MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

I have a question: how come the UP teams aren't doing the Superior Showcase anymore?

According to Damon Whitten (from a couple of years ago,) Minnesota-Duluth lost interest, causing it to fall by the wayside. That was part of the reason behind LSSU trying to setup non-conference series with NMU and Tech.

It doesn't make much sense when 3 teams are in the same conference. You'd end up playing non-conference against teams in your conference, which is a completely idiotic idea.

Last season, NMU and LSSU played a home and home non-conference series. It may seem odd to play such a series, but it helped travel costs for both teams and enabled them to each get another home game.

And did absolutely nothing to help the PWR of either team. Pointless, unless you don't give a rip about PWR, in which case, why play at all?

What is losing all those road games doing for Tech's RPI?

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

It's a real shame it didn't continue....so I could visit LSSU for some reason.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Sub a 14 hour bus ride to Mercyhurst for LSSU. How much more positive would the pairwise done then?

Tech could have made the tourney last year with 1 additional win against Army. So, yes, 1 additional game against a poor non conference opponent can have an impact. Its really simple math.

Tech could have made the Tourney with an additional win against several teams.

Just positioning for the GLI. The year Tech destroyed UM on our home ice, we lost a squeaker at the GLI. That is our motivation this year, after doing everything but winning at Yost, including out fanning your fans, we plan to have a fun GLI in another heated matchup with Red's crew. Hopefully, the refs are neutral this time around and understand the details of the goalie interference call.

What Shirtless said.

There is no denying that a non conference win is more helpful in PWR than an additional conference win. To argue otherwise just proves that you don't understand PWR.

Michigan has the luxury of playing almost exclusively at home in non-conference. If Tech took the Michigan approach of "don't play any road games against good teams, you might lose," they might as well just fold up the program. What's the point of having a team if you're afraid of challenges?

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Angus Redmond getting the start tonight. I don't think Mel really had a choice with how poorly Kero and Wintjes have played.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Not a bad first period, 1-0 Tech, shots 19-8 Tech after 1. Two big things stand out to me after the first, our passing has improved for sure, but still needs some work, leading players too far and definitely not as crisp as they should be. the second is the play behind the net/behind the redline in our own zone, very sloppy in the first with some really bad turnovers and that NMU was close to capitalizing on, need to work on that, otherwise looking infinitely better than the MSUM and even UAH series.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Way to go Tech!! I think we've found our goalie, Angus Redmond with the SO in his first career start. He looked very good out there, never looked shaky to me, just solid all night, with some very very good and timely saves.

Overall that was a very solid game, could have easily been 4 or 5-0 but Tolvanen is very good and made some extremely good saves. If Redmond can continue his strong play and we improve a bit on our puckhandling and decision making, watch out, we will be tough to stop. Amazing what a few weeks will do, we looked lost against MSUM and now we outplayed Michigan on the weekend last weekend and pretty well handled NMU tonight, as much as it sucks to be in the hole we are in, look what we did in the second half last year, if we can string wins together we could do some damage, my optimism is returning.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Looked like a great crowd. Good for Redmond to get the shutout.

Mel's postgame with Dirk:
Good 1st period, sag in the 2nd, but credit to NMU
Big goal by Jackson
Credit to PKers, nice job
Sturos/Neville have killed penalties for 4 years, block shots etc
Redmond with a few big saves, did a good job when we needed him tonight
Good PP movement, big to get lead with PP goal
Got away from some of the things we need to do to have success in the 2nd
We're a good skating team, so can get up/down olympic sheet tomorrow
Thanks to our students/fans, great support and great fans

First career start, first career shutout. I like it.

I'll echo this. We'd have waxed them pretty good, if not for Tolvanen. Redmond needs to be ready to go into hostile territory tomorrow. They all need to be ready, in fact - need to finish more of our chances.

Can we get a student section like this for every home series, please?
