Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

I didn't know he coached @ Minnesota prior to OSU. ;) :eek:Oz would have had no idea what "unrivaled support" was from an Athletic Dept. from his time at UW. The only ice Barry "I'm not a hockey guy" Alvarez knows about is the ice in his diet coke. UW's support seems to be better than OSU's but, it's far from "unrivaled".

Haha, "unrivaled support". Take the support Wisconsin gives to their hockey program, divide by 100, and you will have the amount of support OSU provides for their hockey program. :D

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

If they retain Rohlik he would most likely try and keep and use the recruits as he probably had a hand in their recruitment.
I really hope Coach Exter stays! Joe is a GREAT guy and really knows his stuff as goaltending coach and did a fantastic job with Brady Hjelle's development. His departure would turn an open wound into uncontrolled bleeding.

I agree. I know if Rohlik gets the head Coaching job , Exter will be here to stay. If they hire a newbie then Rohlik & Exter might both be sent down the road by the new Coaching staff.

Absolutely. I'm surprised Rohlik isn't a candidate at Anchorage. Very good coach and recruiter.

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

Just curious, is it also good riddance to players like Zac Dalpe and others who left early and didn't honor their commitments? Or players who committed the Ohio State under Johnny but decommitted once he was fired? If you inherit players who don't fit your system, is it better to bury them on the bench or in the stands or to release them and give them a chance to play elsewhere?

That's the whole point of the program, to develop players in an effort to win an NCAA Championship AND so they have the opportunity to get to the next level. If your program continuosly develops players that draws the attention of the NHL, because of superior coaching and recruiting, where do you think these recruits will want to go and play???? I know that there are a few of you that believe OSU is not in the business of developing players for the NHL...but give your head a shake...
The players and their families are ALL after that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. They are all Amateurs until someone starts to pay them. When the big check gets offered to them, regardless of their time in school, what do you think they will do???

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

We definately need Joe Exter to stick around. The work that he did with Hjelle last summer in preparation for the season is nothing short of outstanding.

I hope they give Coach Rohlik a shot at the Head Coaching job. I have met the guy at the rink & he's a great guy. Goalie Coach Joe Exiter is also a great guy for the program. Met him also. Both of these Coaches work good with the staff & players & are on FIRE for this program. GO BUCKS GO.

How long before Penn State is better than tOSU at hockey?

What do you mean? Penn State is already undefeated against OSU! Realistically though...2-3 years. Penn State is going to do serious damage. The rink is incredible, great staff, positive momentum already coming out of first year. PSU is going to become a juggernaut.

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

Penn State should do very well with the new arena, and Guy Gadowsky at the helm

With their new arena and legitimate committment to hockey, they may end up passing us up almost instantly if the athletic department doesn't get a decent coach in here and start giving hockey the support it needs to succeed.

So what exactly are the support issues?

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

They lost to a lot of teams who get a lot less support.

Let's also not forget in the majority of games that were lost were lost on defense with no support in front of Hjelle or a total collapse of offense in front of the net. Constant switching of lines from week to week provided no continuity. Was their even a Captain named?

There's a lot of blame to go around as to who we lost to and why we lost that no amount of a new arena or administrative support will ever correct.

Re: Mark Osiecki Out at Ohio State

I could give you a long list of issues for this but the main issue is the OSU mens hockey program needs a hockey-only facility. The current facility (Value City Arena) is too big and the atmosphere for a home game is terrible, to put it mildly. Most of the time, our team gets kicked out of their arena, anyway. They don't get to practice there most of the time due to other events going on and this past season, our playoff series vs Ferris State was moved to the OSU Ice Arena (capacity 800) so that VCA could be used for HS girls basketball. And that isn't the first time that has happened where we have kicked our mens hockey team out of their own building for HS sports. I could go on but that is the main thing that is killing the program. The atmosphere at VCA hurts recruiting, big time. No major recruit wants to play in an atmosphere like that where the arena is only 25% full and the entire upper deck is curtained off. The athletic department has been aware of this for years but bascially continues to ignore hockey.

Does OSU have a practice rink? IMO, having one would help the program.

Wisconsin gets kicked out of the KC annually for the boys state bb tourney, and until last year the girls state bb tourney as well, so that's not a OSU specific problem. Until this year UW didn't have an on campus practice rink either, the players had to drive to the Dane Cnty Coliseum on scooters to practice. In the big picture it sounds like OSU's commitment to hockey is on par with the attendance. I love the fans' passion and commitment, but it's a very small fanbase. I would suspect if OSU played in a small 4000 seat rink, there would be a cry for a larger rink..."if only we had a larger rink, attendence would go up a ton", just surmising....

LOL, if you count the OSU Ice Rink as the practice rink, then yes, they have a practice rink. In fact they ended up playing their playoff series vs Ferris State in the "practice rink" because it was more important that we hold HS girls basketball in Value City Arena. LOL, another example of that great support the athletic department gives the hockey program! :D

This is the first I have heard that Wisconsin kicks their hockey team out of Kohl or that they have to practice somewhere else. In regard to your big picture, OSU's commitment might be on par with the attendance, but commitment to the sport should be on par with your opponents, shouldn't it, as opposed to basing it on attendance at the games? If your commitment to the sport is just based on attendance and not on par with opponents, don't you risk falling behind those opponents?

They cannot afford to pass up that event at the Schott on the chance that OSU had a first round home series. Like I said the last time it happened, shoulda won more games and gotten a bye.
