Michigan Tech Huskies 2024-25 - OK MacNaughton, Stop Ducking Us

I have heard that Michigan Tech has opted in to the house settlement, which per my understanding means they can make direct payments to athletes from revenue sharing, but they then must cap their roster at 26 for hockey. By my count with returning players, announced transfers and incoming freshmen, the team would be at around 34 to 36 players. Does that mean the staff must cut 8-10 players for this year? Could some of those players still practice with the team as redshirts? Or am I missing something? Anyone "in the know", please advise. Thanks.

not in the know specifically about this program, but the settlement does not require immediate roster capping. you can go over the roster limit by declaring players a "Designated Student Athlete" if they were a pre-existing roster player or recruited for this season before a certain date. FAQ here discusses it in depth in Section C. NCAA hockey actually opened up a new portal window recently for any of these types of players, so it seems some of the players already know if they were given this designation.

how it specifically materializes for any given team is largely tbd. some schools have already pushed prior commits' enrollment back so they get another year in juniors (sometimes even a year at the major junior level).

Terrible to do the 26 man roster this late in the season, hence why I am complaining about the CHL invasion and will take roster spots of current players. Mark my word the CHL stats are inflated as they played against mostly 16-17 year old's. Players let go will be better in some areas and will be the casualty. Going into the portal at this time is totally unfair.

just for some perspective. in the 70- 71 NHL season, Bobby Orr, who was like 22 at the time, played in 78 games, he had 139 points and he was a plus 124 plus minus. So that's the bar to shoot for.

In 1970 maybe a player of that caliber might entertain playing for Tech, but not in the current environment. I think that their road to success will be tied to how hard they work every minute of every game, willingness to work for dirty goals in tight, staying out of the penalty box and getting points for all 4 lines. They open at Minnesota so the new coach will have to have everybody ready to go right from the start. A split on opening weekend would be huge. Is it curious that they haven't posted an official roster at this point?
