Two men whom the New York Post labeled as "Bag Men" in a front-page photo shortly after April's fatal Boston Marathon bomb attack have sued the newspaper for libel.
The Post reported three days after the bombing that federal investigators were seeking the pair, 16-year-old Salaheddin Barhoum and 24-year-old Yassine Zaimi. The story ran just hours before the FBI released photos of the actual suspects they were pursuing.
The lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, names the Post and five of its journalists, and seeks unspecified monetary damages. Post officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Barhoum and Zaimi, both avid runners, had gone to watch the finish of the April 15 marathon, which attracts thousands of spectators to downtown Boston. They left shortly after the winners crossed the finish line and about two hours before a pair of homemade pressure-cooker bombs exploded, killing three people and injuring more than 260.

The Post will pay off their lawyer and the suit will disappear. In other words, there will be an out-of-court settlement in which 40% of the money will go to their atttorney and they'll each get 30% of the total. The Post will claim "technically speaking, our story was accurate" in that police did want to interview the two (which occurred), and there will be a confidentiality agreement as part of the settlement.
I'm a little surprised that it took this long for the suit to be filed in the first place. It's been a little more than 7 weeks. I guess they needed that time to interview all the attorneys who reached out to them to decide which one would represent them.

Hey for a Murdoch owned outfit that's not too bad. I mean, its not like they hacked a dead girl's cell phone and erased a few messages thus giving her parents false hope that she was still alive or anything like that...
I wonder if the release today of police photos showing Fratricide as a sniveling coward is in any way a response to the picture Rolling Stone used on its cover??
Massachusetts State Police tactical photographer Sgt. Sean Murphy sent the gripping images to Boston magazine to protest what he saw as the “glamorizing” of Tsarnaev on the cover of this week’s Rolling Stone.
“What Rolling Stone did was wrong. This guy is evil. This is the real Boston bomber — not someone fluffed and buffed for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine,” Murphy told Boston magazine.
I don't have a problem with Rolling Stone writing the article.
I don't have a problem with them putting him on the cover.
I do think that the outrage is simply because of the picture that they chose. The picture makes him look like a playboy, it makes him look like a rockstar. That is why people are angered, and I really don't blame them. If they would have had a cover with 2 pictures of him, one of them being the picture they did use and another of him during the attack or after he was apprehended, then I think there isn't any outrage.

There is a difference between newspapers and magazines. The picture used goes with the article. This is front page news in a newspaper (since when do newspapers have a cover?), but will be buried pages in in a magazine. Use the picture on the title page of the magazine article, but not on the magazine cover itself. There was an identical picture of the guy used on the cover of a newspaper back in May and no one said anything about it. It's getting attention because it's Rolling Stone. My twitter feed consists mostly of New England people and they are p!$$ed about the picture. Most of them think the story itself is garbage too.

This is how I feel about it. Could they have made him look anymore doe-eyed or pretty? Reminds me superficially of 70s photos similar to this one of Cat Stevens:

There are ways to tell a story with imagery and photos and even if they were going for the monster within, it would have been executed better the way that you mention with 2 photos next to each other or even a photoshopped composite ala Two-face from Batman where you have each side, pretty and monster.
RS accomplished their goal most likely. I mean, when's the last time the masses were even aware of Rolling Stone?

Who cares what they put on the cover?

Whoa, I'm sorry, I thought this thread was about the bombing, not guys with big schlongs.
Really, next time name the thread something less similar to other threads.
