March Madness 2012

Re: March Madness 2012

UNC Asheville got robbed. At least 4 points should be taken away from Syracuse. Two on the phantom lane violation, and another two on apparently being unable to see a ball clearly go off Syracuse when no UNCA player was even close to it.

Edit: And another one for a missed goaltending in the first half. There's six points.

Re: March Madness 2012

The lane violation call was legit. A player who was not on the lane when the FT was taken came inside the three point line and/or in front of the foul line extended before the ball hit the rim, which is allowed in the NBA but not in college.

(Also: the out of bounds off of Syracuse is hypothesized as one of "those" calls where the officials don't want to call a foul, but they also don't want the other team to benefit from marginally illegal conduct, so the make the "incorrect" out-of-bounds call.)

This is all second-hand info, I followed the game but didn't watch it.

Re: March Madness 2012

Turns out the lane violation was right, but you don't use one of those "make-up" wrong calls in the situation of the out of bounds call.

Good to see UNCA coach Eddie Beidenbach not backing down.
First comments: "I thought there was a cooling-off period. There's not enough time to cool off after this one."
When asked if they should keep officiating crews together, Beidenbach: "I think they should always keep the good ones together."
Then he reiterated "When is the cooling-off period? August?"
My favorite is: "Syracuse is better than Asheville. Tonight, Asheville was better than Syracuse."

And of course Jim Boeheim, upon hearing that last quote responds "That's what they make scoreboards for."
And when asked if luck had a part to do with it: "I don't think luck had anything to do with this game. And I think the better team won."

Good job Jim, way to trash talk that 16 seed that you needed help from the refs to beat.

Re: March Madness 2012

I still wonder why Fab Melo was ineligible in December, eligible for the first ten weeks of 2012, and then ineligible again for the tournament.

Always has been a db. There's a reason why there's a "Boeheim exception" in ND circles to the precept of rooting for conference-mates in OOC play.

Re: March Madness 2012

Only about one good game in the night series.

EDIT: Make it two good games.

I'm gonna end 14/16 on the day, Montana and Long Beach were my losses. Long Beach is out of the Sweet 16 for me.

Out of four brackets, I've only lost two Sweet 16 teams, both from the same bracket.

I'm sure it'll be downhill from here.

Re: March Madness 2012

14/16, I only missed Murray St. and Gonzaga and haven't lost any Sweet 16 picks yet. But, I'm not any kind of confident about any of my picks past the first round.

Also, thank you to WeWantMore for posting the WSJ link. I went almost exclusively by my blindfold picks.

Re: March Madness 2012

14/16. I originally picked VCU but changed my mind at the last second. I also missed Colorado (turns out I picked all favorites yesterday - but not today).

Re: March Madness 2012

15/16 yesterday, missed out on Colorado. Rebels almost made that miraculous comeback as well.

I have VCU beating Indiana tomorrow FWIW.

Re: March Madness 2012

I should remember to do a final review of my brackets next time - just realized I accidentally picked Belmont. If I end up losing by a couple points, I'm going to be ****ed. :p

Re: March Madness 2012

So here's the latest officiating controversy from FSU-St. Bonaventure:
http://deadspin.com/5894076/

I honestly didn't know this was a violation. My thinking went along the lines of... St. Bona made the basket, so the FSU player can run the baseline (or even switch inbounders), so is the mere act of stepping over the line a violation, or is it okay so long as he's back behind it when the ball gets thrown in? From the reaction, I'm guessing that's not accurate?

What Norfolk State has done to my bracket.
