Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

I don't think a lot of Canadians play in the USHL. Plus with future Tech teammates there in Penticton, I'm guessing he stays north of the border. The BCHL is generally a half-step better than the Alberta league.

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

I've got an idea for a new logo... What if we took MTU and we stacked them vertically? The T fits so nice in the U. And then we angled it, just a little bit. Just think about how good that would look!
Back in the 70s, the stacked MTU sticker was common on car bumpers and back windows. It was easily identifiable from a distance. It's still my favorite and I have a cap with it. The bill is black, the mesh is yellow, and the front is white with the 1-1/2" stacked logo centered and HUSKIES in black embroidery on each side.

I did an extensive search of husky logos when we discussed this back in 2011. Northern Illinois does have a nice logo. Husky logos tend to fall into two categories: wolve-like and friendly (UConn). I've ended up being in favor of a simple paw print á la Clemson. It's simple, works well with the script, and is versatile in many applications. It would look good on the shoulders of jerseys. I'm not familiar with any other "Husky" school using a paw logo:

Northeastern Huskies from Hockey East uses the paw on the shoulder and Husky on the front.

2011... 2013... 2015... Seems this is not a hot topic in even numbered years.
Friendly Huskies? In a word, NO.

Huskies fans can be friendly, but I don't want a friendly mascot and/or team... kick their ice!

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

So with the Stanley Cup finals starting tonight, it got me thinking - who is the last player from Michigan Tech to get their name on the Cup? Off the top of my head Randy McKay in 2000 I think is still the most recent. I thought maybe Conner or Scott might have snuck on as part season players, but Conner arrived in Pittsburgh the year after they won in 2009. Scott arrived in Chicago just after the Blackhawks won the cup in 2010 and had moved on to the Rangers before the Hawks won again in 2012.

I would like to think that Tanner Kero is in the best position to be the next one. If the Blackhawks can find a way to work the salary cap (maybe bring in some younger, lower price talent, *cough* Kero *cough*) they could be back in the Finals again soon when Kero is eligible to play.

Davis Payne, LA Kings, 2014....though as an assistant coach. That counts...right? http://kings.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=729144

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

I think a solid black running husky silhouette would go nicely with the script.

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

Yep, it looks good, however, I'd skip the friendly husky on the front and just go with the script. I'd also go with solid black paw prints.

There sure are a lot of "Husky" teams. Maybe we should take that Michigan fan's suggestion and switch to the Bears... ;) I think U of Maine is the only Bear school with a hockey team.

If we're changing the name, I vote we go with Widowmakers. Plus, then we'd have an official beer, along with a tie in to Copper Country history. ;)

UConn's husky crosses the line from friendly to cuddly. More appropriate for a women's figure skating team than a hockey team.

Michigan Tech Miners would be most appropriate. The logo could be crossed pick axes and the mascot would look like MSU's Sparty with a lighted hardhat and carry a pick ax. He could throw pasties into the crowd...

Brown is also the Bears, and despite their nickname officially being the Big Red Cornell uses a bear in all their imagery. And we've already got the Alaska Nanooks in the WCHA. The next one would be the 5th, making it the most used nickname/image in college hockey (there are 4 Wildcats/Catamounts/Bobcats, 3 Tigers, and 3 Bulldogs).

Considering that Michigan tech was the first college hockey team to use "Huskies" (1919 as opposed to 1929 for N'Eastern and 1931 for SCSU), this is either some kind of gag or the most inane suggestion yet. Especially since the root idea came from a skunk fan.

For those keeping score at home...
Cats - NMU, Vermont, QU, UNH
Tigers - CC, RIT, Princeton
Bulldogs - UMD, Yale, Ferris
Huskies - MTU, SCSU, U-Conn, Northeastern

Just imagine if the old CCHA and WCHA had merged
Two huskies, two bulldogs, two mavericks... deuces wild.

ha ha. that's a great idea. Crossed pick axes would be cool.

Re: Michigan Tech 2015 off-season I: Building on what we've learned...

For those of you in the UP from Newberry west, Tech and NMU have re-upped with TV6 to televise all four hockey games between the two schools in the 2015-16 season. The deal will also include the football game, men's and women's basketball, and volleyball contests on TV as well. Most games will air on FoxUP 6.2, with the slight possibly of moving to the main TV6 6.1 signal or the new 6.3 "GRIT" subchannel.
