Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

I agree, Coghlin is a guy that has to be considered seriously. Now, before you jump all over the "rookie" let me say that I have been on this site since it first started and have simply been a "browser" and have not actively posted. Tech is at a serious crossroads and IMO this a make or break decision for this program. With that here is my argument for Coghlin:

1) Second all-time winningest HEAD COACH in the NCAA, all divisions, at 0.757 as of last year
2) Overall record of 390-108-40 in 18 seasons
3) Was captain of the DIII champion UWSP team in 1989
4) Two-time all-American defensemen
5) Signed by the Vancouver Canucks
6) Played for the Milwaukee Admirals and Fife Flyers
7) Assistant coach for UWSP in '92 (DIII runner up) and '93 (DIII champions)
8) Took over at SNC in '94, HERE ARE THE STATS:

2010-11: 25-4-1 (national champions)
2009-10: 24-4-3 (finished 2nd in the Frozen Four)
2008-09: 19-8-1
2007-08: 27-1-4 (national championship)
2006-07: 25-4-2 (finished 3rd in the Frozen Four)
2005-06: 25-5-2 (finished 2nd in the Frozen Four)
2004-05: 24-3-3
2003-04: 27-3-2 (finished 2nd in the Frozen Four)
2002-03: 27-2-2 (finished 3rd in the Frozen Four)
2001-02: 23-5-3
2000-01: 18-8-3
1999-00: 22-5-2
1998-99: 25-5-3
1997-98: 27-6-0
1996-97: 21-9-1
1995-96: 12-13-3
1994-95: 9-14-4
1993-94: 10-9-1

His resume speaks for itself. Now, don't bring up the BS that DIII talent is different than DI, because that is what it is, BS. Yes, each league will have its' "level" of talent. Nonetheless, you still need to compete at your level, period. There are 77 teams in DIII and SNC has been at the top for a decade and that says something. This all comes down to winning and knowing how to win and motivate your players. Coghlin flat out knows how to do this.

p.s., for those that still want a Tech connection, check out who his assistant is...

BTW, to all the hard core Tech posters on this site, you guys have been awesome!! Fans like you guys are what makes Tech unique. Through good and bad, best **** fans in all the NCAA!!

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

best first post ever. stick around for the fun. :)

The assistant is AJ Aitken. His 3rd leading scorer was Seth Soley (if he can coach this kid to being a top-3 forward, you might be on to something.)

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

We ARE good looking, at least I am! ;)

Now the real question, is he going to buy a new scoreboard?

I do agree that MOST of the fans are great fans.

long time lurkers are we? Sounds a lot like mitch.

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

I just randomly popped into this thread to see what names you guys were talking about, interesting to see Coghlin discussed. I was just talking to somebody pretty close to the St. Norbert program at the GB regional Sunday, and he said he doesn't think Coghlin will ever leave. But I don't think he actually knows the guy well, so he's basically just talking out of his ***.

And without searching this thread to see if his name was brought up, where's Chris Tok at now? He an option? Or are you guys trying to bring in completely new blood?

At this point, hopefully new blood.

Chris Tok is the head coach of the new NAHL team in Austin, MN...having a below .500 season. Not surprising in the teams first yet...I don't think he will be considered, I don't really think he enjoyed his time in Houghton.

So he told you this? You talked to him and that was the impression that you got from the conversation???

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

What about the coach from the team that St. Norbert beat in the final game - Fogarty

1) All time winningest NCAA Coach in just his 4th season .888
2) Overall record of 102-12-2 in 4 seasons
3) Started a program from scratch 4 years ago
4) Played at Colgate University
5) Assistant Coach for Colgate, Clarkson and BGSU
6) Asst. Coached at D-1 level for over 10 years
7) Head Coach of the new Adrian program for 4 years - won league and playoff championships every year
8) HERE ARE THE STATS:

2010-11: 25-4-1 (finished 2nd in the Frozen Four)
2009-10: 24-4 (lost in 1st round of NCAA's)
2008-09: 27-1-1 (league did not have A.Q.)
2007-08: 26-3 (best record for start up program - no league A.Q.)
2002-06: Asst. Coach at BGSU
1999-01: Asst. Coach at Clarkson
1996-99: Asst. Coach at Colgate

Just a thought....

Re: Michigan Tech needs a new coach, what do you say Cary Eades?

None of these guys are named Cary Eades, so that is a very significant strike against them.

1. Cary Eades
.

.
2-123. Everyone else.

He spent every offseason at Tech applying for other jobs...I know thats kind of to be expected for an assistant coach but sure gives me the impression that after he got there, he wanted to get out. Why are you all defensive about my impression of Chris Tok? I thought he was a great hire at the time but from all of my interactions with him, he didn't seem all that invested in MTU. It just seemed like something on the resume to get him the assistant job at UMD or a head coaching job in Junior Hockey.

Coghlin would never consider the Mich Tech job, he would be going from 25 schollies to 18. Not greener on the other side in this case.

Ummmm....there are NO hockey scholarships at St. Norbert. It's D-III.

I'm not defensive. You make a post that he didn't enjoy his time in Houghton. Of course he may have been searching for a step up. That is the nature of the business. He spent three years at Tech. He then took an opportunity to advance his career. He looked for a way to move up and move on, but that hardly means that he didn't "enjoy" his time in the Copper Country.
