Michigan Tech 2016 Off-Season: Good Things are Taking Shape... The Shape of an Oval

Re: Michigan Tech 2016 Off-Season: Good Things are Taking Shape... The Shape of an Ov

According to Mel on the WCHA preseason media teleconference, Keegan Ford is dealing with some anxiety issues and will not be on campus this fall. There is a possibility he could be added for the spring semester, but that's not guaranteed yet. Mel expressed his hope that Keegan gets healthy first.

The western hockey blogs expects Angus Redmond and Mith Reinke to make big contributions this year.

Do the folks at the paint store realistically think Angus wins out?
It is very intriguing to wonder about.

Mel while with Red were used to going with one guy even if a freshman.

I don't know if he wins out but with what is in front of him, he is the most likely all-rookie goalie, even if he plays 25% of games. Personally, I think he's the most heralded of the 3 and has the advantage of not sitting on the bench the last couple years so your guess is as good as mine. Wintjes probably had the best Jr stats and is the only one with NCAA experience and is likely the frontrunner. Reinke, I like a ton and if he's given the chance he could be top 4 quickly. Our defense is stacked so who knows.

Re: Michigan Tech 2016 Off-Season: Good Things are Taking Shape... The Shape of an Ov

Youngstown released their 2016-17 roster and there are 7 players not already committed to College Hockey. 1 is an former MJ player so he's out. Here are the rest:

Griffin Loughran (F, 11/13/98, Buffalo, NY)
Chase Gresock (F, 8/13/98, Powell, OH)
Michael Karow (D, 12/18/98, Green Bay, WI)
Ivan Kulbakov (G, 9/18/96, Belarus)
Max Ellis (F, 1/18/00, Plymouth, MI)
Coale Norris (F, 5/25/97, Oxford, MI)

Based on age, position and home town, Max Ellis seems like the biggest target for Mel & company. Karow would also have made the list if we didn't have so many d-men already committed. Norris, Gresock and Loughran could all be possible players to fill out next year's roster if they're worth it.

Based on this forum it is hard to believe Tech is less than a week from puck drop! Did someone start a season thread that I can't find. I've never seen this site so quiet!
Did anyone watch Saturdays scrimmage? Thoughts?
How did the new comers look?
Hope to get some insight from the coaches show; listening now!

Listened to the show on demand last night.
Coach indicated 3/4 lines are set and similar to last year.
I recall the Baltus Lucchini Gillies being a staple, but seems to me the others adjust without Petan and M. Gould.
Sounds like Blacklock or Anderson will be one of the 4 centers with the other taking a LW slot.
D is set with at least knowing which 7 will travel on a consistent basis. Coach mentioned all will play.
To me, it sounded like Wintjes will be in goal, but that according to Coach is not confirmed yet.

Based on what I heard this is my gut feel for forwards:

Heinonen-Steman-Lesperance
Baltus-Lucchini-Gillies
Jackson-Neville-Sturos
TBD-Blacklock-TBD (Gould will be on one of these wings, sounds like he can play either side)
The other wing spot sounds wide open. Coach still sounds unsure about E. Anderson.

Defensively it sounds like Rienke will see some time. Wonder who he goes in for. Birk or Liebinger if I had to guess.

I didn't get any clear signal on goal tending. Sounds like coach likes Kero and Redmond athleticism. Wintjes makes sense from an experience stand point but the decision sounded wide open to me.

In my opinion, they should go with whichever goalie is the most talented. Yeah a freshman may be nervous, but he'll get over the nerves (hopefully). And in the longrun we'll better off with the most talented guy. Because of this I'm guessing Redmond and Wintjes split the games this weekend. If either struggles, or maybe regardless, Kero gets a game next weekend.

IMHO Wintjes gets the first game due to "money in the bank" with Kero traveling also. Again with "money in the bank"
If Tech wins Saturday, Wintjes plays Sunday. If they lose Kero is in til he loses then "Beef" gets the next shot.

First of all, when it comes to nicknames, "Beef" is already taken. Second, its a non-conference game, they will travel all 3 goalies, so it could be either Kero or Redmond. The reason I prefer Redmond is, I think he's the goalie of the future, if he's good now, I say ride him for 4 years.

You are correct, Coach did say everyone will travel. I still think Kero will get 2nd chance. Just my opinion.

Regarding "Beef"; I believe coach called him "Beef" and the nickname was used in at least one of the articles I read about him.

I like your line up, I agree that Gould might get a look and the rest looks pretty good. All the goaltenders look good to me, but I'd pick Wientjes. Can't wait to hear those dulcet tones of Dirk's voice.

Best in college hockey IMHO

Dirk makes the games sound more exciting than they actually are...to the point that I haven't bought the video stream since 2012–13. Thanks for saving me money, Dirk!

Could be they are so close they may rotate in some manner.

You know, I think when he committed Redmond was probably the most heralded player of the 3 but at the same time, his stats were not better than Kero in the same league and Wintjes has the advantage of playing a D1 game. I'm not all that worried about the position other than the fact that there are some important games early in the season while we try to figure out who the #1 goalie is.

Goalies are in good hands with coach Shawhan.

Wish there was an option with WCHA TV to listen to Dirk's broadcast for away games. I was able to play on pasty.net and sync with video feed from the previous provider but have not been able to do it with Stretch for some reason. If anyone has come up with a way to sync Dirk and away video feeds please share. I have tried with pasty and tunein.
