Michigan Tech at Alaska Anchorage: Happy Ponies vs Sad Ponies

Re: Michigan Tech at Alaska Anchorage: Happy Ponies vs Sad Ponies

UAA has (had) the money, it just went to your basketball program.

DII basketball does seem to be favored over hockey. It's all Hackett wants to talk about. Drives me crazy.

You know what's worse? Nobody that matters will do anything to change it.

No boosters have the balls or money to do anything. Sponsors don't care. Alumni don't have enough money. Too many people with too much complacency.

Believe me, I know. I had it out with McDiffet a month ago, and Hackett last night. I will say that the boosters do have the "balls" to do something, they put their foot down on the hiring of our new coach, remember?

If it's anything like UAF the donors and dollars are there, it's just that they don't donate to athletics.

You won't like hearing this, but right now it has to be. You can't pay for the upkeep on that shiny new arena bringing 500 people in for games. He has no choice but to market basketball to death.

Re: Michigan Tech at Alaska Anchorage: Happy Ponies vs Sad Ponies

So I'm finally recovered from the long trek up North. Everyone says the Alaska trips are hard on 20 somethings who wear hockey gear, but what about the 40 somethings who sit in the stands? Not an easy trip for us either as I started the day with a four-hour nap after the completely full redeye back from Anchorage.

Not to beat a dead Pony but here is my take on the Saturday game. I think Tech smells the blood in the water and realizes what is at stake in their season and what it can still be. They came out ready to play in the first period and jumped on UAA with a few quick goals again for the second night taking the crowd completely out of the game with the feeling of "here we go again...". However UAA clearly got a butt kicking after the first period and I felt they carried the play in the second period. Most of the 2nd was played in the Tech defensive zone. But in the third period UAA started a parade to the penalty box and Tech cashed in a few times with the man advantage and after the 7th or 8th goal the wheels just came off and the game started to get chippy.

I know the score board didn't show it, but I thought UAA played two really tough periods to end the game and they did play hard all the way to the end. There was still some very fast pace and hard hitting hockey being played by both teams in the 3rd period so I don't think UAA mailed it in and I don't think Tech took their foot off the gas either.

I would also like to thank the members of this board that took the time to talk with me in the UAA booster club room. As with any online message board, you can always take what is written two ways - the way the author intended it and the way you want to take it. I think any time you have to chance to meet people in person that you interact with online you should do so. If you are even a halfway reasonable person I doubt you will ever have cross words with them because you realize they're just passionate fans like yourself and we all just want to see our team do well.

It's a long trek up there for us from the lower 48, but it is a very visitor friendly trip and a great time. Hopefully next time Tech does the UAF / UAA double I'll be back up. As an added bonus, my jersey collection was also a +2 on the weekend and I got to see my first moose in the wild. It's all good.
