Michigan State 2009-2010

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

I checked the athletics website this morning, and the same block of 12 tickets in L and the same block of 30 in O that were available on Monday were still available.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Ugghh, we needed that win.

1st period I thought was one of the most entertaining periods of hockey of the year. Great flow and lots of back and forth action. I thought it boded well for the rest of the game.

2nd period was once again bogged down by excessive penalties. We began to look over matched at the same exact point as last night: about half way through the period. I felt ok about escaping with the tie due to the way we bounced back in the third last night so I was confident we would do it again.

3rd period was slowed to a crawl by whistles and TV timeouts as well as some irritating penalties. We never really picked up our play again and it was very frustrating. Their game winning goal was a huge bummer. I am still unsure of how that got through palmy. He wasn't even out of position or anything so that was such a drag.

OSU clearly played very well. I think they have a few forwards with speed that we have not seen very often this year and they toasted our defense continuously on the rush.

The shots were amazingly lopsided but part of that was due to OSU's propensity to throw any garbage they possibly could on net.

Overall, great first period but poor 2nd and 3rd. Officiating was garbage for the majority of the weekend as well.

Only gets harder from here.

This seems to be a league wide theme. The Mich/Ferris sat game was marred by excessive (ticky tack) penalties and timeouts. Funny thing is, when the officiating lets the teams play, they miss the critical penalties that usually lead to GWG's or similar.

I'd be in favor of upgrading the officiating over gimmick shootouts to make the games more interesting.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

This is the second week in a row I have to come on here Monday and hold my tounge. i know we are still in good shape in the NCAA and 2nd in the CCHA pictures, but I just cant help but beg for more.

We were outshot 47-19!! We were more than doubled up. I understand being outshot. I even understand being outshot by a wide margin. But since when does Jeff Petry wander out of position on 3 consecutive shifts? Since when does Cory Tropp pass the puch on a two on one without looking at the goal to see a goalie way out of position and as a result no shot is taken?!

We needed those 3 points like Charlie Weis needs a Jenny Craig gift card. We came out flat. We scored early on a tip that was a fortunate bounce. We were lucky that Palmissano played his resual stelllar game.

We have a huge weekend coming up and it is absolutely essential that we take at least 5 points. In the big picture of the NCAA's we need a sweep. I hope these boys can get up for this weekend because they were asleep this weekend.

end rant, part 2

Petry can be beat around the edge. He's got a great stick and top-notch instincts but he does not react well skating back.
And several of our key snipers have seemingly passed up multiple opportunities. I can remember Gazely walking into the low slot with ample room and OSU's goalie badly out of position and he decides to take it around the net. When you're getting outskated like we were Saturday, you've got to fire at will and hope for the ugly goals.

I agree. I think we have become too patient and become dependent on ticky-tacky passing that slowed us down the last couple of seasons. Soft hands and deliberate passes are essential to setting up good scoring chances...not slapping the puck around like it's a bouncy ball. Saturdays's puck movement reminded me of the scene in Mighty Ducks 2 when they used eggs to learn soft hands. The puck was bouncing all over and we were not smart with it in the neutral zone.

Until then we have egg on our faces? :D

I don't know who's in charge these days in Section V, but just once this Friday it would be interesting to hear:

PAA: Michigan full strength
SecV: And the new logo still sucks

... or words to that effect.

Just sayin'

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

I would rather have 49 shots with half of them being weak tosses at the net just fishing for rebounds then getting 19 shots that was a struggle enough to get any sticks on the puck near the crease...

All I'm saying is that for all the talk about using the Red Wings method of puck posession and execution which lead to a million goals in the first 3 months of the season, this month of January has been very frustrating to watch.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

About this weekend:

Michigan has looked good lately but lets face it the Spartans are about a line deeper than them. Michigan only has 2 guys this year with over 20 points while Michigan State has 5 guys over the mark. I am telling you guys Michigan State's depth is enough to at least earn them a split in this series but I think it'll be tough for either team to get the sweep because Hogan has been hot lately for the Wolverines and the series is always bitterly contested

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Going into the Michigan series, here's what I've been seeing concerning who's Hot and who's Not in the last month or so. Spartan fans, you may have thoughts on those I didn't mention.

↑ Sucharski - 4 point weekend vs. Ohio State and winning about 75% of his faceoffs. Did that one-game suspension help him?
↑ Perlini - the sophomore forward is skating with a purpose and has 9 points in the 10 games he's dressed. He's fairly replaced Walrod with his red-hot play.
↑ Krug - hard to believe this D-man has picked it up since his rookie-of-the-month December, but his game continues to round out in every aspect. And his penalties are declining - which for the most penalized guy on the team is a good thing. He may be our most intelligent puck-handler.
↑ Grant - after a slow middle-of-the-season, he's starting to heat up again. Definite CCHA rookie-of-the-year candidate and #2 in scoring in Div. 1.
↑ Jarosz - he's quietly(?) become very consistent. What a senior year he's having after being used sparingly the first 3, and he'd be a league leader if he could just hit that magical 33% play.
↑ Leveille - also not talked about much, but the sophomore #2 centerman is picking up 2-3 points a weekend since mid-December.

Holding steady -
Gazely - quick, crafty skater who is a scoring danger nearly every shift.
Nill - Much better sophomore campaign than last year.
Petry - long stick and excellent puck-mover who's averaging 2 assists every 3 games.
Crandell - you almost never see this guy make a mistake with the puck. Is tied with Krug for 2nd most assists among blueliners.
Palmisano - still making some highlight-reel saves and keeping MSU in games when we're outshot.
Forfar - excellent 3rd-line center who can win faceoffs and be physical.

↓ Tropp - perhaps a little frustration is beginning to show for a guy still having a monster junior year. Could be that teams are really beginning to lock down on him.
↓ Buttery - maybe not as much progress for a soph. defenseman as we'd hoped.
↓ Hayes - benefit of the doubt for a guy who's probably still recovering from a fairly nasty hit vs. LSSU. We really need this guy 100% for the toughness he brings.

Still waiting to see something from:
Grassi (D), Walrod (W) and Golembiewski (W)

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

I'm hopeful any visitors in maize will be invisible by their silence. ;)

Interesting story. Speaking of one former ZATM member, do you have any insight on Jay Sprague? We once were told he'd return after the first of the year.

Sprague/Sucharski/Lawrence was a great line in the 2007 Frozen Four. Sprague had a lot of promise and I have kind of had a soft spot for him along the way. It's too bad we haven't seen him back.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Tonight was the most memorable night at Munn Arena since raising the championship banner in 2007, and the most exciting game in about 10 years. Although there were a ton of penalties called, I thought it was very well called even the disallowed goals. Krug and Palmissano were so fired up, it was inspiring to see!!
