Michigan Tech 09-10 Season, Part III: "Why Don't You Have a Seat Over There...?"

Re: Michigan Tech 09-10 Season, Part III: "Why Don't You Have a Seat Over There...?"

FIRE THE TREADMILL!!!

Anyone notice that next to "he shoots just wide" Dirk's second most common line is "Tech looks dead tired out there...."

Curious, How does a team that prides itself on conditioning (or at least say they do) always be so "dead tired"

And it's not just this season. It has been happening for the past couple of seasons.

I was thinking that there were two reasons for this:

1. Penalties. When your best defensive players are spending half the game on the PK, they're going to be exhausted pretty quick.

2. When they can't play their fourth line because it's getting "eaten up" by opponents, they're forced to shorten the bench, which further increases ice time for our top two lines. Scratches are part of the reason for this (forces them to piece together new lines each week), and youth is another.

However, this kind of injury situation doesn't occur two years in a row without people questioning the conditioning program. It's like an opponent sneezes on one of our players and next thing we hear, he is out for at least two weeks or even done for the year. Are their knees and shoulders made out of glass? It's ridiculous.

I guess that would explain the weird message I got on AIM from Yager in the wee hours of the morning when I was sleeping... Yager and bb_dl: I might need details :p
Oh dear, I may know what this IM pertained to...
IMO, the two issues with the PK are:

1. We take far too many penalties in the first place, which leaves the units exhausted by the end of the first or second period.

2. I think we're starting to realize just how important guys like Schwarz, Angelow, Kitti, and Kinrade were to our PK the last couple of seasons, and they all graduated at the same time. That left us with a bunch of freshman/sophomores who've mostly seen few (if any) PK minutes, and a group of juniors/seniors who have, for the most part, only seen time on the secondary units.

I also agree with you that while Bangen is the one who should be taking the heat right now, Russell is in serious danger of losing his grip on this team if they have another year like last year. A team will only listen to their coach for so long when they are continuously being blown away by opponents. They start to lose faith in the systems, start playing as individuals instead of a team, and then everything goes to sh*t.

I sincerely hope that a weekend at home will help us get back on track.
.
As one of our team's prime optimists, I sincerely hope they pull something off next weekend, or else it's going to be unbearable to be around our prime pessimist. :(

Re: Michigan Tech 09-10 Season, Part III: "Why Don't You Have a Seat Over There...?"

You can tell yourself this now, but you'll get awfully tired of always giving up a late PP goal to the other team every year that would let them have the Victory. There's only so much of just being Happy to be here one can take. ;)

I think you'd have to be an arrogant pile of **** to actually take being incredibly successful year after year for granted

Re: Michigan Tech 09-10 Season, Part III: "Why Don't You Have a Seat Over There...?"

I was looking at Tech's hockey team history on this site (gives the teams win-loss through their history.) If things don't turn around in a big hurry, I hate to say it, but I think coach Russell's days will be numbered. The team has only had one winning season since he has taken over. It is clear this team lacks discipline. He seems to be a good guy, but as with any coach it all boils down to wins and losses. Two double digits winning seasons in 6+ years just doesn't cut it. Will Tech consistently contend for a league crown? No they won't. They should and could be similar to teams like UMD and SCSU. Look what Bemidji is doing, they join our league next year. I watched the game last night against Wisconsin last night and their announcers said the last time Tech hosted a playoff series was back in '92. For an area so rich in the history of hockey that stat is quite pathetic. If Michigan Tech decides to go in a different direction I hope they don't hire from within again. God I hope there is a John MacInnes clone out there somewhere. Just my thoughts.:)

He'll be around regardless, since there's no way we're finishing this season with any more than 10 wins.

I'm not going to form any further opinions on any member of the coaching staff until we see how the team performs back in Houghton this weekend against Minnesota.

We're all crushed about the outcome in Madison, and I think how they respond at home against the second-to-last team in the conference will go a long way towards forming my post-GLI/second half expectations and opinions.

Oh, I thought you were talking about JSR. Whoops. :o

Re: Michigan Tech 09-10 Season, Part III: "Why Don't You Have a Seat Over There...?"

I was shocked by the outcomes this weekend.

I hope the coaching staff is getting through to the team that it is important to show pride in wearing the jersey. Even with the injury bug, a lot of effort can overcome as lot and at least be competitive. After getting blown out, every other team in the WCHA comes back to the rink the next night and gets points. Historically, MTU gets blown out again. Why?

The focus now is on Minnesota and league points.
Then, warming up for the GLI with an intense effort against NMU.
Then, showing the alumni we can play some hockey still....with a determined effort at the GLI.....

All the players and coaches need to get it going for these next 5.
Focus!

NO arguments with #1 at all.

And can't disagree with #2. But if the fourth line is always getting "eaten up" then that leads to another question/problem that no one wants to deal with. A very touchy one at that.

So I won't bring it up until after the season is over with.

Here is to better luck this weekend against Minn.

Go Huskies

Along with the reasons stated, it's a relative lack of talent compared to the rest of the league. Tech does not have the horses to compete with the rest of the WCHA, causing them to work harder then the opposition just to keep up. They can't be as conditioned as their opponent, they have to be much better conditioned.

bring it up...a lack of depth...that will continue to be a problem for Tech until it strings together a few winning seasons to make MTU a good option for quality non/low scholarship players to create that depth...

We should all just become anti-Badger fans. Not because we necessarily dislike the Badgers, but because it is so much fun to harass them and their fans.

This weekend was probably one of the best road trips I have been on so far. Madison is a fun city, with lots of nice looking girls around, Ian's Pizza, State Street Brats, the KK, Cougars from Iowa, and much more we didn't have time to explore.

Lets just say its much better to be a Tech fan once you have turned 21.

That's why you recruit more people for the forums so there are always other minor suckers. Hence TCM posting now.

Oh, good point!
Hm, I'm going to need to get to work. I've still got another 2 years? after him.

You mean like PB?

I just threw up a little in my mouth.
Hell, I cringed. A LOT.
Gulk, there are some places you shouldn't go. And that, sir, is one of them.
