Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Based on who I predicted will win, and no conference tournament upsets (unlikely), they're in. They have a pretty easy schedule left compared to other eastern teams, with games against UCONN, Maine and UNH left. Their toughest test is a series against Vermont.

There goes the Merrimack theory. Obviously when I ran my simulation I didn't expect a loss to UCONN. :p

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Sounds like we will play LSSU four times a year going forward, regardless of whether it aligns as conference play or we burn an NC series on it. For me, this is a mixed bag. It feels good to play the other UP schools and maybe put the Cappo Cup up for grabs amongst all three teams annually, but playing a member school out of conference doesn't aid the WCHA's postseason chances as a whole. Plus, with opportunities to schedule non-con games sometimes limited to just six games per year (depending on whether or not we visit one or both Alaska teams), four of which MTU will now burn on the GLI and (2 years out of 4) LSSU, it is not as good for our PWR either.

Yes, but it really helps on the cost and travel end of things. LSSU should be better going forward as well.

I ran the simulation like BB did, except with us splitting with NMU and Mankato, and I got us at 9. So those NMU games a the end are very important. I had Denver going by us, and minnesota in at 15. If we split at uaa then it will be pretty tough. It's still a crap shoot of course.

I just don't like it. That basically means half of our NC schedule will be against teams in Michigan/WCHA because of the way they have scheduled the GLI. This reshuffling feels like scheduling has actually gotten more insular instead of less. There are so few games between the East and West now because the west has so many more choices near by for non-conference games now...

If you're looking for a PWR boost, I'd like to see more of Duluth. St. Cloud is another good option. But probably the one being overlooked is Western Michigan. The Broncos have gone completely opposite of the Huskies - WMU will not play a single game against a team from the state of Michigan this season. Despite their placement in the NaCHo standings, they have a very high PWR and they're in an accessible travel radius.

There are enough long trips to deal with in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Huntsville. I think adding one in going out east is taking on a bit much in the travel department.

The schedule feels like it is going to get very stale without eastern teams in the GLI and playing LSSU in NC. I thought this team was doing well financially? I mean attendance is up, UAA, UA_ and UAH subsidize travel to some extent, how exactly does it hurt to play a NC series with an eastern team? This reshuffling has basically made it way to easy for the western teams to stay west and that isn't good for college hockey as a whole. I mean seriously, WCHA NC play is over and MTU has ZERO common opponents with Providence, Harvard, Yale, Vermont, Colgate, Merrimack, Northeastern, Dartmouth, Union, Connecticut, Bentley, Mercyhurst, Canisius, Massachusetts, RIT, Holy Cross, Sacred Heart, Brown, Princeton, Army, and Niagara. That's over a third of college hockey...

In other news, what happen to playing the toughest teams we can schedule to help the team grow and challenge them so they are ready? Giving up on that already? I'm sorry but I don't see MTU ever getting a QWB for beating LSSU and as you can see in the PWR that is huge.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Nothing against LSSU but I think NC games should really be NC games.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

4 games against LSSU every year? Yuck. Complete step in the wrong direction. Very disappointing to say the least.

I understand the thought process but its just a bad idea to me to give up a NC series with a non-WCHA team.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Here is what I have for NC going forward

2015-16 (8): GLI, @MSU, @Mich, vs UW*
2016-17 (10): GLI, @MSU, @LSSU, 4 left
2017-18 (10): GLI, 8 left
2018-19 (8): GLI, vs LSSU, 4 left

I guess it isn't horrible in the 10 NC game years but in 2018-19 that really sucks.

* Maybe 2016-17

I'm enough against the idea that I think the WCHA should limit conference members from scheduling conference opponents for non-conference games, for the good of the conference.

who knows what will happen if there's another shakeup. The WCHA commish said at the Blue Line Luncheon Friday that he'd like to get to 14 teams with an East and West division. Also a possibility of trading Bemidji and Mankato for Western and Miami.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

The LSSU thing could just be a favor to Damon as a thank-you for his efforts at Tech. If that is the case, I am ok with it. Nothing wrong with showing a little loyalty and helping those who have helped you in the past. If Tech remains a top team, beating anyone isn't going to be a quality win bonus. Tough to be a quality win when nearly everyone is ranked below you...

As far as the limit of NC games goes, hopefully we'll get allowed two additional home games when we start making the trek down to distant outcast ASU to work on our winter tans.

You get a QWB for beating/tying anyone in the top 20 of RPI.

was the bold part actually mentioned by the Commish? That sounds horrible for MTU, and for me...

he was responding to a question about it. he said he could see a scenario where it would make sense. I wouldn't have a problem with it, seeing as both Western and Miami are much closer to me than the Minnesota schools.

it probably would be good for you but I hate the idea of having my closest trips be to Houghton or a random no con. That shuffle would also make me hate the NCHC even more because it would end up being about getting rid of UAA and MTU. I'm sure it would be fine for their results and might open up the door for non-con with Bemidji and Mankato, but I don't know.
