Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I looked back 2 years to see how the 14/15 yo recruits panned out...list includes Jack Eichel (BU), Ryan Fitzgerald (BC), Dylan Larkin (Mich), JT Compher (Mich), Nick Schmaltz (UND), Vince Hinostroza (ND), Morgan Zulinick (UW)...and then there is Levi Erkkila (NMU)...what happen to him?

Medical issues ended his career.

Levi's issue wasn't skill or development related....he had some personal problems and had to return home from Junior A. When he played for Calumet, he was amazing, despite his stature. I think he was a safe bet from a talent perspective.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

the wink is nice, but literally that kid's career just ended...before he was even suppose to attend NMU...just wondering.

I honestly don't know the back story.

A quick search doesn't show him enrolled at NMU. Walt has been a man of his word to these kids who have committed to NMU and are unable to play because of injury.

Robert Skinner, recruited by NMU but suffered a career ending injury in the BCHL, still chose to attend NMU and was treated just like any other player. Except he couldn't play.

I hope the article is old enough where it won't get paywalled. It loaded for me.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I have to say I'm pretty happy!. No check that, I'm REAL happy. I expected us to be competitive after Coach Pearson was hired, but we are much more than that, and it appears we will be better for a long time to come.

This. We can complain about some of the missed opportunities against UW or NMU, but overall we can't forget where we came from. Or the fact that we haven't had home ice in the playoffs forever. This is so much more fun.

One of the perks of Season Ticket Holder Appreciate night Friday is a free ticket to the 3/6 game against NMU. Obviously they have a ticket, so the theory is they'll give it to a friend? I just realized spring break starts that weekend, I'd hope it's not super hard to fill up for NMU, but I guess it's a unique idea to get more people in the seats.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

bump.

and. Dirk's Dad is one of the better known coaches in the Copper Country. I remember when Dirk started out, Dad would wear headphones, watching and listening to the game. a couple years in he dropped the headphones. Dirk is one of the best in my opinion, in college sports. I haven't listened to the Eastern schools, but everywhere we go out west he is better, hands down. and I love the mix of Dirk, the color guy and the crowd noise and the rink noise. it really makes you feel like you are there.

and hey, its Thursday, we can talk hockey! who on the injury list is ready to go?

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I'm afraid Dirk has spoiled us. He gets in way more words per minute in the play by play that any other college hockey announcers and he does so intelligently and with unmistakable enthusiasm. It shows that he understands the game and knows what's important to call. He chooses to tell high value backstory about players, always gets the names right for the other team and never fails to credit solid play by the other team. I think he just has much higher hockey knowledge and insight than the competition. I particularly like when he's on with Brent Peterson. Unfortunately, I now find most other WCHA broadcasts almost unlistenable and annoying.....and it's Dirk's fault. Outside if Dirk, I think Dave Danis did a nice job for NMU.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Here's an article with some info on Williamson's visit and what he liked. He has a foot injury, thus why he could visit during the hockey season.

hehe. the land cows can't get any credit....

"Michigan Tech has won three NCAA national championships and is second in the WCHA Conference, at 13-4-1, just back of the Minnesota Gophers."

Good to hear! It's been too long. :(

And yes, I'll be donning the Tech jersey. When in Rome....or something.

Even the ex, at her first real sporting game ever, was overcome with enthusiasm and hostility towards the other team. She was baffled. Direct quote: "My God, they [Gophers] are playing like sh*! Why am I so pi**ed off?! I'm not a sports person!!!!!!"

And you also know why, given our history, Gopher fans are so darn arrogant. :D

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I'm nervous about this series. Huntsville had the lead at Omaha until the final minute of play in the second game and only lost because of a lost face-off. We have to be good or it won't end well.
