Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

As for the LSSU talk earlier, I look at it as the same that MN is doing, playing all the MN schools/PWR be dammed. Support the state schools/old conferences/etc.

That is not the same thing...playing a conference opponent in non-con.

Also not the same thing because Tech is not a B1G school supporting the little fish. I would not expect a Gopher fan to account for that though. :p

Hey, you guys are the premiere school this year (and probably looking forward). THERE is the parallel. ;)

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I think you guys are missing the point.

WE ARE MOST LIKELY GOING TO BE PLAYING IN THE NCAAs!

woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohoooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

This . . .

Seriously this; if we make it, I don't care who we play. As long as we play well, we've got as good a shot as anyone else at advancing.

. . . and this.

2007 Michigan State finishes 4th in the CCHA and 3-4-1 in their final eight games of the season. They get clobbered by UM in the CCHA semis, and eek out a victory in OT over LSSU in the consolation game to back into the NCAAs. Then they beat BU 5-1, Notre Dame 2-1, Maine 4-2, and BC 3-1.

Anything can happen in one and done . . . let's just get there.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I had looked at rebuilding as a process. first we would get home ice. then we would go to the tournament. then win the tournament. then start looking forward to making the NCAAs.
I'm just thrilled we are moving along so quickly!

Me too, my goal for this season was home ice, so every additional game is gravy.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Agreed. I was in the same boat. But once you compete for the McNaughton, you are also in the mix for the NCAA. There is just so much parity.

I'm learning what the phrase, " I like this team" means as well.

Do you think Mel is surprised at this year rs team performance?

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I know it's game day, but who are the expected departures and arrivals next year? Kero, Johnstone, Sweeney, Pietila, Hietala, and Davis are seniors. I don't see next year's senior class as being quite as influential at forward as this one (Gould, Eick, Vallis, Petan) but with Boeing, Jackson and others coming in we'll be OK in the long run. I'm thinking a step back next season, still with a good chance of home ice (any early departures could damage that plan), and another tourney run possible the following year.

Well, we gain Dane Birks, plus Evan Anderson and Mason Blacklock if they continue to be redshirted.

As for incoming freshmen that aren't in Houghton yet...I have Demico Hannoun, Jake Jackson, Brett Boeing, Trevor Cope and potentially Jake Lucchini at Forwards.
I also have Mitch Reinke, Cooper Watson on defense and possibly Angus Redmond but thats probably only if Phillips does what Copley did.

All I can say is that our defense is going to keep getting better if we don't have any early departures.

Yes, the defense is really a bright spot going forward. Also we've seen huge improvements from L'Esperance and Heinonen, and excellent play from Baltus and Steman early. If these guys have a good offseason maybe I should be looking for regular top 10 status.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

From yesterday's Anchorage Daily News preview article for the UAA series: http://www.adn.com/article/20150212/time-getting-short-uaas-postseason-hockey-ambitions

"UAA has not scored an even-strength goal in 125 minutes, 8 seconds. That dates back to Scott Allen’s game-tying, extra-attacker goal with 19 seconds left in regulation in a 3-2 overtime loss at Northern Michigan."

I don't consider an extra attacker goal to be even strength.

The real answer for how long it's been since UAA scored an even strength goal is 201 minutes, 50 seconds. That goes back to the 3rd period of the Friday night loss at NMU.

Let's hope the Huskies can extend that to 321 minutes, 50 seconds.

Just tried to buy playoff game tix online and the website broke. I'll have to stop by the ticket office.

They haven't had to sell playoff tickets for 21 years, I'll give them a pass this one time.

Any guesses on the extra Forward? Last weekend it was Johnstone/Hietila - Vallis/Anderson on Friday and Saturday I think.

I'd guess Vallis is the extra, assuming Johnstone and Hietila are there.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I'm guessing the system was not designed with a "buy playoff tickets" function for hockey. There is likely some mad programming going on presently to add that feature.
I was able to get a flight up to Anchorage yesterday so I get to see a couple more games in person before the big games start in a couple weeks.

I bought my tickets at lunchtime, but checking the site now, it's fixed. Come one, come all for playoff hockey in Houghton.
