Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

This discussion may be moot -- if Maine doesn't clear Sully's rebounds, BU might break their losing streak against Maine in the HEA semis, and we won't have to worry about the strategic implications of playing an extra game.

For the sake of argument, I'll assume it's completely up to Maine whether they make the HEA finals, and that BU has no say in the matter. The way I see it, why not try to get the highest seed possible, advance to the HEA title game, and take your chances vs (in all likelihood) BC?

It would actually be more of a dilemma if the games were reversed. It's the BU game that will be a war. I'm guessing that Parker will be in full "the-refs-won't whistle-everything-so-hack-away" mode, especially after what happened last weekend.

BC will make Maine skate, but a week should be more than enough time to cure tired. It's the game that Maine is already playing that worries me re: reaggravating nagging injuries. And if you're going to play it, you might as well try to win.

Besides, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. This team has taken a nice step forward, but they're nowhere near good enough to be thinking in terms of turning it on and off at will.

I'm certainly not saying Maine should tank it or anything like that. I think if they do lose though it could turn out to be a good thing. As far as the bracket goes, its all luck. Maine could win the HEA tournament and get a worse bracket then if they lose Friday to BU. Its one of those things you can't control and have to go wherever the selection committee sends you.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

I've been trying to find clips from the 2004 triple overtime game with no luck.

Any help?!

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

(maybe Piotrowski would come out of retirement for that game).

I'm sure a lot of you guys know this already, but Piotrowski was named the head of CCHA officiating a few years ago... I nearly aspirated my beverage and died on the spot, when I first heard that.

(Yes, still looking for the slashing call on the MN goalie in OT. :o)

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

The odds are very good that if BU wins Hockey East they will be a 1 seed. The odds are 50/50 that Maine would slip enough to be a 4 seed. That automatically means a trip to either Green Bay or St Paul and a 1st round match with Michigan, Minnesota-Duluth or Minnesota (maybe Piotrowski would come out of retirement for that game). The focus is always on winning the tournament, but unless they want to be a massive underdog 2000 miles from home, they better win Friday night.

Even more ironic is that if BU wins and IS a #1 seed, they will have to be moved out of Worcester (because BC will probably still be rated higher and will get the #1 seed in Worcester). I don't believe that BU can pass BC in the PWR if they both make the finals. Those who know me know that I am an advocate of not even looking at the PWR until the day of the tournament selection, and it's just for scenarios like these. BOTH teams can actually make a case for not winning this...personally, I think it's always better to "just win, baby" (RIP Al Davis) and let the chips fall where they may. But the reality is, if BU finishes below 4 in the PWR they will stay in Worcester as a #2 seed. Not saying that's better, either, because then we have to go through BC. But is it better than Bridgeport, where we will most likely play an unfamiliar opponent (Union) on crappy ice? Who knows?

If BU is a #1 seed they will be in Bridgeport. If Maine is a 3 seed they can stay east, a 4 seed and they head west. Maine v Union in Worcester is the most common matchup I get but anything is possible...that's why they play the games!

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

I bet 2 HE teams are in Worcester regardless.

The prices are absurd, attendance has gone down consistently, etc.

$47.50, it is getting out of control and Worcester final is Sunday at 8pm.
They are really trying to make people stay at home:mad:

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Even more crazy when you consider the West game is at 5:00 EST

Seem so simple just to flip the 2 but what do I know?

apparently, more than them............it's obscene that it is that late on a sunday night. saturday, ok, sunday insane

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

So something has come up and I can't make the game Saturday. If anyone is interested, I have ONE seat - Club Section 113 Row A Seat 11 (club seats, right behind the loge, just inside the blue line). $35.00 (no Ticketmaster fees). If you want to wait until you see if your team wins, I can meet you after the game Friday night. Let me know and we'll arrange. If you think you may be interested, reply and I'll give you my email.

Re: Maine thread (cont) - Hobey Abbott goes Dancing

Definitely deserved. It would have been a real injustice if Abbott hadn't made the final 10.

Next step: Hobey Hattrick. Then Hobey?

Well you know what, even though he didn't win the scoring title by the dominate mark Nyquist did, and Nyquist didn't win... I think Abbott is better setup to win Hobey.

For one, No matter WHAT they say publically: Class Matters. When Paul Kariya has a 100 point season (90+ by the time the decision was made), their hands are tied. But otherwise, seniority matters.

The biggest factors are: Stats, Class, Scenario *meaning...did you propel a bottom dweller to success?, or in Maine/Spencer's case, bringing a program in a drought back to the NCAAs etc*, academics, and value to your team *would your team succeed at the same level this year without you?*.

While there are some statistical arguments for a couple other players....Spencer has good credentials in all 5 of those categories.

If I'm a voter, he's a lock.
