Michigan Tech at UAA: Or, How I Learn To Stop Worrying And Love The Ponies

Re: Michigan Tech at UAA: Or, How I Learn To Stop Worrying And Love The Ponies

3-1 tech scored mid way through the 3rd. But UAA scored shortly after that.

Re: Michigan Tech at UAA: Or, How I Learn To Stop Worrying And Love The Ponies

So I don't think UAA played well last night, I don't know what others think. We only went 1 for 5 on the PP, got outshot, and Tech pretty well contained our top line. Thankfully we got scoring from elsewhere.

Re: Michigan Tech at UAA: Or, How I Learn To Stop Worrying And Love The Ponies

Roads from S. Anchorage to the Sullivan Arena weren't too bad tonight. No problems at all.

Now ya tell me! Ugh. We stayed home because everyone was telling us not to even try making it in from Palmer. Wishing we would have gone, but we'll be there tonight.

JJ - Sounds like Gundy played great. America One didn't have the video up, so we could only listen to Kurt. He's great, but it would have been nice to watch it along with hearing him call it. Oh well.

It was great that Hubbs got a goal, but that kneeing penalty he took could have been a 5, according to our radio guys. And Tuttle said it looked deliberate. They were expecting the refs to give him the gate. He's gotta rein it in!!

It looked like we were off by 1/2 a step most of the night. Tech held possession in our end several times for way too long. We couldn't get it out. If that happens tonight the result for us won't be good
I disagree with Tech coach on the 1st period. Tech carried the play and we were lucky to come out with the one goal lead.
I thought we got better as the game went on but we were never sharp last night.
Hoping tonight we bring our A game.
I know I'm bringing a broom.

Re: Michigan Tech at UAA: Or, How I Learn To Stop Worrying And Love The Ponies

1 for 5 is 20%, that's a respectable PP by most standards. You're not gonna be playing Huntsville every night.

"Carrying the play" doesn't necessarily mean a team played well, and Tech did not. They just did a better job of maintaining possession, but did not otherwise do what they needed to do.

Well let me say this: It didn't look good. We had few chances on the PP as Tech pressured it pretty well and kept in check. We have the #1 PP in the league at ~ 28% so we were below average.

I don't think this is right. Tech carried the play and had good possession and forced Gunderson to make some saves. Gundy was the difference last night in the game.

They definitely didn't play well last night.... We'll be sitting up higher so we can actually see. The glass isn't the best. Surprised at how empty and quiet it was last night.

Good to meet you guys in the beer room, we will Be back again tonight :)

Nice to see fans "road tripping".See you tonight in the Booster room, as the Seawolves turn it up a notch or three.

Yeah, but... yeah, but... yeah but... I only had to hop on the Seward Highway & turn off on O'Malley Road and wham, I was just about home. The weather report had a red banner alert indicating "Severe Winter Weather Advisory" (and it was specifically because of road conditions from your front door to the Sully parking lot Ms. Suze! :D

Even around Anchorage, the roads weren't great.. just a lot better than you were encountering out in the Valley. I'm glad you're making it in tonight though!

When we pulled into the Sully last night, the guy collecting parking $ said "with these crappy roads, we should actually be paying YOU guys for showing up!" :p

BTW~ The doofuses that maintain the Sully's outdoor area (SMG?) are either lazy or just didn't think anyone was going to show up last night.. The steps over by the exit that face the Boeke arena's front parking lot (what corner is that?) ..anyway, they plowed a little of the snow off the steps, but left a massive, sloppy berm in the middle.. no sand, no nuttin. Everyone was grabbing the rails trying to maneuver their way down the steps to avoid the piles of snow they left on the steps.

Ah, but why maintain the Sully when there are tennis courts to be built? The Alaska Club is actually closing down one of their largest tennis courts because it's losing money and they offered to sell or rent it to the current mayor/former tennis coach, but no deal.. He'd prefer his brand-spankin new $7+ million dollar courts. I read that someone stacked the assembly meeting last week with tennis nerds who showed up to speak about the need for tennis courts.. but no one showed up to talk about hockey facilities. Or at least that's what I read.. In addition to the hockey community, you'd think someone from the Alaska Club would show up to speak..

Re: Michigan Tech at UAA: Or, How I Learn To Stop Worrying And Love The Ponies

The roads and sidewalks were something special last night... 4 falls in our walk from the hotel to humpy's... That stuff was crazy.

Hey, c'mon.. you're supposed to be used to this stuff! Didn't you pack your Yak Trax? :p

Re: Michigan Tech at UAA: Or, How I Learn To Stop Worrying And Love The Ponies

Surprised at how empty and quiet it was last night.

Hey now. First of all... our weather was uniquely crappy last night with a warm air inversion causing freezing rain conditions throughout southcentral Alaska. With all the media and news alerts, it was amazing that 2,333 people still made their way over there.

And unless the WCHA is wrong, your box score from your last Friday night game (without I'm assuming a severe travel advisory) shows attendance at 2672. So with (presumably?) decent road conditions.. you guys only had 339 more people in attendance than on our night of ditch diving/freezing rain/ucky arse weather. :D

Plus.. if I'm not mistaken, you guys don't share your arena with another (highly popular, winning) hockey team, or do you? Last Saturday if you were at the Sully, there wasn't one of those butt ugly yellow, orange or red seats that were empty for the Alaska Aces. Standing room only. Look up at the banner wall while you're in there and you'll see why the Aces pack em in. :(

We'll eventually get back to the days when the Seawolves packed the place just like the Aces do! Maybe not when the roads are iced over due to a freak weather event.. but we WILL get there! :o

I watched the Assembly meeting, streaming live. The subject of the tennis courts was on the agenda, about half way through - but then the Assembly switched things up and decided to address it LAST. A bunch of tennis supporters sat there for SIX hours to testify. Boy were they miffed. And many of them were the same ones who spoke the week prior! Anyway, it isn't true that there were no hockey supporters there, I saw two - but about a dozen for tennis.

The thing about the Alaska Club is that it's been on the market for 3.75 million, but they want to sell it to the muni for 6.1 million. They would be willing to spend 625,000 in enhancements that would be included in the price.

Gray-Jackson and Mayor Sullivan got into a little tiff about how the money came to be available for a tennis facility.

Re: Michigan Tech at UAA: Or, How I Learn To Stop Worrying And Love The Ponies

Would like to point out that Gundy is ranked 16th in the nation with his GAA.

UAA has the 9th ranked Power Play.

While I applaud the boys for the pretty darn good play soo far, we'll see just how good our team is in the next four weekends: at Minnesota State, UA_ at home, Lake Superior State at home, (at BUCKY-why the eff did we schedule this???), and Minnesota State at home. That stretch ain't no cupcake like we've had since starting WCHA play (minus Bowling Green). Were plus .500 and playing solid, here's to us keeping that up.

Re: Michigan Tech at UAA: Or, How I Learn To Stop Worrying And Love The Ponies

Just some stat watching:

Jordan Kwas needs two more assists for a career total of 50: 21-48-69
Matt Bailey is three points behind him for team career total: 34-22-66

Wasn't meant to be insulting, just a comment on the arena itself. The Mac is certainly a smaller venue and the atmosphere is a bit different with the same numbers. Houghton and anchorage are bit different in size as well :)

I'm also quite impressed I'm posting this from Whittier tunnel waiting area...

Been a day of amazing views!

I agree that the UAA didn't look very good. This team has got to learn how to keep pressuring for a full 60 minutes of hockey. Gundy is the only reason they got away with it last night and that's not always going to work. I'm happy for the win but the outcome could have easily been different

You're supposed to fall down after Humpy's, not before.

Yesterday was a real peach, even by Anchorage's lofty standards of crappy weather.
