Michigan Tech Huskies at St. Cloud State Huskies: Eyeing the Finish Line

Re: Michigan Tech Huskies at St. Cloud State Huskies: Eyeing the Finish Line

I'm actually curious to know what happened to the Drew LeBlanc #19 captain jersey. Former SCSU Husky Mark Parrish won the jersey and I never saw the player hand over the jersey. I saw Mark down in the lockerroom about 45 minutes later and he wasn't carrying the jersey around either. I wonder if he said Drew could keep it? I know Mark paid well over $1000 for it. The last bid I saw was $1400, but someone said it ultimately went for more. I didn't get to see the sheet in the last 5 minutes as I was watching a couple others. Very generous by Mark either way.

It went for $1,700

And speaking of Parrish. He's the color guy right? Him and Jim Rich are fantastic to listen to. Really enjoyed them as an away fan watching the home feed. Can't say that every week.

I hope you aren't talking about us? I have no problem with SCSU winning the cup. I just didnt want to see the cup raised again after a Tech loss...seen it too many times.

 The cup was still sitting in a display case in Mariucci last night. No way it could have been raised while Tech was in town.

Re: Michigan Tech Huskies at St. Cloud State Huskies: Eyeing the Finish Line

Holy Toledo, that was one game I wish wasn't on TV in the cities. Tech took it to us. Good for them. I don't think the game last night was as close for the first two periods as some of the MTU fans thought it was, but the original Huskies sure come out in the third and made it a game.

Tonight, I was not watching by my usual method which is the online feed. My brother wanted to watch the Gophers and by the time I beat him into submission and got him to turn on the SCSU/MTU game it was 3-0. I was flabbergasted to say the least. I wasn't surprised we were losing after the flow of last night's game, but on Senior Night that is a pathetic showing to let in three goals in the first period with a trophy on the line. I think we have the best defense in the WCHA and to let that happen is pretty embarassing. Didn't see the goals, but Tech continued their tough play after that. We also had the number one scoring team in the league, and not only did we not get a goal to make it a game, we continued getting our *** handed to us and couldn't get any quality opportunities. I didn't expect Tech to roll over, but apparently the home team did. As we got further along into the game, we somehow got lazier and took bad penalties in an effort to slow down a team we really shouldn't have had problems scoring once against to keep it close. In the 2nd intermission of Friday night's game I was wondering if Mel made any difference at all for Tech. But after the thrashing SCSU suffered last night, I forsee good things for MTU in the remodeled WCHA. I will root for the BSU and MSU-M first, but I still like the way Tech plays and will be rooting for them to turn their program around.

I ducked into the MTU web chat a couple of times Friday night, and I think it is weak that one of their fans was trying to rip our school for using the jersey fundraiser for the locker room. They said something along the lines of 'if we had a jersey fundraiser I am sure we would donate it to charity'. So I would like to ask the guy with the THG handle why he has a problem with our school using the funds of the hockey fans to build our locker room, rather than pushing it off onto the students.

It really comes across as a last ditch fundraising effort, as in they've missed their targets in more traditional efforts. If students have to shoulder the cost without their approval, maybe it isn't the time to upgrade.

Jeez...we should donate the cash to charity, but two pages ago you've got Hopalong Techie making fun of our team for growing out their hair for Locks of Love. Gotta love that!

No, that is the point. The students don't have to shoulder the costs. That is what the fundraiser is for. The rich fans of the program pay $300-$1700 for the jerseys and that is money that doesn't come out of the student's pockets. And if you Piano Dogs want to slag our team and talk about what you would do with your hypothetical funds, feel free to sell your jerseys and take the moral high ground when you donate it to the Ronald McDonald House or another more worthwhile cause.

Re: Michigan Tech Huskies at St. Cloud State Huskies: Eyeing the Finish Line

I am not much of an expert when it comes to charity fundraising, however having purchased more than a few jerseys directly from teams (including MTU and SCSU) I didn't have a problem with the SCSU auction. I would not have had a problem with it, even if I hadn't survived the madhouse that was the last 30 seconds of bidding. From everything I saw it was very well run, and I only saw one small debate afterwards about a person "blocking" a bid sheet so that someone couldn't put the bid in at the last second. I got my jersey by taking about 10 seconds to write my bid starting at 11 seconds to go, but if you wait until the last second there are risks too. SCSU had more than a dozen people there at the end and counted the the last few seconds down out loud and when time was up a staff member put a hand on every single bid sheet blocking any further bids. So two thumbs up for their handling of the event -very clear what was happening and very fair IMO.

As for as where the money goes, when I buy jerseys from a team I do so knowing full well that the money is going directly back into the team's bank account, not a charity. Honestly in most cases, what I pay for the jerseys doesn't even cover the team's cost to buy and letter/number them so all they are doing is cutting their losses. Now an event like the one last night is an exception. In my opinion 75% of the prices paid were way over what any collector would ever offer for one if they would be resold. Add the fact that most fans got them autographed and about 95% will never be resold to anyone other than an SCSU fan. No big deal to me as it just makes the few that squeak out more valuable. We were also told when we paid that any amount over $100 could be taken as a tax deduction. SCSU did make quite a bit of money at the auction and I don't think it is any different than MTU's "Grand Raffle" which all goes back to the athletic department. I would love to see MTU do a special jersey auction. I would be broke for months if they had one, but I don't think they would make anywhere near as much money as SCSU did last night. At MTU you're talking about fans who complain about parking going up $2 (to $5 per game) and having to spend $14 per game for a ticket. Last night's ticket was $25, but it did come with free parking. I could be very wrong, but I don't see Tech fans dropping $500 per jersey for ANY cause, help the team or charitable in nature.

Regardless of where the money goes, SCSU should be glad that they have fans with the deep pockets to step up and give for the designated cause regardless of what it is. Even so, you don't come close to the madness than is a North Dakota jersey auction. Those fans are either loaded to the gills with money or are just plain crazy. They almost always average $750 per jersey and I've seen some where they've averaged over $1000 per jersey! And that's why I only have one Whioux jersey in my collection, and no, I didn't buy it.

and that was just plain stupid of the WCHA. I was always under the impression that once it was possible for a team to clinch the cup would be there, it didnt work out but that was bush league.

That makes soooooooooooooooooo much more sense. Some of the guys have super trashy mains going on over there. I didn't know it was a lots for love thing, that's pretty cool, but still doesn't make them look less disturbing :D

Typical Minny in my opinion.

And it doesn't matter if some of them look trashy. It's for charity.

Back in my day, having nasty Jagr-locks or Eddie hair was cool.

i'm investing heavily in voodoo. The ghost of john macinnes arises tonight followed by the resurrected spirit of badger bob next week and nearly half the conference has a chance to join the party.

I'm tellin' ya'-- the rest of the way is all about zombies.

zombies!

It's like the knew the outcome and didn't waste the gas money. Besides the league needs to save money for the nWCHA.

Bwaahaahaahaa. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why they are known as Jan Brady State University! Marcia, Marcia, Marcia! :D

Like Minnesota had anything to do with the league decision regarding the cup. You think they had armed guards keeping the league rep from picking it up, if they wanted to?

Re: Michigan Tech Huskies at St. Cloud State Huskies: Eyeing the Finish Line

I wondered about this after seeing it too. But there is also a Hobey Baker trophy in another display case fifty feet away from the one holding the cup. Is there any possibility that MN/The WCHA has a replica cup? Pretty sure the Hobey Baker trophy in the display case is not the one they presented to Jack Connolly last April. If the one at Mariucci last night was the real cup it was a mistake as I believe St. Cloud could have clinched it outright with a win and some help last night.

The WCHA tried to get the cup out of Mariucci but the BIG had black helicopters circling to make sure it didn't leave the premises.
