Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

We thought Maine hockey was back after they gave BC a run for their money in the 2010 HE championship game only to be let down the next season.

You didn't think Maine was fun to watch last season? Frustrating, sure . . . but they played exciting hockey. Four guys averaging a point per game. Five if you include Dee, who was right there. Goaltending was a huge mess. That was the real problem.

This year is basically like last year, but with goaltending upraded from bad to average.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

That's the thing about being a 3/4 seed. No rest for the weary.

I'll say this - as good as BC is, a rematch against them in Worcester seems more doable than playing Minnesota in St. Paul in round 1. Provided Abbott is a go. If not, all bets are off.

I'd rather play anyone than BC. We got a terrible brackett, and we can't even watch the game live on TV. Its streaming only on ESPN3??? That really is frustrating.

Ridiculous. ESPN squatted down and took a leak on college hockey this year.

Don't know much about UMD other than defending Nat'l Champs which makes them battle tested, Maine not so much. Tough draw, like to see us win one game in Worcestor anyway. The problem with 5 years of futility is no one knows what its like to be on the nat'l stage, I think that comes back to haunt Maine. If Abbott isn't close to 100% this is a one and done tourney for Maine.
Also no TV, what a joke ESPN is

The one thing I would say that if its anything like what they did with the Maine football playoff game, ESPN3 had a very watchable stream, especially with a descent computer on a large hdtv.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Fine. And how many BU and BC fans live within 2 hours of Boston? The Maine fans outnumber the BU and BC fans every year, and I'm a BU fan (and disgusted). So why ARE you belittling the Maine fans? At least they show up...

I'm not......and I stated that!......dummy.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Well a few observations from the Garden last night. 1st congrats to BC. After seeing them live in person it's easy to see why they are the #1 team in the country. Very talented and very deep. I guess that's why I'm not all up in arms about losing last night. dissapointed yes, surprised....not at all.
2nd, huge props to Sully. That kid kept that game from being 15-1. He's has come so far this year and he got hung out to dry so many times last night and came up huge. The D played scared last night and it showed. Sully wasn't scared and played like it. Great job.
3rd, I'm not a player basher but I have to say Heggarty is brutal. Both nights I thought he was awful. I think it was in the 1st period last night he got deeked so bad I thought his skates were going to come off. All I'm gonna say about that.
Next, no Abbott. You could really see how out of sync the team was last night. Say what you will, not having him out there really affected the team in alot of ways. There was no rhythm, no confidence, no flow and little energy. BC was able to focus on Diamond and Flynn so it didn't matter how beautifully Mangene skated, when he got the puck into the zone it was all Maroon & Gold. BC was never out of position, never left an open lane and was masterful on the PK.

Anyway, just my thoughts. It was a fun weekend. Nice to be back in the Garden and sharing more memories with my son. Although it was deja vue all over again from 2 years ago. Now on to the most brutal draw in the NCAA's I think they've ever had. I sure hope Spence is better!!

One thing about Sullivan though.......HE NEEDS TO LEARN TO FIND AND COVER THE D*MN PUCK ONCE HE MAKES THE INITIAL SAVE!

Heggarty was pathetic. Thank god that he will finally graduate.

Diamond is a stud.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Really? I have to explain this?

I guess I can see the confusion. In that post, "money" was shorthand for institutional resources more generally -- including more or less permanent resources like geography. Resources are also about having the budget to hire the best staff possible, construct the most attractive facilities, etc. All of those things influence long-term competitiveness.

There. If *that* doesn't make sense, I don't know what to say. Maybe call the bursar's office @ Chestnut Hill and ask for a refund?;)

So you mean that Maine is more in line with Lowell, Ferris State, Union, Minnesota-Duluth, Western Michigan and Miami?

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

The bracket s*cks, but it's nice that Maine fans are rewarded and get to see the team play in Worcester. If Maine beats UMD, I will consider this season a resounding success (I do anyway)........anything after beating UMD would definitely be some major gravy.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

I actually like this bracket. It's a challenge. Thats what makes it most interesting. Looking forward to playing UMD and hopefully giving them a run for their money. Saw them in Minnie at the FF last year. Great skating team. Now whats this BS about no TV ??

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

So what's the deal with Abbott? Is TIMMAH pulling a Belichik or are they releasing any info on his injury and what his chances are of playing next week?

I can't get ESPN3 so even if its watchable it doesn't do me any good. Hopefully WABI will step up and put on the broadcast? probably on the CW but anything beyond streaming would be great

Hegarty plays against top lines and was only on the ice for one BC goal last night, a pp goal.

hegarty will do ok in his next league

it will be very interesting for some maine fans to see Jack Connolly in person

If you have the right set-up.......you can connect to a TV and watch it on a flat screen. I wonder if any bars will do that?

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

So you mean that Maine is more in line with Lowell, Ferris State, Union, Minnesota-Duluth, Western Michigan and Miami?

He means that they don't have as much money as Union.

For years we've been worrying about what would happen after Walsh's passing and Grant's departure. Maine's success wasn't built on much more than success itself, and if you took that away, what would be left?

Sit down for a moment, if you aren't already. Because I have a secret to share. Those intangibles *did* go away. They're gone.

So, to answer your question: What I mean is that in the current landscape of D1 hockey, Maine is closer to being a nobody than to being a perennial power. A lot closer.

Tell me what Maine has?

Money? No. First class facilities? No. Winning track record (i.e., success breeds success)? No. Legendary coaching staff? No. Proximity to the BCHL? No. Proximity to the USHL? No. Proximity to OPJHL? No. Pipeline to the most elite Eastern prep schools? No. Pipeline to the national team development program? No. Proximity to major urban areas / media markets? No. Institutional prestige? No.

A 42-win season that's older than the kids that we're now recruiting? Yes. Dedicated fans? Yes.

Add it up, man. It ain't pretty.

edit:

So, while I've given Whitehead a hard time for not even meeting diminished expectations, I don't hold him to the same expectations as, say, Red Berenson at Michigan. And speaking of coaching - has anyone done less, with more, than ol' Red?

And Miami University? Seriously? That school has an endowment eight times the size of Maine's. They just put $36m into a new ice facility a few years ago, to go along with an aggressive, ambitious coaching staff. Blasi is a good coach, but Miami pays for it. Nearly half a million per year. If you're looking for comparisons for Maine . . . look lower. Western Mich is probably closer. UML is closer still.

I was told the home team bench is on the side of section 231. So, please, for all you going....buy tickets on the opposite side! ;)
