Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

(Posted 10-19-11) I have officially realized that the national polls are nothing more than a popularity contest. Tech was "ranked" 21st with a record of 4-0 and was bumped out of the Top-20 by... Two Ivy league schools (Yale and Cornell) who have yet to play a game (Yale actually moved UP in the standings to 9th by not playing?!?)

I see someone has been reading our posts...

"When the No. 1 team really isn’t the No. 1 team" by Dave Starman (10/21/11)
http://www.uscho.com/2011/10/21/commentary-when-the-no-1-team-really-isnt-the-no-1-team/

"Polls are troubling because they can be a popularity contest and at other times can be very misleading... The Ivies haven’t played a game yet; how are Yale and Cornell in the top 10?... You can’t be ranked without playing a game!"

Any closer to my statement and they would have to pay me royalties.

I see your point but still don't completely agree. They obviously haven't proved that they deserve that ranking, but people can still think that they are a better team than the teams they're ranked ahead of. The Ivies are tough to deal with because they start a month later than everyone else. But then, what is the point of even looking at the poll 2 weeks into the season. Pretty much everyone is guessing at this point anyway.

His point about the football polls is ridiculous. Last week Michigan was ranked in the top ten and everybody who has seen a Michigan game thought that crazy. Every year Notre Dame starts the season ranked somewhere they shouldn't. The rankings are starting to look more balanced now because actually games have been played. In a month or two, no one will be complaining as much about this poll either.

I miss the old crowd of Tech students at the away games. tDarkness, MEg, Shirtless, Dorm Rat (over hereee!), Big Blue, that era. you all made alot of noise even when there were only a handful at the games. the cowbell!! we need the new students to step up and get some road trips going!!

For the past few years, I've seen the people I know dwindle in the student section. It was hilarious to "raid" it 3 years ago. It's less fun now. The alumni have mostly left and not have attended games, and the newbies don't get the MTU hospitality.

Just want to say, since I provided some criticism earlier, that last night's interviews (by Randy Heinonen?) were much improved. Better than most televised hockey interviews, even.

I don't know who does those. I get those from the university. When komquat is available, he does interviews as well that get edited together.

Pretty discouraging loss. given what went on. We needed the points. Still before the weekend started I wanted us to continue to get better than last week and last night, and I think we did that. We outplayed them and we played really hard as well. B Pietila is fantastic and will be in the nhl soon. Lets just go after them next week.

Actually, discipline was a huge issue tonight. Michigan Tech may have carried played but they too some very stupid penalties that hurt them a ton. Hopefully they aren't regressing in that part of their game.
