Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

They cannot afford to pass up that event at the Schott on the chance that OSU had a first round home series. Like I said the last time it happened, shoulda won more games and gotten a bye.

Thankfully, that will no longer be an issue as the Big Ten Hockey Tournament will involve all six teams playing at an NHL arena (Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, MN 2014/2016, Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, MI 2015/2017), so there will not be issues at campus sites. Maybe someday Nationwide Arena could bid on it and get it in Columbus.

Nationwide would be a great venue for the B1G tournament someday and everything a hockey fan could want with bars, hotels, fine & casual dining are all within an easy walk of it and if it were on the rotation someday as a host site it certainly could be another plus with recruiting.

I would also say I hope someday Nationwide Arena gets the Frozen Four. I think it would be a great venue for that as well, for all the reasons you mentioned.

Yes, and I have mentioned it for those reasons as a Frozen Four site someday on a different thread before here on forum.

Funny you say that, they did get the bye this year.

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

LOL, exactly, they finished 4th and got a bye, and still got kicked out of their own building!

Yup, the Schott melted the ice the Tuesday after the Michigan game for OHSAA wrestling, boys and girls basketball. I'd assume those events are planned and scheduled months, if not years ahead of time.

The three games at the Ice Rink were awesome, so electric and loud. Why Ferris State was given center ice section/seats I don't understand, unless required by CCHA because of the smaller venue. The visiting team doesn't get a center ice section in any away games that I have gone too.

Yes it was mandated by the CCHA. Since we couldn't put them behind their team's bench they made us put them directly across from it.
Even though it was an insult to be shuffled back there I must say as an old timer with the program it somehow seemed and felt right to be on the ice where we began with the CCHA playing our last ever CCHA home games.

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

You moved to a rink for 800 people and you still couldn't sell it out at one of the nights? And this is a BI6 program?

Very misleading, though I certainly don't blame someone from outside of Ohio State for not knowing the whole story.

The event was basically by invitation only. Season ticket holders were offered the option to attend; everyone else was told there absolutely were no tickets. In other words, the possibility of meaningful single game sales was intentionally killed. I'm not criticizing that; there simply weren't seats available for other constituencies.

Now, what about the non-sellout? Yeah, there were a handful of open seats. A handful. For whatever reason, the powers-that-be erred on the side of caution, apparently fearing the wrath of the Fire Marshall more than the wrath of say 50 fans who were needlessly closed out.

To complete the story, I should mention that I know of a couple of fans who ignored the dire warnings, came to the Ice Rink anyway, and gained admission. But most everyone else apparently took no for an answer.

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

This is the first I have heard that Wisconsin kicks their hockey team out of Kohl or that they have to practice somewhere else. In regard to your big picture, OSU's commitment might be on par with the attendance, but commitment to the sport should be on par with your opponents, shouldn't it, as opposed to basing it on attendance at the games? If your commitment to the sport is just based on attendance and not on par with opponents, don't you risk falling behind those opponents?

I agree that if you are going to pizz with the big boys you better start drinking like them.

B6 attendance last year:

Rodents 9950
UW 9521
M ST 5869
UM 5357
OSU 4004
PSU 1729

Yes. It's actually one of the Big Ten athletic departments that keeps the University of Minnesota's department afloat financially.

FAIL.

We are talking about hockey the greatest sport on the planet and not other pathetic sports.

That's close but not quite how it was. They did have to offer season ticket holders first option to buy and they also had to allot so many to our player's for their families, so many for Ferris and so many for the student body. Technically speaking they could have sold more seats than they had.
However the season ticket holder sales were weak and Ferris turned back in what they didn't sell the Monday before so there were several hundred seats available to the general public and it was indeed advertised for the Friday & Saturday games both in the Dispatch and on the radio but NOT for the Sunday games as there was no way of knowing ahead of time that there would be a Sunday game and it was too late for publication in the Dispatch by the time the game was over Saturday so people simply didn't know there were still about 200 seats available for Sunday unless they were on Ticketmaster's website and saw they were selling seats for Sunday's game as that's the only way you could buy them if you didn't already have them. They went up for sale about a half hour after the Saturday game ended.
All a moot point now that that setup for playoffs is gone for good.

I understand Why they did that. They wanted to make sure that people were not disappointed when they sold out of tickets so quickly.

Appreciate the additional details. As someone who follows the program pretty closely, I should have been aware of that late release of tickets. But my own negligence notwithstanding, if people like me didn't get the memo, what chance did the the casual fan have of hearing the news?

In fairness, it should be mentioned that the two specific fans I spoke with came down from Northern Ohio for the series. So for those guys, the notice in the Dispatch wouldn't have done much good...

It should also be stressed that the ticket staffers found themselves in a very difficult position, particularly with regard to the possible Sunday game. But geez. If hopeful fans telephone in to inquire about tickets, and the response is nothing available/no chance, is it really a shocker that most will find something else to do? If you want people to triple-check with the Dispatch,Ticketmaster or anyone else, you've got to tell them to do so!!

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

Couldn't agree more PGB.
The last time we hosted in the old rink, tickets went on sale for the Sunday game right after the Saturday game in the St.John Arena ticket office but that was prior to OSU's arrangement with Ticketmaster and so that didn't happen this year.
Also when you do call the ticket office it's hard to get accurate info sometimes as they hire students to work the phones and windows and it just seems to me they rotate in and out of that job an awful lot so it's hard to get an experienced person to help you.
When asked after Saturday's game, even a number of event staff on hand couldn't answer the question about ticket sales for Sunday's game!
I don't recall if OSU had the info up on their website but I don't think so that there was any advance info for how and where for ticket sales if a 3rd game was required and that's just wrong on their part. They could have at least got it back out on the radio but to sell just 200 seats they probably thought it was a waste of money.
I will say OSU's marketing people put out much better effort this past year in getting group sales for games to churches and cub scouts and the like but still lacked in reaching the average Joe.
A lot of people listen to 610AM and QFM96 here in central Ohio but their sports personnel pretty much NEVER mentioned OSU hockey on what teams are hosting on a particular weekend and OSU could certainly pay them to get the word out. And how about getting the sports broadcasters of the local TV stations pushing the games during their segments of the 6:00 & 11:00 o'clock broadcasts?
I don't think it will take a tremendous amount of effort on OSU's part to promote the team better than they have, they just have to make the effort!
