Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Christ, I must be seeing things because I thought there was a rather large argument on this thread concerning which players the NHL scouts were looking at when attending Merrimack games, whether scouts are looking at 22 year old freshmen, and huge lists of every possible example of older college players that made the NHL from some yahoo Merrimack fan that was frothing at the mouth.

I must be in some variation of the space time continuum.

All I'm saying is that even though those 22 year old freshman defenseman are not high end prospects does not mean they are not getting looks.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Merrimack does not have as many high end defensive prospects as BU. You are right, but for this level, I'd take Merrimack's defense over BU's. Same for as good as Da Costa is, I'd take Coyle over him at the next level. I'd rather have Da Costa for my college team.

Good points.

Look at Krog and Haydar in AHL. Top 2 on their team in scoring and one has had 1 nhl game in 2 years, other 0 in past 3....

A pal sent over this youtube clip and it is a UNH alum highlight reel. Amazing the difference between an NHL and a good AHL/great D 1 guy.

Dacosta is the real deal. maybe not the same style as Coyle but has a good chance to be as affective in his role.

I feel they get most of their 4-6 dmen from draft picks after major junuior runs out. Look at Buffalo, all ex draft picks, Biega for example with others. they give them a huge benefit of the doubt and bring them in first. An occasional sprinkle but i dont see 4/5 free agents out of that group. 22 year old freshmen are 22 year old freshmen for a reason. You mentioned Gilroy, he is an exception not a rule and was picked up after 4 years. Not a 22 year old freshmen and next day stalked by NHL guys.

Not many secrets out there and these kids at that age have been seen 1000 times

Here is the AHL clip I was talking about

The scouts are there to see the big names like Da Costa. They will take notes on other players that stand out to maybe sign to a tryout contract when they are done with school and see what they have when they show up to that... but if you take Da Costa or Cannata off that team, scouts are going to stop coming to the Mack games. And for the other guys, you REALLY have to stand out (like a Gilroy) to get their attention and get a shot at a FA contract.

I agree with both of you that the scouts are there to see 24 and 35. I just think that some of the outlandish comments HokyDad makes take away from his credibility as he is more knowledgeable than most on here. Some older freshman have made it to the next level and/or gotten looks as an FA. I just think that some of the MC d-men and Jesse Todd have the chance to play significant time in the AHL. Therefore, some NHL scouts would take a game or two in to see them. Just not as many, not as often as for 24 and 35.

"Nothing, unless you couple the fact that 2 out of the 3 are better than any D at MC"

That's fine, you think 2 BU dmen are better than anyone Merrimack has. For the sake of this argument, I won't even dispute that. That still doesn't mean that BU's defense is better than Merrimack's THIS season.

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

These guys are definitely getting looks but they are clearly not a priority when DaCosta is tearing it up. You're right on that a guy like Todd could definitely have a solid shot at the AHL

Maybe so- the teams look fairly even on D but you have to give the edge to the team who took the season series.

You are right about Clendening...he'll make it in the NHL...every NHL team needs at least 1 thug!!! LOL Kidding of course, although I'd like to see someone with his talent play a little less dirty...that hit on Cucci was pretty bad...and he had a couple other incidents during the game. Not sure if this was a one time thing as I haven't caught too many BU games this year, but from what I've seen, the kid has talent, but seems like a loose cannon/thug. JMHO.

He is a thug. That hit was completely unnecessary.

you need to peek out of the UVM thread once in a while;) , he's baaaaaaaack and lighting up the Mack thread!:D

Well he was gone for a month, just recently started re-posting. I may not have noticed, there has been some many ridiculous Ylae threads to provide fodder.

Hokeydad skating circles again ....

From today's Denverpioneers.com online chat with Denver coach George Gwozdecky:

[Comment From Roger : ]
Which non-WCHA team has most surprised you with its performance thus far?

[Comment From Coach Gwozdecky : ]
My vote for a Team of the Year and Coach of the Year right now would be Merrimack College and Coach Mark Dennehy.

Mack fans, when this guy posts on your thread , IMO it's a big compliment.............he's as good as it gets as is his team's program

Couldn't be more right. He's a class act and very knowledgable regarding all of college hockey and a long time insider of the DU program. Also, DU coach Gwozdecky is also highly respected and accomplished. Great to hear positive things from anyone outside the MC program and HE, but especially someone like Gwoz all the way out in Denver.

what the heck happened over there last night? i was watching the score updates online in disbelief but again the "no hockeyeast game is easy" line stands true

Re: Merrimack College 2010-2011: taking H.E. one chair-back seat at a time

Lowell was trapping big time. Now, I'm not one of those guys who discredits that tactic, It's pretty much the only one that works for the low level teams in HE playing against the more talented clubs (MC has been there...and not all that long ago).

That being said, we didn't adjust, couldnt get the puck into the zone. I think we missed Cucci and Bigos big time. I think Bigos would have opened some things up and gave us more room to work with - from what I've heard he's looking at a return next weekend against VT.

Didn't miss them against BU. Perhaps your team just didn't play with the same intensity as they do against the iron.
Imagine your team facing the opponents 'A' game every game. Would they be able to 'bring it' every night?
Great teams bring their game (or enough of it) to beat the teams they should. That's what separates the men from the boys.
I think MC is a very good team. I do question their ability to win on the road and get up for opponents that aren't one of the Big 4. I think they are capable of it, they just don't do it. When they can start playing every game the way they do gainst the big boys, they will have turned one of many corners needed to play at the tournament level.
