Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

I wish this was a two game series this weekend, but it'll still be nice seeing BC coming to Munn. Hopefully the PA announcer doesn't call them Boston College University like he did during the Ferris series.

Always a great idea to bring in non-hockey people to work at a hockey game.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

I heard someone say "As a college hockey coach, Tom Anastos is a great marketing guy."

And who doesn't love a "Joe College" at the JLA :).

We're praying some of those marketing skills will go to work to reel in some friggin recruits.

The thing is, the dude is the sports guy on the classic rock morning show, so he's heard of Boston College before... At least I'd hope.

I guess he fits with what appears to be MSU's plan to make it more like a minor league hockey game, but I long for the days of Jerry Marshall even if I was just a youngin' when he was around.

Conner Wood played really well without getting on the board - brought some good energy. Didn't see Tanner Sorenson on the ice, but did see a lot of Bondra. Power play started somewhat sleepy but continued to improve as weekend progressed. Nice to come home with a split.

I noticed that Wood was finally inserted into the lineup for the first time. 2 years ago, I liked his wheels against the U-18 team but that was the only time I had ever seen him. Perhaps he will become a regular.

Looks like Milan and Appleton (USHL teammates) will be here next Fall.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Well, that game went sort of how I expected except I was hoping that we would have been the team to score a couple of the trash goals.

I ought we skated well and competed hard but it felt like we were really fighting the puck tonight. Lots of bobbled pucks and flubbed passes. I think we were uncomfortable with BC's speed and they did a good job getting sticks in our passing lanes. It messed with our timing and it made things sloppy. Again, offense cannot overcome when the other team gets a couple unfortunate goals.

Attendance was pretty good. Mostly full tonight.

Did anybody feel like the band went silent for long stretches at a time? Pretty sure they played far less tonight.

I am bummed because I think that was a very winnable game against a premier program.

Edit: also, it really felt like there were way too many whistles tonight. Not a lot of flow in this game.

Tonight was disappointing because it seemed like we digressed back to last season for the first time. Even in the other losses this year we were at least handling the puck and looking like a college team, but for some reason tonight we went right back to last year's stick skills and powerplay where it's a relief if we can even complete pass. Probably the most annoying part of it is we still had a chance to win it despite all of BC's goals coming straight out of the Mighty Ducks "take out the trash scene." Which is not to discredit them, that's just getting in there on rebounds and getting to the puck first when crashing the net. At the same time, however, how many times have you seen a team save the puck directly on the goal line three times on the same play and still have a goal score? But Hildy wasn't on his game tonight either, a lot of easy rebounds were given up that he normally gets.

Like I said earlier, I wish it was a two game series, because I really think we could use tomorrow to try to fine-tune things. Oh well. At least the crowd was good tonight, and Big Ten play starts next week so that's somewhat exciting. Let's just hope we don't see more appearances from last year's team this season.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

For once, Hildebrand was not the best player in green and white. The last two goals he's probably having nightmares about. The second goal was ... inexplicable.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

It was disappointing, but he's bound to have bad games every once in awhile.

Two very winnable games this week against OSU. OSU has a football game against Indiana Saturday so it's a Thurs-Fri series. The good news: We finally have a TV game! Thursday will be on FSN+.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Speaking of goalies, it appears we are getting another one in 2016.

http://www.sbncollegehockey.com/col...51333/john-lethemon-commits-to-michigan-state.

Like Jake Hildebrand, Lethemon is playing backup on a USHL team. Hopefully like Hildebrand, that's no real indicator of how good he will be at the D-1 level. The guy ahead of him is playing in the World Jr. A Challenge, so he must be really good.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Weeeee! We going to get a sweep or just tease me again? Splits are kind of our thing.

Thought we played well for much of the game. Hildebrand was great. Things felt unnecessarily hairy towards the end. Don't let that carry over to tomorrow night.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

That was a pretty good road win. Berry was outstanding tonight and he made a lot of positive things happen (brilliant give to Darnell for his goal), we did spend a lot of time in our own zone, and maybe we didn't play well between the blue lines but once again had great goaltending and guys willing to get down and block. Hey #1 in B1G on Nov. 20 ... not bad :).

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Outright conference leaders, we're moving up in the world! I don't care if it's due to a scheduling quirk, I'm going to celebrate.

If we can win tomorrow, we can secure it until at least Saturday, and if UM/PSU don't have a sweep we could be alone in first place until December 5!

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

The OSU series sorta helped me confirm some thoughts I have about the team in general and some of the parts in particular.

Overall it's easier on the eyes as a fan than in the last few seasons, and we're seeing a few more of those goal-scorer-type goals than last season, where there were more of those scrappy kind where they keep whacking at it until it finds the net. We're still looking for more than one or two guys who are scoring threats every time they cross the blue line. Clone Matt Berry or even Ferrantino a few times and we'd have a few more goals from the scoring chances we ARE getting.

The defense is also significantly improved over last year. Although there are nights we're getting outworked along the boards and should find ways to spend more time in the opponent's D-zone, I see fewer give-aways and more support in moving the puck forward. Still blocking shots and that also helps.

The power play must improve. We can't spend the year at 10% and expect to end up with a winning record.

As far as individual expectations, it looks like the aforementioned Berry is on his way to a big senior season numbers wise. The guy can skate, handle the puck and has incredible instincts. Ferrantino and Maceachern give the team a lift too when they step on the ice, although the latter has a tendency to take on more resistance at times than he can overcome. But Mac's a great penalty killer up high and one of reason's our PK is one of the best.

Another senior I'm seeing playing great at times is Darnell, who while less the physical player he has been, is in noticeably better condition than he has been I think will be in our top 5 points guys when it's all said and done. His sharp-angle wrister on Thursday was a thing of beauty besides ;). Another guy who seems to be getting it together is DeBlouw, who will always give some good solid checks, but also is handling and distributing the puck patiently and maturely. He'll get on the board too.

Good-surprised: Connor Wood has a good burst and good wheels. Looks like he wants to score too ... I think he'll be an important player. Travis Walsh is gonna lead the team in shot blocks probably, but his puck-handling has improved too. He's also given MSU something they haven't had too much off: D-men who can score.

On the up-tick: Holland doesn't scare me as much with the puck behind his goal-line, which is a plus. Maybe it's taken awhile to heal but his stride is better and he's making better decisions. Along with Boyd, he's also getting off more shots, which can't be bad. It'll take Draeger a bit longer to be on top of things.

They are who I thought they were
I can certainly see the skill level of a Josh Jacobs, and it's refreshing to see a freshman D-man want to be a part of the offense. Ace at the right point on the power play too.

Sometimes spotted:
David Bondra, Ryan Keller, Dylan Pavelek (Fr)

Where are they?
Brock Krygier, Tanner Sorenson.
Sorenson's kind of an enigma to me. He's + to ++ when he's on the ice, but he's been a scratch for a long stretch (off-ice issues?). I thought Krygier was one of our better-skating, smart D'man last year (and as a Freshman), but I'm not sure he's seen much ice time this season.

Just to pick out and hopefully not too much picking ON particular players so far.

Ok... what the eff. Didn't watch, listen, or look at any stats of the game, but how do we lose to Princeton? Especially by more than one?

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Good job by State on Saturday - got a little shaky in the third after Princeton scored twice, but Spartans held on behind Hildebrand for the win

I didn't see the game - I was at work at the time - but Phinney had, apparently, the performance of his life in goal.

Nice to see the rebound on Saturday, but, yeah, it was a bummer to leave New Jersey with only one win. Business picks up this week. I'll be happy if we split with the Gophers - given our occasional glimmers of hope, I think we can do that.

Elsewhere, looking at the Spartan Fund website, the money gauge still hasn't been re-posted for the renovation project, so I can't imagine things are going too well. I'll probably chip in another $15 when I get paid Friday. If I keep at my current pace of $15 per month, we'll get there in about 11,000 years.
