Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I think there was some discussion back when JJ first signed that he can't play in the minors this season. He either had to make the Edmonton roster or he would end up in the WHL.
BTW - If anyone else is working the MTU career fair today, feel free to stop by the Twin City Fan booth today and say hi. Talking hockey is always more fun than collecting resumes.

i believe you have to be 20 years of age to play in the AHL.

The question was because he is canadian and was playing college hockey. The key is that he wasn't playing college when drafted so then he has to follow CHL rules which state if he doesn't make the NHL, he has to be returned to the WHL/OHL until he is 20...if he had already been at Michigan Tech when drafted, this rule would not apply and he could be at the ECHL or AHL.

Here's the media poll:
1. Minn St., 2. Ferris, 3. UA(F), 4. BG, 5. MTU 6. NMU, 7. LSSU, 8. Bemidji, 9. UAA, 10. UAH.
Time will tell, but I think it's mostly interesting for what it says about the media expectations. We'll see. I do agree Tech has a good shot at the top 5.

Bemidji got a first place vote. Apparently, the eligibility requirements for voting were not that strict.

But not based on the Bemidji vote, I actually think they're underrated. And doesn't Bemidji usually prove it against UNO?

At least we were picked ahead of Northern.

Tech will be ranked third in the coach poll to be released this morning, receiving one first place vote and trailing Ferris by a point. Mankato obviously in first.

5th? Hopefully we can exceed expectations. Even in the nWCHA we are not picked to win home ice...

Nope. That's the simple explanation to the agreement the CHL and NHL has.

What is the minimum age for an AHL player?

Per AHL By-Laws, the age limit for eligibility to compete in the American Hockey League is 18 years or over, on or before September 15 of each season of competition.

The "not old enough" is a simple way of saying that major junior kids from the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL drafted by an NHL team cannot be poached away from the CHL for development until they turn 20 years old and/or played in the CHL for four years. The only exception to the age rule is that the kid MUST be placed on an NHL roster, or returned to his major junior team.

Adding to the myth is the age of college kids drafted by NHL teams who leave their schools early. They're over 18 to start, and an extra year or two at school before they leave and they're the same age as the CHL kids who are eligible to now play in the AHL.

Very few USHL/NAHL, Euro, Russian kids can make the jump to the AHL, but it is possible and it does happen.

*edit* Here is a very thorough explanation of who can go where at what age: http://www.stanleycupofchowder.com/2012/8/1/3213217/bruins-nhl-chl-ahl-agreement-CBA-talks-2012

Frankly, and keeping in mind that these preseason rankings are always a crapshoot, I put a bit more stock in a coaches' poll than a media poll. Sounds like there were 22 "media" voters, which to me says there may have been some bloggers and/or student rags in there, which always have more bias towards their school and the teams they're most familiar with. Personally, I would've limited voting to the primary beat writer for each local professional newspaper, though I realize that can be difficult.

At any rate, this will all be irrelevant once they start playing games.

that still doesn't really explain Jujhar's situation...he's a special case having been drafted in CHL but choosing college.

I had Tech at #2. Would y'all like the media poll to continue? There's currently no plan for it going forward, but I'm happy to pick up the baton from the Bemidji Pioneer.

I was there, collecting resumes and interviewing people. It was a ****ing zoo. We took over 300 resumes and still had people in our line after all of the other companies had packed up for the day.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

It has been a long time since I have seen that many companies attend. Too bad more companies don't bring products and park them outside. There were a few that did this year (GM, Mercury, etc), but nothing like it used to be years ago when it seemed like every Fortune 500 that built something physical brought a truck load or more of it.

Tech had the video board running ads full time both days. I'm guessing that was on purpose as they also put a flyer on every company's table about sponsoring the sports teams.

Tickets are on sale for the Yost series.
Let us get as many Tech fans in there as possible.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Finally found a video of the most recent John Scott "event" vs Toronto... I either lost a lot of respect for Phil Kessel or I over estimated how smart of a guy he was. Should Scott be taking on Kessel? No. Should Kessel be anywhere near Scott when he is looking for a dance partner? No. The stick swinging was just stupid beyond belief...
