Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

I don't really know what to expect out of this weekend. Ferris has lost three straight, as have we, and mirrored our scores exactly last week. I'd say our competition has been better, but we also lost to UMass who is definitely not good.

I'll be happy with two points this weekend, whether that comes from a split or two ties.

Would those be CCHA points? :D

Yes, they will be! Although by the end a split in the CCHA was three.

Are we supposed to hate Ferris? Because I don't. I was never big on Western or Northern, but Ferris and Lake State never sent me one way or the other. The only thing I dislike about them is that they took the bulldog off their away jersey.

I am...not happy. Not unhappy with the team's play, really. I thought we played a fine game. I don't know how this is going to be fixed.

There are numerous reasons we have had trouble scoring goals over the last number of years but man, do I feel like we deserved some tonight.

Zero. Again.

I don't know if there's ever been a more equal game with such a discrepancy in shots. We had about the same number of quality chances as them despite outshooting by ~20. I couldn't believe when I saw the actual numbers, it just didn't make sense compared to what I was seeing on the ice.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Yeah, about that. What on earth happened in the 2nd period, where MSU outshot Ferris 18-2??

Nothing much. We had the worst breakaway attempt of all time, another one where it got past Motte but tipped his skate and ended up rolling wide, and another where our guy whiffed on a semi-open net. Other than that it was all filler shots. Everyone I was with was astounded when we saw the SOG totals, because it just didn't seem like we dominated.

I'm looking at Motte's stats right now, how does a goalie rack up 29 penalty minutes in a single season?

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Hildebrand faced 16 shots last night. The problem was that he stopped only 15 of them.

Motte is really, really good, and as advertised, this group has only a couple goal scorers the other guys need to key on.

Bottom line is the shot clock doesn't matter if you don't execute. I think the Motte kid was comfortable the whole way - he was in his element.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

That was fun last night. Though I wouldn't say we beat Motte more than Ferris beat Motte. He was hung out to dry on at least two, if not three, of our goals. I'm still not sure why they didn't review the play near the end of the 1st when it looked like Ferrantino may have knocked it in, unless the ref said it was intent to whistle.

I'm also considering contacting the PA announcer. Late on 'full strength/now skating four men' type of announcements, and twice last night said "Michigan State's next home game will be against Boston College University." Seriously?

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Well, we made points. I was not able to go last night but it sounds like it was a good one.

I think we are better than previous years but if we can't put the puck in the net an extra time per game, it may not matter. We've already dug ourselves a hole by losing 4 straight.

Things can always heat up. We're clearly stingy on defense. Let's just plan on scoring more goals from now on.

State had a LOT of room to work last night. I think I saw on more than one occasion TJM's teammates skate up and apologize to him. That was not the same FSU we've seen the last couple years. The home team should take some credit though, that was as close to a complete game as MSU's played in a while.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

So Alaska-Fairbanks has been slapped with sanctions for lack of institutional control. They've vacating 63 wins, and their 2010 NCAA tournament appearance.

http://www.uscho.com/2014/11/05/aft...-feels-like-it-let-down-its-current-students/

Why is this important in this thread? Because if you take the Nanooks out of the PairWise and negate their presence in the 2009-10 season, the team that would have been in the tournament field in their place might have been...Michigan State.

http://www.uscho.com/2010/03/20/final-bracketology-march-20-2010/

Yes, the Spartans were tied with Ferris for the final spot. MSU lost and tied against Fairbanks while Ferris lost twice, but without the actual numbers available it's hard to tell how all the comparisons would have been affected. It's entirely possible that a team like Vermont would not have won some comparisons against either MSU or FSU.

So for all the apologists that are whining about punishing the current Fairbanks players for something their predecessors did, spare a thought for those players from other schools who were now denied their shot in the tournament by a team who was caught cheating.

It's weird winning games because of offense rather than defense playing perfectly. It's been awhile since that was the case, and it'll probably some time to get used to.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

Haaayyy a win on the road! Pretty sure it took us like 3 months to do that last year.

Nevertheless, good to see some offensive potency but I think we are going to need to find some better 3rd period energy to get the sweep. Don't like those SOG numbers but sometimes you gotta steal one.

Travis Walsh scored for the 2nd game in a row with his 2nd goal of his career. Quite a hot streak.

For what it's worth I've not seen MSU look as good at tape-to-tape passing as they did this weekend (with rare exceptions) in the current regime. They had UNH on their heels in the first period Friday, got a little tired throughout the game (the Olympic ice will do that) and relied on Hildy to save them. On Saturday, though the score doesn't show it, MSU had some good odd-man chances but their freshman goalie got on a roll, and UNH got the empty-net goal to seal it.

Conner Wood played really well without getting on the board - brought some good energy. Didn't see Tanner Sorenson on the ice, but did see a lot of Bondra. Power play started somewhat sleepy but continued to improve as weekend progressed. Nice to come home with a split.

The Durham campus is quite nice.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

I wish this was a two game series this weekend, but it'll still be nice seeing BC coming to Munn. Hopefully the PA announcer doesn't call them Boston College University like he did during the Ferris series.

:D We might have a psychologically wounded BC on Friday. Could get ugly no matter how you slash it.

Re: Michigan State's Eternal Optimist Thread, 2014-15 edition

BC fans may act as if their situation is as dire as it has been in decades but I have a feeling they will appear every bit as fast and skilled as they have always been billed to be.
I think we will need to play an excellent game and get a strong performance from Hildebrand in order to claw another game closer to that elusive .500 record.
