Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

You would guess that Gwoz is at the top of their list of candidates.

Good riddance to Osiecki. I have maintained since he was first hired and he immediately released players and continued to release players and not honor previous commitments that he would not be a good head coach for OSU. The way that he treated his team was not conducive to gaining their respect or the getting the best out of them.
Some of you have mentioned in one of these threads that he disrespected the players, traditions, etc. I don't know if it was so much disrespect as it was for his disdain for the players, the media, traditions of OSU hockey or his arrogance.
His narcissism got in the way. We've lost good players, we've lost recruits to other schools as the reputation of the Head Coach at Ohio State made it's way around the hockey world. It's a small world.
I said about a month ago on another thread that I thought he'd be gone as soon as something better came along.
I was half right. He's gone.
There are plenty of great coaches out there that could step into OSU and develop the program in a positive manner.

I get that you are not an Oz fan. You made that clear from day one. I sincerely hope you are right on that last statement. Smith and Schneider better have someone lined up before we lose what was shaping up to be a great recruiting class.

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

I just hope that Ohio State's athletic department isn't stupid enough to throw the program into chaos by a blindsided firing without SOMETHING already in the works behind the scenes.
If OSU has secretly negotiated the hiring of a new coach I think we'll hear about it mid week at the latest.

If the latter is not the case here, Smith and Schneider should both be fired immediately.

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

FHe too knows what it is like to have commitment and unrivaled support placed into hockey by an athletic department.

I didn't know he coached @ Minnesota prior to OSU. ;) :eek:Oz would have had no idea what "unrivaled support" was from an Athletic Dept. from his time at UW. The only ice Barry "I'm not a hockey guy" Alvarez knows about is the ice in his diet coke. UW's support seems to be better than OSU's but, it's far from "unrivaled".

I hear ya. You hit the nail on the head.

I was very excited when I first heard the news of Coach OZ coming here to lift the team to a higher level. He brought in two great assistant Coaches that were AWESOME & on fire for the program. They both had great respect for the program on & off the ice. After his first year I knew the program was in trouble the way he carried himself on & off the ice. No respect at all to others as he thought he was a HOCKEY GOD.

The fact that there is a job posting on OSU's website (no lie, just looked it up) for a head coach for hockey tells me that Smith and Schneider blindside-fired Osiecki and they have no plan whatsoever. Gonna be a loooong season next season, and probably a couple more years after that by the time we dig ourselves out from this. It's almost like Smith and Schneider are trying to bury the program so they can drop it. What a shame.

I'll be the first to slam GS for a lot, but I think the formal posting is state law for any position at a public university in Ohio.

Odds are that state law requires that all jobs be publicly posted to hire an outside person to the position.

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

It seems odd. Yesterday OSU said look for an announcement on Tuesday. Today's announcement was that the assistant coach is the "interim head coach". If they had someone lined up, it would have been announced sometime this week and you wouldn't put out a presser naming an interim coach.

Let's hope our recruits for next season stay committed, unlike our athletic department.

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

If they do have something in the works I'd think they'd announce before the week is over. If they're still working out details the whole thing could blow up in their face.
I know of MANY reason Smith & Schneider should be fired and it actually has NOTHING to do with hockey!

Everyone is assuming this firing of Osiecki was a premeditated move....what if it wasn't?????

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

Just send Steve Rohlik back to us and nobody gets hurt... :D

I hope they give Coach Rohlik a shot at the Head Coaching job. I have met the guy at the rink & he's a great guy. Goalie Coach Joe Exiter is also a great guy for the program. Met him also. Both of these Coaches work good with the staff & players & are on FIRE for this program. GO BUCKS GO.

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

Whoever ends up coaching this program, I hope they can salvage what already appears to be a wavering recruiting class. They will also need to convince the guys already in the room to stay. I agree with GB Puck Fan, whether it was premeditated or not, it was extremely shortsighted to fire a coach with no plan in place, and the fact that they promoted an assistant from the same regime is a clear indication that they had no plan whatsoever. Foolish move by the athletic department to say the least. We may end up stuck with Rohlik because I am not sure a big time coach will want to come into a program that gets minimal support/committment from the athletic department.

Schools who undergo coaching change normally keep the first assistant on as the interim head coach to run the program and keep in contact with recruits. Someone who is certified by the NCAA to interact with players and recruits has to stay in charge or the whole program can descend into chaos and anarchy.

Just curious, is it also good riddance to players like Zac Dalpe and others who left early and didn't honor their commitments? Or players who committed the Ohio State under Johnny but decommitted once he was fired? If you inherit players who don't fit your system, is it better to bury them on the bench or in the stands or to release them and give them a chance to play elsewhere?

If they retain Rohlik he would most likely try and keep and use the recruits as he probably had a hand in their recruitment.
I really hope Coach Exter stays! Joe is a GREAT guy and really knows his stuff as goaltending coach and did a fantastic job with Brady Hjelle's development. His departure would turn an open wound into uncontrolled bleeding.
