU brings a ton more fans than BC or UNH. Marginally more, maybe. But what WMU does have is a very cozy relationship with olympia entertainment and wmu wants in, so they are in.

I have to disagree with you there. Far more Broncos fans in attendance last year, than BC fans the year before. There were at least two full sections of what appeared to be mostly WMU students within shouting distance of the Pep Band, and they were very audible (until the second Tech goal ;)). Local interest in the tourney was definitely up last season (though not anywhere near what it used to be).

This tourney was a big deal when the CCHA was at its strongest, from the late 80s to the late 90s, and interest in UM/MSU hockey was at its highest. Now, State's team is no longer an annual contender (at a school where basketball and football are always king), and Michigan's team hasn't done much of note on the national stage in the past decade (apart from the 2011 title game appearance).

Minnesota's doing the Minnesota Cup thing. why shouldn't Michigan? I think it will draw more fans.

wasn't last year great? and I was watching on TV and cried when we hoisted the trophy. lets hope that trophy finds a permanent home at Tech!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

while we await new jerseys/potential lines/goalie coaches/games

going to share some extreme Tech fan stories. please add to.

Dorm Rat getting arrested in St, Clouud. "hey, over here"
Dorm Rat's epic DU to Denver International walk
huskyfans loaning a car they didn't own to Misfits they didnt know and Misfits driving it to the top of Pike's Peak in the snow
MacD and huskyfans -30 trip to Lakehead in Thunder Bay. great games, awesome fights, good company, cool old school arena, actually, cold old school arena, eating Chinese at a curling club.

just scratched the surface, I'm sure. more please?

-Tech scores twice and Brian Elliott gets pulled 1:41 into the 2007 UW @ Tech Saturday game. Twitch yells after him, "Hey Elliott! Are you done already?! It's OK, it happens to every guy once in awhile!" I own the first of the two pucks he let in. Rob Green may or may not still have the other one.

-Speaking of which, Nathan Lawson. :D

-December 14, 2007 aka tInvasion 1.0 aka "Fight Night at the Dingleberry" aka The Worst Hockey Game Ever

-Using the "Le Sieve!" chant on JP Lamoureux

-Staying at the creeptastic Thrifty Motel on the first trip to St. Cloud (I honestly didn't know any better), populated with every transient drunk and drug user in Stearns and Sherburne County. Somehow didn't lose my wallet and/or get my throat slit. The second trip, I made sure to bump up to the Best Western.

-Ordering the large fries at Val's, only to have a gust of wind spill them onto the parking lot before I had a chance to eat more than about ten of them (I guess Mother Nature was looking out for my cholesterol that day). Then Brent proceeding to eat a few off the top of the pile after it hit the ground.

-Drinking with Red Cloud in the Martini Lounge at the Red Carpet wearing my hockey jersey and stripes, while all the other customers followed the dress code. Somehow, I always found a way to make that cowtown a mildly interesting place.

Do any of y'all know Nick Laurila? He's our new ops guy. He has big shoes to fill with all the work that Tim Flynn did.

I'm sad to hear he left. Must be a very new hire huh? He did a good job at his role at Michigan Tech. Certainly more responsive than Ian Marks or most people in the SID office. If he can adapt to the responsibilities of his knew role there versus what he did at Michigan Tech, you should be in good hands, although I have no idea how big these shoes are that he needs to fill ;)

I promise you, I am not the only person that realizes that Detroit is a complete pile of ****.

That's funny, I've been there 7 or 8 times over the past five years. I've always stayed downtown and always had a great time. I've never felt as if my safety were compromised and found many great places to eat, drink and be merry and met s lot of really nice people. I'll be back there for the Lions/ Packers game Thanksgiving Day and can't wait to get there. The town has always been a terrific experience and I'm really impressed at the improvements that have been made over the last decade.

Well, no one had really done the job before Tim Flynn made it into what it is now. I'm sure that Nick will bring his own skillset to bear. I'm glad that we're getting an experienced video guy coming in. Flynn's joining Kurt Kleinendorst as the video guy at Iowa.

Metro Huntsville is almost half as big as Edmonton proper. ;) We have a nice mall.

Ever take a limo to Sugar Daddies at 2:30AM?

Can't say that I have.

It's better to just let him go when he's on an anti-Detroit rant, you're never going to change his opinion. The way he goes on, you'd think a visit to North Korea would be better. :)

Well, I'm happy for you. It's still a ****hole city.

Who would you invite to the GLI in 2017?

Ohio State
Maine
Harvard
North Dakota

Ohio State or North Dakota. It would be fun seeing Michigan play tOSU for third place, but UND will most likely be a talented Top 10 team, potentially fresh off a few exam week arrests. ;)

Ohio State? Seriously?!? A school that sends its marching band out onto the ice between periods?

OSU is the outdoor game at MN, and the fans for the most part are meh, if not downright angry about it.

Any place is what you make it for yourself. I can have a great time in Houghton, Fairbanks, St Cloud, Huntsville, Minneapolis or Bowling Green. The places some refer to as ****holes are the places in which they don't posess the intellect to find a good time. You're certainly entitled to your opinion. It may be a ****hole to you, but only because you so choose.
