Re: Merrimack 2014-2015: Anyone?
Haven't had a chance recently, but here's my take on a season wrap up:
Started the season pretty well, but in retrospect, they were playing some pretty weak teams. Saw some promise in the series es against PC and ND, but after the beginning of the year, they reverted to the norm. To be honest, they got to play 2 more games that i expected in the playoffs, primarily (solely?) because of Tirronen.
MVP: Tirronen. Absolute no brainer. Perhaps no single player meant more to their team than Ras (BU is still loaded without the phenom). Turned in a couple of mind boggling performances (see UML game with 51 saves and 63 saves against NU in the playoffs) . Best of luck.
Most Improved: Brian Christie. Doubled his goals and improved his overall play. Hope that continues into this Sr. Season. Could also make a case for Hampus Gusstafson.
That was good: PK. Second in HE with 88.5% success rate
That was bad: Penalties!! Doing nothing to undo the "Merrihack" moniker. We love good, tough play, but there continues to be way too much unnecessary, knucklehead stuff.
That was good: Freshman class. Seney, Hennig, Tibbet all look like they have some offensive skill and speed. Biega looked composed and confident on D, and Kolquist was reasonable solid
That was bad: Senior class: Especially the forwards, Jardine and Gould posting a bagel for goals, and Singleton with only 1 (albeit a big one against NU). And BC fans complain about THEIR recruiting classes
That was good: D and goaltending were pretty good.
That was bad.: Frighteningly inept offense. 48th out of 59 in the country, and dead last in HE (1.73 goals per game). No finishing, and saw too many players who couldn't even take a pass (or make a pass at the right time). 3 goals all season in the 1st period in HE games. 3! They were playing from behind all the time. Hope the current freshman can improve on that next year.
So, Warriors will return 9 of their top 10 "scorers" (using that term loosely). Leblanc needs to step up and show what Ottawas saw in him to draft him. There have been glimpses, but he needs to bring it every night. D will lose Kolamatis who has been steady. Goaltending is a HUGE hole. Will Delia be able to step up? He performed well while Ras was out before the break, but is he your go-to guy? Don't see any goalies on their recruits list.
So Yuppie Scum and I will continue to follow them next year (maybe we can get Redman back in the fold!) and maybe find another fan or 2!. Best of luck to all the HE teams and their fans who get to continue on in the great tournament that is the "Frozen Four"!
