Re: Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

Always enjoyed your fans from interactions in Arizona a few years ago and Vegas this year, but visiting this weekend brings it to a new level. Easily one of the most hospitable areas I have traveled and a virtual winter wonderland. The UP has made an impact on me. Best of luck tonight and for the remainder of the season.

What say yee now Rev89.2 as the MTU fan base tears apart your team and coaches? I hope a few jack wagons didn't tarnish your image of God's Country! You and your Sun Devils are welcome back to our area any time as far as I'm concerned. Playing teams like yours build character, or expose it, you might say.

I have read the comments and understand fandom. But there are two sides to every story and there will be little each side will agree on and nothing I would say would change the mind of anyone. But you all have passion because you care. With that said, it was a great trip. Met some great folks. Chatted with Andre who helps run the rink and Gary up in suites. Did you know Gary's story? If not, you need to go meet the guy. Cool history of playing hockey, including his time at BG. Awesome stories and both awesome folks. Also ran into your men's hoops coach during a shoot around the day before the Lake game and he couldn't have been more friendly. Two tough losses last week, but I will now be following and cheering them on. Enjoyed the trip and the pasty was delicious. Would love to come back someday. Good luck against NMU and the playoffs.

Anyone have a suggestion on the best bar in Houghton to watch the game on Friday against Northern. Where do you feel the best atmosphere would be?

KRUZER!!! Did he show you his ring?

No! But I would have loved to have seen it. That guy had a ton of energy and some of the best stories. And he said he previously worked here in AZ for the Coyotes. Small world.

http://www.mininggazette.com/sports/local-sports/2018/02/tech-asu-players-and-coaches-get-after-it-following-techs-5-3-win/

Here's an excerpt from today's DMG: "When Tech and ASU made their way to the handshake line, the previous fight turned into a brawl, and everyone got involved. Things escalated even more when ASU assistant coach Alex Hicks grabbed Tech Coach Joe Shawhan in a headlock. Head coach Greg Powers grabbed him from the other side, and moments later officials were pulling Powers and Shawhan apart as the two held on to each other’s collars, locked in a screaming match. "

Who needs to shake hands when you can just throw a headlock in there. Joe Shawhan, please stop being bush league and DO start putting opposing coaches in headlocks. We need to class it up here.

Re: Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

I'm sure any mature MTU alum and supporter is pretty embarrassed.
Not me. This team has been flat all year and needs a spark. My only suggestion is that he take a stick out with him next time.:D Or do like college football and have two state troopers escort him at the end of games.

Coach Joe needs to recruit another Gord Salt or John Scott enforcer...

I could see the DT (Downtowner) being the rowdiest, or maybe the Dog (Douglass House).

Revs89: As a Gopher fan, a group of us went up every time MN played Tech. Now that that is sadly gone, we still go up every summer to Da UP for a long weekend. Enough people go to the point where we have the entire 12-room Eagle River Inn booked, every year, period, for the same weekend. :D

Edit: each room has 2 beds. Lots of doubling up.

I'd say the B&B, they seem to embrace showing the hockey games. When I was up a few weeks ago, they were showing a game @Ferris, and there were a decent amount of people there watching.

Re: Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

Even though I don't support Coach Shawhan's involvement in the coaches confrontations on Saturday night I am leaning more towards his take on things (what limited info he has provided) based on his comments from the JSH yesterday. He thanked Bill Robertson and the WCHA office, on ice officials and the university for their investigation and handling of the incident.

If there was indeed an investigation and no disciplinary action has been taken by the league I am leaning toward the notion that the ASU coaches may have been the aggressors. I am sure the on ice officials were interviewed by the league as they were closely involved with the coaches confrontations. With Coach Shawhan's public bashing of WCHA officials, the officials had a golden opportunity to throw Coach Shawhan under the bus and it appears they have not.

I have been unable to find anything online from the ASU perspective except the comments Coach Powers made to Eden Laase of the Daily Mining Gazette published on Sunday February 18, 2018.

“Their coach took the liberty of coming onto the ice and going after one of our players,” Powers said. “That is unacceptable. It is unacceptable on every level. It’s the oldest rule in the book; you don’t go at a player on the opposing team, you don’t talk to a player on the opposing team. He not only did it, he got on the ice and came after him. It is absolutely bush league, and doesn’t surprise me with that guy,”

“That guy” was Shawhan, who didn’t understand the outrage, saying things got blown way out of proportion. From his perspective, it was more of a misunderstanding than anything else.

Maybe the story isn't over yet?

While there, have a few pickled eggs for me.

Well, I for one can't be the only fan tired of some opposing teams getting away with thug behavior against our players. Particularly this season, it feels like some officials have just let a lot of stuff go uncalled, or under-called.

Flying into MQT/SAW Friday, hope the weather is good enough for a landing. The plane is packed - only 2 seats left as of yesterday.

Re: Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

I don't understand why some of this fan base constantly whines about getting beat up on by other teams. If MTU was doing the beating up you probably wouldn't have any problem with it.

Coach Shawhan envies these teams and wants the MTU team to play more like them.

I predict that within 2 to 3 recruiting cycles, if not sooner, this team will have the same thug reputation that so many of you hate.

It's just hockey, lift your skirt up and get after it!

I disagree. If you listened to his show on Monday, he stated that what happened won't happen again. I think words were said during the game by both sides and it festered at the end of the game and both sides let off some steam. Neither team wanted to back down.

It seems a little funny to me in all the home games I have attended it has never escalated to this.....maybe back in the 70's, if at all. Every team seems to have an instigator that likes to get under the other team's skin.

A video on YouTube just went up from the reverse angle. Very interesting how Powers has the stones to call out Shawhan after watching this a few times. The guy is a punk plain and simple. No surprise the league and officials aren't recommending punishment.

Make up your mind. Should we be embarrassed or should we beg for more?

Re: Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

Why does Shawhan have a death grip on the sweater of ASU’s #21?

I agree and disagree. IMHO if we had that kid and IF he could skate, kind of like the Cornell kids, then yes I think the coaches would love to have him. I don't think he is going out of his way to find kids who might remake the team into a more physical grind it out team. Personally I'd like to see more speed not less. And I'd like to see a combination of size and speed.
