Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

Does anyone know if Friday's game in Wisconsin will be available online anywhere? I don't see any video option on the Badgers website. Very disappointing if the video is not available some how.

I do see Saturdays game is on the Big Ten Network.

it is available for $9.95 by purchasing a month pass of Badgers Big Ten 2go service. That service renews to make sure you cancel the service.

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

A little planning on the organizers part would have been nice since the GLI is the grand-daddy of holiday tourneys.I look forward to it every year.

tMel commented on the scheduling of this during the Blue Line Luncheon for tUMD series. Didn't understand it, didn't care for it, *shrug*. No clue why they (MTU) did it this way.

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

Summary of yesterdays Mel Pearson show. Good to hear Neville is okay, and may play.

Mel Pearson Show summary for 12-31:
Mel called in from Chicago, no ice in Madison due to the basketball game so practiced in Chicago

On MI Game:
Disappointing loss, maybe toughest this year
Guys came to play, outshot them 17-5 in 1st, just couldn't score, hard to force offense
Diff Sunday to Monday, offensive execution Monday was not good, executed game plan, but couldn't finish
We just weren't as hungry around the net
0-1, MI, a little lax on coverage, Dmen shot that found its way into the net
Tough to give up the goal, we had one of our better 1st periods in a long time
1-1 Gould, Gould/Kero/Petan line has chemistry, can see their confidence, has skill, speed, grit, senior leadership
Now need consistency from other lines
Gould has become a serious hockey players, he's very social/outgoing, but on the ice surface have to be serious, he's done that, can be himself but a diff player on ice, came back in great shape too
Thought we had a strong 2nd period, had an advantage in zone play/puck possession
Pietila had a great PP opportunity in the slot early in 2nd, shot it wide, critical point in game with chance to take lead
1-2, MI Hyman, good job on PK, but goal was on a rush as we made a change, normally Jamie will stop that shot
We had chances in 3rd after that, Gould with a great chance, normally he'd put that in
Too bad, we had a great MTU crowd, one of best MTU crowd's Mel's seen, disappointed for fans

On FSU:
1-0 Eick, wanted fresh legs, L'Esperance came in and did a nice job, a big body like Joel can create room/space, did a good job creating this goal
2-0 Gould, Kero got the puck on net, he had a good week overall, wide open net for Gould
3-0 L'Esperance, happy for Joel, he's had chance, but this should help his confidence, remember Sturos having tough 1st half, Joel's bein in/out lineup, this could be start of real solid 2nd half
As game went on Joel L'esperance got better and better
4-0 Kero, beat Motte, great move
4-1, redirect goal, didn't like giving up that goal, don't want to give them any life
4-2, PPG, didn't like that one, sure Jamie wants it back
Played well after that goal, didn't give up a lot after that, every game is so important in PWR
PP - we had limited opportunities, good looks but couldn't finish
Neville is good, 50/50 for the weekend, no headaches or anything, concussion is main concern, not sure if he'll practice today, not as serious as originally thought

Questions for Mel:
When 5x3 is it better to have Blake/Tanner at the same time?
Not necessarily, we have a few different group. Some is how much they've been on the ice.

Watching UMD PP, they are always moving and generation scoring chances, how do we get back to being less deliberate?
It's a work in progress, we'll have stretches of good and bad. Some is out players, and some is other team. Hard to force offense. We'll keep working on it.

How different is it for focus of exam week vs. being off for break?
Like to have normal daily activity, more focused and organized. Like busy, keeps you in a normal routine.
Even worried about this weekend, traveling a lot of downtime, rather guys be in class focused like a normal trip.

Was there an extra emphasis for short quick shifts late in Saturday's game?
Not as concerned about matching lines, but yeah short shifts, need to be best conditioned team. Just takes one long shift to get out of sorts.

Mel, how hard was it to recruit current skill players, is recruiting getting easier?
Always have challenges, publicity is good. We're talking to young men now, that a few years ago that wouldn't be interested. Sometimes recruits seek us out.
Convincing players to come to Tech still has same issues, but it's gotten better and opened doors with how we're playing. Know there are a number of recruit at GLI too to see how we play.

What's toughest adjustment to being a favorite in games?
Just the expectation that come along with it. More distractions, NHL more interested, media interviews etc. Games are the same, but so many outside things going on.
You'll get teams best effort now too, they know they need to show up and play Tech.

Do you plan on giving Phillips any games off?
Good question, when you're winning, no. We go over the lineup, we like our other goalies, they've made strides.

On WI:
They're a big ten school, better than their record. They beat and tied Ferris.
They've had a tough schedule and been in most of their games. We have to be ready to play.

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

I sure agree on one thing. Wisconsin is way better than their record and will play well. We can't afford any games off from here on.

I think this is good news on recruiting. I'm real impressed with how Coach Pearson develops guys. Look at Gould for instance, he's come a long way. I think that counts for something. Especially with coaches of younger players and advisors to younger players.

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

a Saturday/Sunday GLI would have made more sense to me. probably some reason it would not have worked.

wish we were going to the Wisco games. love the atmosphere at the Kohl Center and the Crease Creatures. we went out to a bar prior to the game - in our Tech gear - alone in a sea of red Badger jerseys and expected to get harassed. instead, fans were very nice and friendly. fun times!

Look at what Tyler Heinonen has become as well! I credit Mel and his staff for making him a much stronger player with defense in his quiver...

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

Today's weekend preview article. I didn't realize this is our first Olympic size ice sheet of the year.
http://www.mininggazette.com/page/c...es-begin-second-half-in-Madison.html?nav=5009

Huskies begin second half in Madison
MADISON, Wis. - After a less-than-perfect performance at the Great Lakes Invitational Sunday and Monday that led to a third-place finish, the No. 5 Michigan Tech Huskies remain on the road this weekend to face the Wisconsin Badgers at the Kohl Center.

Normally, this road trip is a tough one because the former Western Collegiate Hockey Association members are always difficult at home, especially when one considers the fact that they play on an Olympic-sized ice sheet, meaning it is wider than the standard rink. However, head coach Mel Pearson actually sees this series as a bit of a blessing right now, given the Huskies' upcoming schedule.

"This is the first time we will be on the Olympic sheet this year," said Pearson. "And it is good to get on that before Northern."

Of course, not all Olympic sheets are built equal.

"Offensively, you are a ways away from the net, especially at the Kohl Center with its deep corners," said Pearson. "You can get lulled away from the net, and we have to pay attention to that."

The Badgers, who are off to their worst start in recent memory at 1-10-1, know how to use their big rink to their advantage.

"They will try to draw you out to those areas where you cannot get good looks," said Pearson. "We have to pay attention to those things on offense and on our special teams."

Just because the Huskies are 14-4-0 heading into their first series of the New Year while the Badgers have only beaten one team, Pearson expects his team to be ready for anything.

"This is our first series to start the second half," said Pearson. "We believe we have created an atmosphere where the guys want to get into the lineup."

On Monday, Pearson used this knowledge to his advantage as he pulled four skaters out of his lineup and replaced them with four sets of fresh legs and the strategy worked. Freshman Joel L'Esperance notched a goal and an assist against Ferris State while junior Walker Hyland added an assist.

Pearson believes that the team will continue to work hard as everyone his staff brings on road trips wants to play.

For a pair of Huskies, playing the Badgers at the Kohl Center is the closest thing for the pair of them to playing at home. Junior C.J. Eick and sophomore Cliff Watson are both from Appleton. Instead of being a distraction for either player, Pearson feels the duo are fired up about the experience.

"They are both excited about playing here," said Pearson. "I don't see it as a distraction for either of them. I think they are more excited to be playing in front of friends and some family."

Eick has a very special memory in the Kohl Center from his freshman year when he had to drive to Madison on Saturday and dress that night, assisting on Blake Hietala's game-tying goal in the third period.

This year's Badgers are led by sophomore Grant Besse, who has three goals and a team-high seven points. Sophomore Tim Davison and senior Joseph LaBate each have six points.

Senior Joel Rumpel has played the majority of games in goal. He is 1-8-1 with a 3.24 goals against average and a 89.7 percent save percentage.

While the Badgers have struggled mightily, Pearson plans to continue to stick with junior Jamie Phillips between the pipes.

Phillips' numbers speak for themselves as he is sixth in the nation in goals against average with a 1.73. He is also sixth in save percentage at 93.8 percent.

"We are taking it one game at a time," said Pearson. "He has certainly been great for us all year, and I don't see that changing. Jamie is our starting goalie at this point."

Game times this weekend are 8:07 p.m. Eastern.

Huskies are 4-4 in their last 8. Losing to Wisconsin would be deadly in the PWR as they are ranked near the bottom. Big ice should suit Tech's speed.

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

Wow.

I saw Andy Johnson tweet that the UW radio guy said the Badgers will make a return trip to Houghton. Was that known? Good we didn't give in for a Green Bay series.

Mel's postgame interview:
Didn't like the start with penalty, good SHG
They'll be a lot better tomorrow, we'll have to be better
Got sloppy and some things we didn't like, need to learn how to finish and play the right way to the last minute
Bad change on their goal, didn't get puck behind their D to make line change, need to learn
We made some mistakes, but we won and we can learn from them, so down the road we will not make the mistakes
Kero, Petan, Pietila got goals, good for Blake to get 2 tonight
Need to get Johnstone more, played well tonight
Changed lines a bit, like oru lines, btu we have Neville waiting and anxious
Like the Eick line, strong on the puck, created chances
Wintjes got in, looked good and made himself big on PK
We've got depth in goal, like Devin, Matt and obviously Jamie
Some good things on PP, could've been crisper, but with short week didn't get to work on
Last PP, put out guys that normally don't do PP, don't want to run it up, sloppy on that one
PKers were real good tonight, 3 PPG, 1 SHG, contribution from a lot of guy
UW will be better tomorrow, need to be ready right away

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

Fun to put up 8, but that was not a contest. It's kind of disheartening to see a proud program like Wisconsin play that badly. We'll see how they respond tomorrow...

It was being discussed with Barry and Eaves in fall. Sounds like the ink in finally on the dotted line as of tonight. Also sounds like Mel wants more despite the 8-1 blowout.

Man, how long ago were some WI fans saying this?

Funny, I'm completely ok with it. Barry can shove it up his ***. Karma, *****es.

Re: Michigan Tech 2014-2015

I think a night like last night is good for Tech. You need to beat the teams you are supposed to beat. Putting an 8 goal drubbing on the other team is always good when you can spread the scoring around. I was surprised that no one was more than +3 on the evening. I hope there is a similar result tonight. A 15 goal weekend would put the GLI in the rear view mirror quickly.

Wisconsin looked like they gave up after they changed goalies. Some guys were just standing out there like trees. When they scored I clapped for that effort. For us, getting both captains on the score sheet was big. The Michigan game was a heartbreaker.
