Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I have to say I'm pretty happy!. No check that, I'm REAL happy. Overall though, I like our team;)
Good thing you were not on the THG chat this past weekend. Tech got down two goals and fans were saying the season was over... and the sky was falling. I'm sure the Fire Mel chants could not have been far behind. Amazing how a win calms everyone down.

This is the first season since the late 1990s that I've been able to watch pretty much ever game (via crappy WCHA low-def feed). I think earlier in the season, Tech was playing lesser opponents and their upperclassmen were more ready to go out of the gate than younger teams we faced. However as the season has gone on, it is clear that Tech is playing tough teams now and the plays don't come as easily. During the Russell era, every D-zone clear was bank it up high off the glass and out to center ice. That play has its place but not as your first choice. Early in the season, Tech made a lot of D to D passes and was moving out of the zone with puck control. More recently I'm seeing more dump it off the glass and then the other team just reloads and comes right back into the zone.

Again some of this is the tougher teams across the rink, but ultimately in March and April, Tech will need to find that confidence they had early in the season when they moved the puck AND controlled it for a greater portion of the game. I have seen some very pretty goals this season from Tech. They are plays made by guys who have an above average hockey IQ and have a good instinct for where to put the puck and when. It also helps when you have team mates that can match that talent level.

I hope that Tech gets some puck luck down the stretch. We're going to need to be a team that scores 4+ goals a game if we want to sustain a long win streak to close out the season and into post season play. Jamie has been good, but we've seen the last few weeks that he is mortal and you don't want to lose a key game 2-1 or 3-2 because of lack of offense. I have no problem with Tech giving up 3 goals per game, but we need to be on a scoring pace closer to that of Mankato. Otherwise you risk one bad play losing a game for you. If you put up 4+ you can have those 1 or 2 mental errors in a game that are bound to happen and still come out winners.

Tech as four more home games that they should win and then it will be a tough grind to the end. Going to AK, regardless of the team, is never easy... Mankato on the road... Northern home and home to close it out. If the rest of the league can find a way to beat BGSU at least 1 or 2 more times, Tech is still in the driver's seat to win the league. The games against Mankato will pretty much decide that - anything less than a sweep in Mankato and it is very unlikely that Tech won't finish on top.

It's going to be an exciting February for the first time in a long time!

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

food for thought to you guys in the THG chat, I really enjoyed it while listening to the game on the radio back when the conversation had more observations on the ice hockey contest itself and less um, griping about pixels, buffering, camera work, streaming delays, etc. Just my opinion, but it's gone downhill quite a bit this year when I have been there (not often lately though, maybe it's better now?)

as for the video quality, I think some of you guys need to try different ways of watching, I've tried doing ipad to apple tv and it looks awful, while watching straight on my ipad looks fine and watching hdmi out of my laptop also looks good.

I just save my money and listen to Dirk's call. The game as he describes it is much more exciting than the real thing. Highlights are free the next morning.

Not a bad idea, especially for road games.

My apologies I haven't had much time to be around this year. Hopefully, our moderators will try to spur some conversations.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Dirk is as good as they come, and better than a lot of NHL announcers.

I don't know about that, he sounds like a teeny booper girl every time the puck gets near the crease...

Just for comparison, Joel L'Esperance committed when he was 16. We also have 4 other recruits that committed when they were 16 or younger
Tristan Rostagno (15)
Travis Brown (16)
Jake Kauppila (16)
Jake Gingell (16)

you are correct, sorry.

What's the normal age for commitments, I am not too up to speed on how it works.

Gotta have some drama ;)

I know, but the quality of the feed really has been that bad this year, I have watched NMU, UAH and a few others and their feed are all quite a bit better than ours. I don't think ours needs to be 1080P HD quality but with paying as much as we did I do expect it to be as good as the rest of the school's feeds are.

I have used my Nexus 9, laptop and desktop out via HDMI to my TV, they all look equally as bad to me. It's poor compression and bit rate, not the device it's on.

Every announcer I've ever heard get's excited when the puck get's near the goal, Dirk is hardly unique in this aspect.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I just think that Dirk's about to have a heart attack every time it's in/near the crease. And I think he pooped himself when the game winner was scored in OT this last weekend. HN seemed to agree with me. Then, for his reward, I forced him to watch the Gophers games. :)

I will agree, he did get REALLY excited on that goal, but I like his enthusiasm ;)

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Dirk is the best in the business, I love him. Remember how Bruce Martyn's voice would shift about 3 octaves whenever the Wings scored? Same kind of excitement.

I didn't mean "you guys" that are running the site, we all appreciate the effort to keep it going. It just gets a little old when the platform is used by others to complain about technology rather than the refs, the coaching, the fans, the effort, etc. on the ice. ;)

I thought he was squeezing out a #2 right there in the booth on Blake's OT winner Friday. One of these days he's going to stroke out mid-call..... ;)

At least he's entertaining and puts emotion into it at the right times. Tells it like it is.

My "reward" seemed to be more or less punishment for the wife. Not sure how that works.

Apparently I need to be in there more often.
Other than bose's Boosh Factor being at 1.000001 and Yager's moderating being non-existent at times, it's generally been ok. Then again, I tend to comment on the game.
