Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Freshman looked very good last night. BPietila looked really strong, as did Tanner Kero. Riley Sweeney looked better than I expected. Looks like a strong freshman group. Robinson also had some great saves in the 3rd period. Anyone know what's going on with the pronunciation issues with the Pietilas' names? I never thought I'd see the day when people in the Copper Country couldn't pronounce Pietila! The pronunciation guide on the game sheet suggested that they use two different pronunciations. Mel pronounced it "pee ET uh luh", I also heard an announcer say "puh TIL uh", but all the Pietilas I know say "PEE tuh luh".

The downstate Pietilas say it "wrong". They use puh TIL uh.

If I could give Mel a grade so far it would be A+ in fact if I could give him a grade higher than that I would. We still need to get faster, etc, etc, but I really liked what I saw. However... I''m real unhappy about the video quality, it was totally unacceptable.

Well, the AIC games are still a go for me. Can anyone give me directions. Which entrance to the campus to take, where to park. where the rink is. etc...

The arena is at the top of MacInnes Drive. There are lots around the arena which are usually $5. US Hwy 41 enters campus from either end. At the stop light in campus, head up the hill. The arena is right at the top. You can park in a lot along MacInnes Drive or continue further to the main entrance of the arena. The lot closest is reserved for Husky Club members, however there are two lots further south for general use.

I have to agree that Pearson has established a different look for the team. Lakehead was by no means a cupcake game. They are one of the CIS's toughest teams. Look what CIS teams McGill and UOIT did to two of the strongest NCAA programs, Denver and Michigan this weekend. If the Huskies stay healthy, they can only get better.

missed the game and broadcast. Hearing that the freshmen did well, how about the seniors? Was the second line better you think, or did they just face easier opposition?

Same here... Going to fire off an email tommorow on it. It was not improved at all over last year...

Mostly tougher opposition, but the second line played real well and made creative plays. Overall the team is really much the same, but the comeback was a huge change. They have a lot to do if they are going to win any games, and the biggest thing is to speed the game up IMO. It's often been like watching sleepwalking at times as you know, and they have to improve this. But they will be a much tougher game for the other team. Honestly I liked the forth lines play a lot. They were physical and played their position well.

I'm hoping for Baker and Olson to have their best seasons, which would be saying a lot. In my mind there are equal chances that 1) It all comes together and we challenge for home ice, 2) We take baby steps and win about 8 games, or 3) Massive injuries/failure again.

Okay, first and foremost, the canned goal song and occasional playing of other canned music during stoppages it being looked into. I know who is the one running it but I don't know if it was his idea or the team's. But the pep band had minimal warning about it right before the game and were simply told that a goal song would play first. The Misfits President got to sample it right before the game but the recording is low quality and she can't even make out what it is. Plus the Mac has terrible speakers so it makes it that much worse.

Edit: The response I got was "It was a team request to change things up this season."

Also, not sure if anyone has mentioned it but we found out there is a new skating announcer for intermissions. Apparently her name is Rachel Chopp and she is a third year student that is part of the Tech skating club. Sooo basically Kali on skates.

I'm not sure about "equal chances". I'd say 2 is most likely.

I liked the up tempo play (I'm not sure if this was helped by the competition, but UMD only beat them 5-1 after resting Saturday, so that's a good sign), and the fact that they didn't give up many odd man rushes. Sweeney looked really good. Davis was bigger then I expected. Kero had a great game and got right up on the fore check and had some great chances. Robo made some great saves, but there were a couple of long ones that got by him too. The best part of the night was the 2500 fans in the stands. Especially the almost full student section.

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Summary of today's Mel Pearson Show:

Dirk: Always important with these type of games to have good, close contests to kind of see how the players react, hey?
Mel: No question.

Dirk: 46 shots on goal, I mean you have to be happy with the offensive opportunities anyway.
Mel: No question.

Dirk: Was it because the game was still close and maybe Josh struggled a little bit in the second period that you wanted to give him an opportunity to win that game?
Mel: No question.

Dirk: What is the criteria for a centerman? Is it all strength, is it intelligence, what has to go into that because draws are so important these days?
Mel: No question.

Dirk: And has faceoffs in the last three, four, five years become more important, winning draws, because of the new rules where you get penalized and a lot more draws in your own zone if you make mistakes?
Mel: No question ... so no question.

Dirk: I know we probably don't know a lot about American International, but, um, NCAA team out of the Atlantic Hockey league, and they're going to be ready to go.
Mel: No question.

Dear (geezer),

Welcome back to campus! I am excited to be back as well (class of '81). As your new Head Hockey Coach I know what a special place this is and how valuable you are to our program.

As our team begins a new season, I want to personally invite you to come out and support your Hockey Huskies. We need your passion, enthusiasm and spirit to help transform the MacInnes Student Ice Arena into an intimidating atmosphere for our opponents.

This week my staff, players and I will personally be on campus for Homecoming. We will be at the Homecoming Week events at lunchtime on Monday and Tuesday at the MUB circle, at Wadsworth on Wednesday, and at the MUB Commons on Thursday. Please stop by and say hello.

Remember, your free Experience Tech hockey ticket can be picked up Tuesday-Thursday before each home game by stopping at the SDC ticket office with your student ID.

Have a great school year and thank you for your support.

Go Huskies!

Mel Pearson
Head Hockey Coach

Big difference in team marketing already. If all the student tickets were gone for Lakehead, then all the student tickets should be gone for AIC too. Let's hope the winning continues now that the games count.

Great to see the changes! Wish I was up north instead of smelly cheese land. Can't make AIC, but I'm thinking I'm going to try for the Wisconsin series.
