A few years ago, UAF had great defense and goaltending, but couldn't score for anything. 1-0 and 2-1 games, one way or the other, were common. I think that was mostly a result of Ferguson making the most with what he had as he took over the team. The past few years have generally(without looking at stats, just a gut feeling) been higher scoring, faster paced, but with a considerable drop off in defense. I get the feeling that the fast paced, high scoring style is what he's aiming for.
My impression has been that Fairbanks plays strong defense, as opposed to "good skating"/"entertaining" (am I wrong?).
