Maine @ UNH 10/24: Will Whitehead finally pop?

Re: Maine @ UNH 10/24: Will Whitehead finally pop?

Nah, TIMMAY and Blake James have become good golfing buddies over the past 2 years. :D
Thats why both have to be gone after the season....the point is DON'T offer Blake James a contract and let him go...with Whitehead...he will need to be bought out by private money....then and only then can the re-building begin....while were at it...it's kind of Hat Trick @ UMaine......Kennedy doesn't want to be at Maine...{Kansas Dreaming}..James doesn't want to be at Maine..{Florida Dreaming} and Whitehead shouldn't be at Maine{Please resign...take a buy-out...but just LEAVE}

Re: Maine @ UNH 10/24: Will Whitehead finally pop?

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

Well, I am just learning that the A.D. and the coach intentionally (or from total incompetance) did this to themselves.

I was somehow under the impression that Standbrook just got tired of doing it and retired, not that anybody would be as numb as to push him out.

Are you kidding? Grant was ageless. He had at least another 25 years of recruiting in him. Why would he want to retire?

Re: Maine @ UNH 10/24: Will Whitehead finally pop?

Got to agree w/ Priceless here.

What was Maine supposed to do - send Standbrook out on scouting trips to Saskatchewan into his 90s?

Don't get me wrong, Standbrook is/was a key cog in Maine's rise to prominence. But none of us last forever. And lots of other programs have managed to be competitive over the last 15-20 years. Whether he was pushed out or left of his own accord is almost immaterial at this point.

Re: Maine @ UNH 10/24: Will Whitehead finally pop?

I seem to recall Maine fans talking about having young players with potential over the past couple of years. What happened with that? Are they still progressing as projected? Were they overrated? Did they leave early? (Was I imagining all of that?)

I can understand having a couple of down years as the younger players gain their footing, but eventually those players mature/develop, and a good (or at least competitive team emerges). Does anyone see this happening with Maine this year?

Let me get this straight,

unh = goatee

Miane = ICU

?

C'mon. Purcell, Sweetland and Bishop all left early to turn pro. If they'd stuck around, there'd be at least another national championship trophy in the case. ;)

That's what TIMMAY will tell you anyway.

This business about Whitehead and Standbrook? Regardless of what you guys think of Timmy, you have to agree that any coach worth his salt, one who has already coached a D1 team, and in Hockey East, wants to make his own mark. Put yourself in his shoes (difficult I know). When he came in, he was following in the footsteps of an individual who was not only a legend, but was snuffed out in the prime of his coaching career. Without his illness, I am sure Shawn would be there today, agree? So Whitehead gets the job, he has to deal with the legacy of Walsh, he gets little or no credit when his team makes the FF (Shawn's guys, Shawn's legacy, Standbrook's recruits). After awhile I am sure he's had enough of it and decides to go his own way which means, in part, getting rid of the most prominent individual from the Walsh years. Now, I will agree that the results over the past couple of years have not been good. And it sure looks like Whitehead is not up to the task. But my guess is that he decided to hell with it and try to put his own stamp on the program. Hasn't worked out but you can't blame him for trying.

At this point Maine needs one of their alumni to come back and rejuvenate the team. It's going on 20 years now (hard to believe), and the circumstances were a lot different, but there is no question in my mind that UNH hockey was rejuvenated when Umile took over. He had the passion for the program, the passion for the school, and he was able to transfer it to his recruits. To me it is not much of a surprise that the schools that have won the most consistently in the last 20 years are those (save Walsh's Black Bears) where the coach is an alum. Of course, it has to be the right alum (think Cedorchuck before York at BC), but it does make a big difference.

As for the game, I always look forward to it. UNH is not much defensively yet, Foster has been just okay, so if Nyquist and a couple of other guys can do their thing, they might make a game of it. UNH 5, Maine 3.

It was a serious question. It was two years ago, when Sweetland was there. He was one of the names tossed around, but not the only one. I don't pay as close attention to the rest of Hockey East as I used to, so I'm not sure if that was wishful thinking on the part of some Maine fans, or if players left/didn't pan out (or if the Maine fans are just keeping their expectations low right now ;) ).

ICU? Did he fall down some stairs, then stumble out into the road and get hit by a truck? ;) :p

Maine is a stepping stone for Presidents, Athletic Directors, and coaches other than hockey. Hopefully someone is stupid enough to take Blake.

.

have you ever met the man?
do you have any idea what kind of shape he is in and whether he sleeps more than 4 hours a night?

Yes, and he's in ungodly shape. Have you ever seen him without his shirt? The guy is ripped. He could outlift half the team in the weight room.

His sleeping patterns never came up for some reason, but I assume he sleeps pretty well if he wants to.

Having said that, do you want someone who is 80 hitting the road and recruiting for the school? 90? Does he EVER get to retire and spend time with his family, or should he work for the university until he keels over? Maybe we could reanimate him and his corpse can hit the recruiting trail. Then he could coach the team next to Zombie Shawn Walsh.

As a UNH fan, I have an outside view.

If he left of his own accord because he wanted to do something else, then that is great for him bummer for Maine.

If he was pushed out because the A.D. and Coach wanted to go another direction for whatever ill concieved reason, then they are idots and a bummer for fans Maine.

Re: Maine @ UNH 10/24: Will Whitehead finally pop?

Standbook is College Hockey...a dedicated man...and when he did his job he did it because he enjoyed it and was the best at it....when he step down to be a volunteer coach he was the same man,dedicated...loved the game and would do anything to make UMaine Hockey the best...even if it was with..{R.I.P.}..Walsh or with Whitehead behind the bench....and if a new man would come in place say next season{Lets HOPE}...don't bet that he wouldn't be there to help out IF ASKED...and do it for the good of UM Hockey........not everone needs to retire and start rocking the chair....they can do anything if they are up to the task...and that would Mr. Standbrook.
