Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Ahhh... Tech hockey finding a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory for over 30 years.. OK, got the negativity out of my system.

I thought the D was fairly solid. Especially the second half of the game. The PK 1-5 not bad either. You take dumb penalties against a team with as much talent as Michigan and eventually they will beat you. They need to finish on the chances they have. The big guns Heinonen and L'Esperance are nonexistent at the moment. Two incredibly bad goals on Kero's part. I have no idea what he was thinking/doing on the last goal.

GOALTENDING GOALTENDING GOALTENDING... one of them needs to step up and play like they really want the starting position.. :(

I'm sure the coach is having a lot of sleepless nights thinking about it.
BTW the alumni association is at Dominik's on monroe street starting at 6 pm, order off the menu, but they don't have any tickets left.
I think the crowd will be smaller for Michigan and bigger for Tech tonight.

Going to be a fun one tonight. I think Tech plays their best game of the year tonight, the key is no bad goals against.
Did you all see the move Auk made last night. Heino was good, L'Esperance was strong on the puck, Baltus scores tonight as he had several chances.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

No doubt the coaches are losing some sleep trying to figure out what's going on. I bought tickets through the Alumni Association for tonight's game and ended up in the same section (28) three rows closer than last nights tickets through the Athletic Dept. I don't really like sitting up in BFE even if it is with the bestest and loudest fans in all of college hockey. Which is why I usually buy the tickets on my own.

The wife and I plan on stopping in at Dominik's before the game. Might depend on where we find parking.

I'll be in section 4 in the front row on the end.

Goaltending still killing us, 2 goals on 10 shots, .800 save % will not get it done in D1 hockey, never has and never will.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

I don't see how Michigan's tying goal should have counted. Pastujov initiated contact that spun Wintjes around. The only argument for allowing the goal to stand is that Wintjes would have been out of position and unable to stop the shot had there been no contact. But the NCAA rulebook doesn't allow for that: "Goals should be disallowed only if an attacking player, either by positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to defend the goal." Not his ability to defend the portion of the goal where the puck was shot, but the goal. And Pastujov certainly did that.

EDIT: The refs also ignored a blatant Michigan penalty on Tech's late power play. Can't have a late 5-on-3, after all.

Also, Dane Birks is much improved over what I saw of him last year.

Right there, but we fanned on a few too many chances.

Mel's postgame with Dirk:
Real good game tonight, can go through the lineup and say many had a good game
Good defensive effort on the road, against a good hockey team
When you outshoot a tema like we did, 5-0 in OT, 27-9 in last two periods
Liked our compete/effort
We had some good chances, but some guys are struggling scoring goals
We'll be in a good shape if we compete like this
Michigan goal counting, Wintjes got wiped out, bad call, but on the road in tough building, B1G refs, no excuses but Wintjes gets taken out, official count, Tech guy hooks UM, so he falls into Wintjes
Like our team effort, a lot more patient with the puck
Our speed showed, our freshmen played well, we'll only get better
Beretta wil get some confidence from that goal
Excellent character to see our team come back today after a rough way to lose yesterday
We did not get breaks in this series at all, need to keep working and it'll even out, we'll get some things in our favor soon
Good for our goalies to get minutes, they'll only get better

my sports weekend sucks. except the Cubs. and maybe the Lions, yea, right.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

UM should have lost this game. Handful of turnovers in its own zone that lead to scoring chances, one IIRC did result in one. Outshot and outskated, but just happened to get a few breaks and escape with a tie.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Well a better game though much the same as friday.
I thought Tech did a lot of things really well. Very few neutral zone turnovers, better defense, getting the puck deep better, forcing them to react to us. I thought Wintjes was descent. It's hard to fault him on any of the goals.

I thought most of the players had a good game. Jake Jackson needs to learn how to share the puck better. If he does he will score more goals. He has a lot of tools, but he has to learn it's a team game.
Baretta was pretty good, and his goal was nice, but he's not quick enough to loose pucks. He needs to work on that. I agree Birks was better, and the pp and pk really still need work. The other players were very good and we were especially good on face-offs. Overall, if we play this way going forward we will be very tough.
The shoot out.. if you face a real big goalie like that who covers a lot of the angle, I think you have to Deek him and not just shoot. All of Michigan's players tried to Deek the goalie,... our guys did not, except for Auk.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

I agree, Tech played well last night, just worried right now that the forwards are all snakebitten as Leibinger out of position is pushing them with point totals.
Heinonen, L'Esperance, Lucchini, Steman, Jackson, and Baltus point totals are lower than expected.
Sturos seems to be the only forward showing consistency with putting the puck in the net.
The freshman are slowly taking over key spots. Smith, Beretta, and Gerrie have been great.
I think the lines are set, they are all equally balanced and provide the team depth that we all thought would be a strength.
I thought this freshman class was the best from top to bottom in years collectively, I am curious what plays out as we still have Pederson, Brice waiting their chance.
Are Anderson and Blacklock used sparingly for the rest of the season, I still think both bring a lot to the table. I think Gould will also be commanding playing time.
Another great goalie to face this week, hope Tech can get it going on the O-side of the game.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

A few of my takeaways from the Mel P show:
Want to push to get more out of Neville offensively.

Recruiting is going well, got a few commitments recently, looking to get a couple this week too.

No plans to redshirt Brice and Pedersen. Waiting for the right time to play. Pedersen was on the trip this weekend.

We're healthy. Gillies blocked a shot and didn't finish the game, but he's looking like he'll be OK.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Are they celebrating the '75 team on Friday?

The TV pregame show on FoxUP will be featuring live interviews from many of the big names from the 1975 team. Let's hope that one guy on the announce team can keep from getting a little starstruck by his childhood heroes.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

I have a question: how come the UP teams aren't doing the Superior Showcase anymore?
