Michigan State 2009-2010

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Well a little bit ago i reflected back on last season by checking out the schdule/results. It actually seemed that our team was actually gelling and turning into a solid young squad a few weeks into the season. I remember being quite excited. The first few games were poor but then the second game against lowell, we turned it on and kept it there til OSU. You could even see it all in the stats. There were some bad memories though, like that Wisky game where we were outshot like 50 something to 12 or whatever, and it seemed like Mich. hung a minimum of 5 goals on us every game. Then dropping that game to the U18 team going into christmas break was proably one of the most empty feelings of the year. I am really eager to have those memories erased and for the team to shut up all of its critics. I checked out a practice for the first time today and i really like this team. I can't believe i have to wait like 18 hours for it to begin!

Getting 5 goals in a game - against no matter what college - is a nice change. I believe something we never had last season early on was three good periods. Example first game that counted was vs. UMass, where we got that 2-0 lead early and were roundly outshot the rest of the way - especially in the third.
So yes this weekend is yet another barometer of where we stand.

With Neil's piece this morning in the LSJ, the turnover picture is complete. From opening day roster last season 'til now -
Andrew Conboy - signed with Montreal
Ryan Turek - dismissed from team
Ben Warda - left school due to playing time concerns
Adam Henderson - back in Jrs. As Comley puts it, (paraphrased) "not a good fit at this school and not a good fit for the hockey team"

Getting 6 is even better.

Glad to see Tropp rack the first one. Glad to see Rowe and Gazely follow up... they've always been two of my favorites. Glad to see the freshmen come out hot. Glad to see that we're playing representative of the clean slate the new season represents.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Zach Josepher with 2G and 2A on defense.

Palmisano looked really solid

Tropp had a really pretty goal

Team looked real good

Andrew Rowe had a highlight-reel score too.

Speaking of highlight reels, wonder how long Golembiewski will be seeing his?

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Well, that was a disappointing game for the Knights. Coincidentally, the final score matched the 1966 NCAA Championship game score.

A few things I noticed:
- Your freshman class looks very "NCAA ready", not just on the scoresheet but they did a good job creating opportunities.
- On paper, MSU is not a much faster team than Clarkson but they got to the loose pucks tonight and when they didn't, many times the outmatched the Clarkson player trying to secure the puck. I don't know whether it was "bus legs" or lack of preparation on Clarkson's part, but it was ugly.
- Someone called Karpowich a Class A sieve. I couldn't disagree more. He held Clarkson in the game as long as they were actually in it. Unfortunately, he did let in 2 weak ones (3 and 4).
- The MSU goaltender looked very shaky and had Clarkson actually been able to put away some of their chances instead of fanning or shooting wide, it could have been a different game.

Not to take away from the MSU effort at all but that McInchak has got to go. He might as well have been wearing white and green out there. Even Wilkins made a call from across the ice when it was right in front of McInchak because it was so obvious. Clarkson's lone goal probably should have been blown dead, so to make sure it didn't happen again, he started blowing the whistle early. He then called an unfathomable "puck hit with a high stick" that actually deflected off the MSU goaltender's glove.

I loved the Munn Arena experience. There is a ton of hockey history in the place. I just hope that a win like this might start drawing crowds back because MSU is going to have an exciting product this year. I don't know if the defense and goaltending will hold out against top teams, but that offense is going to create some barnburners.

Hopefully our guys will show a bit better tonight.

What a wonderful game! It's been a looooong time since i've been able to be comfortable with a 3rd period lead.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Very promising start for MSU. I was especially pleased with the play of the freshman class (missing Grassi who I'm looking forward to seeing). Wow what a difference from last year's group. Now to see if they can put together back-to-back good games...

Good analysis FireKnight....I agree goaltending was not an issue with Clarkson....Your goaltender really kept you in the game during the first 5 minutes when MSU was completely dominating play and was very steady in net during the first period. I would disagree that MSU goaltending looked shaky....while not a Lerg, I thought he was ok. The only goal he gave up was covered and should have been blown dead.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

So, does anybody know why the heck we're starting at 5:05p tonight? We weren't bumped by anything, to my knowledge.

My two favorite moments were Crandell's bone-crunching hit in open ice 20 feet in front of Palmisano, and Leveille's beautiful feed for Gazley's one-timer from behind the net on PP in the 2nd period.

Thanks for the kind words about the game and the building.

I don't understand this statement too well though...

"Someone called Karpowich a Class A sieve. I couldn't disagree more. He held Clarkson in the game as long as they were actually in it. Unfortunately, he did let in 2 weak ones (3 and 4)."

The two weak ones that he let in were the ones that made it a 3 goal lead for the Spartans. In other words, he held them in the game until he didn't anymore (because of 2 soft goals). Thereby earning him the moniker sieve. I agree though... "Class A" might be a bit too much. Hopefully we verify that status tonight.

McInchsuk actually had one of his better games last night.

As for the crowds... I am sure it is as much the Lansing economy as it is the performance of the team.

A. Allen... No Everbody's. What's up with that??? Have you lodged a formal complaint?

Thanks for your thoughts. I am glad you had a positive experience at Munn and hopefully we continue to do well to attract people again. The last few years, the beginning of the year attendance is always pretty shakey but it's a bit worse this year due to last year's crime of a season. It tends to pick up quite a bit in the second half for some reason...

But Clarkson is a solid team. It certainly wasn't as lopsided as the score but we found ways to put it in, which i haven't seen in a year and a half. With that said, i fully expect tonights game to be much closer. I am gonna guess a 3-2 or 4-2 affair.

Well, the new Don Henley took about an hour trying to stuff that **** ice cream sandwich down his friggin' gullet.

Judging from last night, I doubt he could have played it anyway. :D

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

OK, take a breath everyone. Now we've shown we can win pretty and we can win ... well ... by a goal.

What a difference Sucharski makes when you need those faceoff wins late, eh? Love the power play with Krug and Petry - Buttery and Josepher will come around.

It's nice that 4 different freshmen netted their first goals this weekend! It's also nice that we come away with a win while these guys also experience what a revenge-minded forechecking team can do to you. Jarosz getting a win has to give the rest of these team sky-high confidence too.

Have to work on eliminating those turnovers at our own blue line. Could have turned into some devestating goals against us.

Off to Maine - whose program looks in disarray to say the least.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

Great weekend of hockey!!! There were a lot of great things this weekend. The biggest, IMO, is we found some guys to stand in front of the net. We've been missing that for awhile now. Second, the fellas are making decisions quicker and confident in that decision. Last year it seemed the guys had a tough time making up their mind and always second guessing. It's been a long time since I've been this excited about a team.

Oh absolutely they are making decisions faster - including knowing immediately when to get themselves in front of the crease. I also think there are some unsung activities out at the points. I see wingers near the circle actually going OFF the puck and toward the slot when the anticipate the Dman getting to the point to hold the puck in. That was evident tonight and is happening even-strength. When people do there jobs its a nice thing to watch.
