Michigan Tech 2012-13 Preseason Thread: Draft picks, video feeds, and Mel, oh my

I think the owners are being more greedy than the players but when someone is *****ing about getting paid $5 million a year vs. $6 million I would call that greedy as well, seriously, you're getting paid to play a game while the fans who watch you have real jobs making 1/100th what you do, you should be happy with getting paid $1 million a year.

For every superstar player "arguing" over $5 Mil instead of $6 mil, there are a dozen Chris Conner types who are earning league minimum or just over that ALSO have to take a pay cut.

Take close to the league minimum, 600k per year. Take 40% off for taxes. (Reminder, hockey players must pay taxes in each city/state they play in for every game)

Leaves you 350K

Deduct health insurance, league membership fees (union dues), apartment, utilities, car, food, gas, everything we scrimp and save for earning just 50K a year.

And to top it off, they have just a decade at best to earn and save what they can where we work up to 40 years.

This isn't about the Lidstroms, Crosbys, and Ovechkins, this lockout affects the Conners, Wilsons, Oystricks, and Santorellis of hockey.

Re: Michigan Tech 2012-13 Preseason Thread: Draft picks, video feeds, and Mel, oh my

Tyler Heinonen - Muskegon (USHL)
Chris Leibringer - Muskegon (USHL)
Joel L'Esperance - Tri-City (USHL)
Michael Neville - Cedar Rapids (USHL)
Joe Schuldt - Sioux Falls (USHL)
Dylan Steman - Cedar Rapids (USHL)

USHL Fall Classic kicks off a couple hours from now. Excited to see how all of the recruits perform!

Looks like Muskegon, Cedar Rapids and Souix Falls have played some exhibition games.

Steman has a good start; goal and assist in 3 games

Leibinger has an assist so far in 2 games

John Scott with his mechanical engineering degree and many other Michigan Tech alumni will be fine.

has there been any discussion of the league minimum actually taking a reduction or are we just talking about a teams salary cap rolling back a certain percent. I can't image that the minimum could really drop, is on par compared to other sports for the top league. I can't see that number taking a rollback.

Re: Michigan Tech 2012-13 Preseason Thread: Draft picks, video feeds, and Mel, oh my

If it isn't a direct rollback, I thought the league wanted more to be held in "escrow" than the players currently have held. Which, is kinda the same thing since they won't get that money til later.

And, there is that whole argument over hockey related revenue which is tied to the salary cap (and thus price fixing player salaries).

Oh, I did forget to add in the NHL escrow and some players have agent fees tied to their pay too. So lop another 10 to 15 percent off in addition to taxes. So right out of the gate a player could be missing half his paycheck before he starts deducting day-to-day needs.

And seriously, it's an ME degree, but how usefull will it be when he hasn't practiced anything related to it since he graduated? Plus he would still need to take the EIT.

The EIT is only required if you eventually want to become a practicing PE. I passed the EIT as school wound down, but never finished the PE process as I would never have a need in my industry for a PE other than to make my business cards more impressive. However, if you doubt the value of the degree, my company is a good example. I do the same work in my position as another person with a 4-year business degree. My salary is $10+ more than the other person simply because of the degree and different job title (Application Engineer vs Application Specialist). The similar situation would exist between two people doing the same job with ANY four-year degree and a 2-year degree. The pay grade difference is there because if you don't pay someone based on their education (even if you do the same work) they won't be working for you for long.

Its more than likely that John Scott already took the EIT, I did and so do most of us before we graduate, or shortly after. Even if he hasn't, it is far from required to get a job.

With how busy we are at work, if his resume came across my desk, I'd consider him for an interview. Taking the FE and PE are really only needed if you're going into consulting but I would say at least 80% of ME jobs don't require a PE or taking of the FE. I asked it in my interview for my current job and they said don't worry about it.

Exactly. Most ME's don't need it. I asked my current employer, who gave me an offer about 6 months before I graduated, if they wanted me to take the test, they said it was completely useless, and would prefer if I didn't waste my time on it, because it can cause liability issues for them down the line.

With the owners' proposal, the salary cap would roll back so significantly that all current contracts would be rolled back a certain percentage as well, or else some teams would be so comically over the cap that it would take them years to get below it. Maybe they would except players making the league minimum, but I would assume those roll backs would go across the board.

Poganski isn't really a realistic option for Tech at this point. Rostagno is a really nice pick-up for Tech though.

Bryce Reddick has inked with his hometown Las Vegas Wranglers.

EDIT: Here are the highlights of today's "Battle for #1"

Stephen Anderson said:
Genoe has looked pretty solid, too, moving faster side to side than I remember, but speed has sometimes put out of position. #mtuhky

Phillips let in a soft 5-hole goal and looks a tad sluggish today. Shields was giving instruction afterward. #mtuhky

One of the few things I didn't mention in my #mtuhky feature about Copley today is Mel mentioned his calm demeanor in net. Obvious today.

Pearson and Shields running part of #mtuhky practice today. Copley has a sweet new helmet, and he's been the best goalie today.

Joel L'Esperance had the game-tying goal in Tri City's 3-2 win over Indiana today.

Joe Schuldt added another 10 PIMs in Sioux Falls' 5-2 loss to Sioux City, bringing him to 19 in two games. :p

Tyler Heinonen picked up his first goal of the showcase, in Muskegon's 4-2 loss to Waterloo. Chris Leibinger managed to be +1 in that loss.

Real original. That got old about 12 months ago. :)
What else can he say? He knows its a bad hire so that is his only comeback. In other news, its also another local hire. I'm pretty sure everyone hired has been a colorado resident at the time of hire.
