I counted three, maybe four slashes against Jagger on that play before he scored. He'll do just fine in the "clutch n grab" WCHA.

Don't often see a right shooting skater scoring on a right catching goalie - both are not "normal".

For those of you that care, Jamie Russell stepped down in June as head coach of Elmira (ECHL) and today he was announced as the GM/Head Coach of the new Worcester Railers (ECHL) which will begin play in 2017-18.

Nice. Along with Scott White's promotion this summer these are just two reminders that just because you're great at one aspect of hockey (playing, coaching college, coaching professionally, front office, etc) doesn't mean you will be great at all of them. However when you find the one you excel at, there are no limits.

Although he did a good job at Tech, Russell is clearly finding more success in the professional ranks.
Watters, while he had a long-standing career as a player, clearly wasn't cut out to coach.
Pearson, while he didn't have a professional career as a player after college, he clearly has the skills to motivate and grow amateur players.
Makes you wonder who out of the last 10 years of players might show up in a coaching or leadership role somewhere down the line.

Ranking those 4 as Tech players -

1) Tim Watters. Dominant defenseman, jumped into the play effectively and locked down on his own end. Great leader too, led the Huskies to the national semifinal & a 3rd place NCAA finish after spending a year with the Canadian Olympic team.

2) Jamie Russell. Physical presence, played extended minutes in an era when Tech faced great offensive talent. Effective penalty killer, not much of a shot blocker but made very few mistakes as a stay-at-home guy.

3) Scott White. Energy player with a mean streak, and a more than capable offensive game from the blue line.

4) Mel Pearson. Played as mostly a 3rd or 4th line forward, showed flashes of skill especially when opposing teams concentrated on stopping star players like Boehm & Salt. Didn't get many special teams opportunities with lots of talent on the roster.

That was going to be my guess as I only saw two play. Might also be the reason tMel is such a good coach

Mel was not the fastest player, but very smart and certainly a favorite guy in the locker room. There was definitely a reason he wore the A as a senior (Watters was the captain). Fans loved him too, he was a guy who looked like he truly enjoyed playing for the Huskies and it showed all the time.

Bit of a surprise but Madison (USHL) Cut Cooper Watson yesterday
 
New commitment: Marcus Mitchell, a '98 forward playing for Salmon Arm. Put up 21 points in 52 games with the Silverbacks last year as a 17-year-old. He ranked 18th in the BCHL in points per game for U18s (Jagger Williamson ranked 13th).

Ummmm.... Did someone post this and I missed it? Minnesota had a summer "rec" league for Minnesota based elite level hockey players called "Da Beauty League". Some of you may know the league honorary Commissioner and namesake of John Scott's Cup (note the handle) league championship trophy. Not sure who made that sign in front of the Cup however... #26??

Amazing story, how did he not play for Tech? It's not like they were a powerhouse at that time. Did he even try out? Seems like he should have made it for sure. Must have been around either tail end of Sertich and/or start of Russell. Probably could have kept Russell out of the cellar for a couple years. Would be interesting to know how he slipped through the cracks.

IIRC, the rumor at the time was that he tried out, but that the team had a no smoking rule, and he either didn't want to, or was unable to quit.

At least, that is what I recall JSR posting here, when he was around.

Its seems there is always more to a story of why one person gets recruited over another. Not always about the person, sometimes the coach or other factor. I do think the better recruiters try to dig deeper and don't dangle promises. Thoughts? And is there a radio broadcast coming up?
 
Looks like there is an internal scrimmage Saturday. Does any one know if this will be live streamed and announced by Dirk like years past. Haven't seen any details other than scrimmage at 11:00 am

Weren't scrimmages in the evening in years past?

This scrimmage might be different since it is occurring before the first day of "official full" practice...
