<> Michigan Tech Huskies 2023-24: Is the MacNaughton coming home? <>

Good riddance to FloHockey. Overpriced and substandard. Even if Midco just does an adequate job, that will be an improvement.

The deal includes provisions for pre-existing linear TV deals, so Tech-NMU games will continue to air on TV6 & FoxUP. The provision for each school to designate two "rights fee free" games also was included, so there could be some opportunities for further television coverage. Mankato's deal with KEYC also pre-dates the agreement cutoff so I would expect that they will be able to do local broadcasts of Minnesota State as well. Midco already did some games at Augustana, I'd expect that to continue also.

Spoke to a high ranking producer at Midco who says that they are not starting with plans to televise games on their linear network, but that capability exists so it's not out out the question. I would read that as the league might be pushing to have the playoff semifinals and championship game televised.

Say hello to Cade Neilson from Alaska-Fairbanks, who's coming to Tech from the portal with two years of eligibility. He's a native of Nottingham England, so the logical nickname would be "The Sheriff"...? Had an assist in each of the three games the Nanooks played against the Huskies last season.

I live out of state, and when the local UP channels covered the NMU/TECH games, I would get that streamed on FLO. Will that continue?

To put a button on the Swankler saga - he has transferred to D3 Chatham. Rumor is that he flunked out and ended up skipping town a week before the semester ended.

I know Joe talked about it on his last radio show, but hopefully he really takes this season as a lesson when it comes to vetting the character of potential transfers.

I listened to the last show but there was 30 seconds I missed and apparently that was when he talked about it. I'm going to assume he didn't really do much work because the staff as a whole makes great efforts to help players with academics. Otherwise agree. His presence didn't do anything for us or him.

Joe is fixated on bringing in players who in his eyes played at a bigger school or conference then hands them the keys. I still cannot believe the players that just left.

I noticed on the ccha website that it says Tech's colors are Black and Gold. I thought they were silver and gold . Am i just asleep or did the colors change?

Black and gold "athletic colors" vs silver and gold "school colors" is the difference. I always wished Tech did a silver/black alternate jersey.

Was it a surprise that Adam Pietila was recruited by Wisconsin over Tech? Seems like there has been a bit of a Pietila pipeline to Tech.

Yes and no. The college hockey recruiting landscape has changed a lot since the "Pietila pipeline" started 10 years ago, and when you combine that with the fact that some players just want to do their own thing, it makes sense that you aren't going to land every single one of them. There were other factors, too.

He landed at NMU first. I recall when it was announced there were a couple of opinions expressed that Adam should've been relatively easy to get, and that the staff had screwed up somehow. However at the time he was a 19 year-old playing in the NAHL, and Shawhan has basically stopped recruiting from that league because he feels the staff's time and budget is better spent on the BCHL/USHL/Europe. We also still had Chris Brooks as an AC leading recruiting, and COVID + family changed his priorities. When he left for Clarkson during the 2022 offseason, the rumor was that Shawhan had been unhappy with Brooks' performance on the recruiting trail and he wanted a young road warrior to replace him, ultimately hiring Jordy Murray. So there was some staff churn and strategy adjustment going on within the program at the time Adam committed, which likely contributed as well.

One more transfer added. Stiven Sardarian, a Russian forward who played at UNH for the last two seasons and was a 2021 3rd round NHL draft pick (BUF), will be moving to Houghton this fall per his Elite Prospects page. Had a 7-7-14 line in 32 games last year and also played in 29 games as a freshman there.

I'm sure the Misfits will procure a Russian flag, though it might be a bit awkward to fly it at the moment...

Seems like a nice pick up for this late. Looks like Blake is playing overseas. It will be interesting to see how the goaltending shakes out given that he basically played like 99% of the games the last couple of seasons.

Over the last two years i've thought Max V was just as good. apparently, joe didn't agree but I think Max will be very good and think Mulahy( sp) will be a good addition as well.
BTW I agree that our recruiting hurt us in years past and we have had to play catch up. We still have work to do but it's getting there.

THG's Nathan Cima has the story. UAF transfer Cade Neilson will not be coming to Houghton and instead will attempt to turn pro in his native Britain. He was likely to start the season as our 2C, so this leaves a hole to fill. Sardarian used to play some center in juniors, so they may try to convert him back to that role.

Well, I participated in walk-on tryouts a short time ago and might give it another go then. I don't think coach Nahrgang gave me a fair shot.
