Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Here's respect for you!

Jake Kauppila, LW, Team Illinois, 95 – Jake looks much bigger and stronger this year and is a brash and fast north/south power-forward in the making. Really big kid just keeps growing and he’s already a tremendous skater who knows how to use his teammates. He’s the type of kid that already understands his role and is built for the higher levels of play. Committed to Michigan Tech but he may outgrow that program in time and commit to a better school down the road. AHR Rating: BB

"outgrow that program?" "a better school?" My goodness. But on the bright side, early reports indicate that our coaching staff has a great eye for undeveloped talent.

Where was that?

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Any other recruit rumblings?

Sturos? See he's back in the NA?

List from previous post

Tim Lappin-Tri-City (USHL)
Ryan Papa-Waterloo (USHL)
Matthew Joyaux-Chicago Mission U16 (Tier 1)
Alex Kubiak-Chicago Fury (Tier 1)
James Bonaguro-Chicago Fury (Tier 1)
Brett Curran-Chicago (USHL)
Rob Gawron-Chicago Fury (Tier 1)
Alex Roos-Cedar Rapids (USHL)
Matt Calabrese-Team Illinois (Tier 1)
Alex Sakellaropoulos-Chicago Fury (Tier 1)

Found this on L'Esperance; is he still a possibility with big brother gone?

Joel LEsperance, RW, Compuware, 95 Joel has improved significantly since last season and is Compuwares best player and prospect this year. Hes a big and skilled kid with a nose for the net and he has the ability to beat defenders one-on-one and put himself into prime scoring territory. Hes also working harder this year and competing physically in the corners. Was a dominant player in the offensive zone here. AHR Rating: ?

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

Not sure whose list I pirated but there are some good ones in the mix; some maybe dropping off

Tim Lappin, RW, Tri-City, 94 – Tim is a gritty center with top-six skill. Right now he’s on Tri-City’s third line but that should change in time. Just scratching the surface of his potential. AHR Rating: BBB

Ryan Papa, LW, Waterloo, 94 – Ryan might be as small as a penguin but it never seems to hold him back. He’s just as good in the USHL as he was playing for CYA and should put up great offensive numbers for Waterloo this year. NCAA teams would be smart to nab him. AHR Rating: BB

Matthew Calabrese - Scouted on Sept 9-11, 2011 @ Motor City Cup
Matt’s lack of improvement over the past year was really spotlighted this weekend while ’96-born players of a similar skill-set (Jake Linhart and Robert Nardella) earned more ice time and were more influential offensively and more effective defensively than Matt. AHR Rating: B

Matthew Joyaux - Scouted on Sept 9-11, 2011 @ Motor City Cup
Matt is as wide as he is tall and is a tremendous athlete. A dynamic skater with explosive all-compass mobility. Don’t let his lack of height fool you, he is a powerful hitter capable of knocking out opponents in the open-ice. Does a great job controlling gaps and angling his man off against the rush. Played an intelligent two-way game here. AHR Rating: B

James Bonaguro - Scouted on April 29-May 1, 2011 @ USHL Combine
Gives a solid effort across the entire sheet. Battles hard down low and on the boards. Jumps into a defensive role quickly. Keeps his head on a swivel. AHR Rating: BB

Rob Gawron - Scouted on September 21-24, 2011 @ USHL Fall Classic
Robbie used to be a one-dimensional, high-risk high-reward offensive defenseman but to his credit he has done a good job of buying into a more conservative game and he’s picking his spots better now. AHR Rating: BB

Alex Sakellaropoulos - Scouted on September 21-24, 2011 @ USHL Fall Classic
Alex has pro-potential with his size and natural athletic and technical ability. But, he’s too heavy in his butterfly and doesn’t battle hard enough to keep the puck out of the net. Doesn’t diagnose players early and he’s too slow in getting square to the puck. All of his goals against were weak and maybe he should play in the NAHL or NA3HL this year. AHR Rating: B

Brett Curran - Scouted on March 5, 2011 @ Muskegon v Chicago
2Another Scouts Notes: Brett took on Moran again. Both got a few good blasts in and Curran once again showed that he can hold his own. He continued to be physical throughout the game. Made a few nice first passes out of the zone. His feet continue to need help. AHR Rating: B
Scouted on February 18, 2011 @ Chicago v Youngstown
Curran was caught out of position multiple times and seemed to be lost anywhere near the crease. He was slow getting to the puck and gap control was not tight. AHR Rating: B
Scouted on February 5, 2011 @ Muskegon v Chicago
Brett dropped the gloves with Michael Moran and for the most part gave it to him hard. No hesitation shown and simply went for it and came out on top despite the size difference. Made some sharp passes to get the puck moving in the other direction. Stayed positionally sound and kept a hint of aggression in his game. Is a steady north and south skater that continues to show poor lateral movement. AHR Rating: BB

Re: Michigan Tech '11-'12 Season Thread I: Hope Springs Eternal

I have officially realized that the national polls are nothing more than a popularity contest. Tech was "ranked" 21st with a record of 4-0 and was bumped out of the Top-20 by:
Two Ivy league schools (Yale and Cornell) who have yet to play a game (Yale actually moved UP in the standings to 9th by not playing?!?)
Notre Dame with two losses and a 0.500 winning percentage
Miami with two losses and a 0.500 winning percentage
Univ of Maine with two losses and a 0.333 winning percentage
tUMD with THREE losses and a 0.250 winning percentage

Really? I know we've been down on our luck for the last couple years (decades) but throw these Huskies dogs a bone. I would be nice to get some props for at least a week or two.

Ryan J

I think the Huskies got a bigger bump in the voting polls than we deserved.....we WERE thrown a bone by being placed in the top half. I agree that many of the current top ten are overrated, but let's face it, most of the time, teams don't climb out of the basement in a single season. Although I definitely think we're capable of finishing in the top third, you can't blame the poll voters for being skeptical. They're still basing a good deal of the ratings on last season, which historically, is a strong predictor.

Curious has there been any further word (rumor) on the up coming WCCHA commissioner?

Since the CCHA teams are technically joining the WCHA, wouldn't Bruce McLeod still be the commissioner? Or did I miss something?

I'm pretty sure that's right. Although if the WCHA is looking for a new commish I wouldn't mid applying for the job. I'm pretty sure I can do better then the people in charge now.

You mean you might be able to keep more than 33% of the teams intact?

Tom Serratore has some nice things to say about Tech

And wow, aside from highlights of their games, Bemidji State's athletic department has their act together when it comes to video.

He's also pulling the standard brag up your opponent regardless of how good or bad they are; as well as throwing things out there - Tech did not lose alot of one goal games last year; they lost ONE game by one goal and the rest were by 2 or more (more often more). But most good coaches use this technique.

I was thinking the same thing. He must have missed the highlights on that last regular season series
