Maine - the Golfing Season

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

I agree with your premise, but not the conclusion

On the list provided, thre isn't much HE at all, and the BlackBears are on the list 3 perhaps 4 times, equal to BC and BU,,,,,Add NESN and there will be more games on regional etc

CCHA and WCHA still have more coverage,,,less to do in St Cloud on a weekend I guess.....Bemidji is on ALL the time....go Beavers....

Maine picked to finish 5th by Hockey East coaches poll. Probably about right based on current knowledge of the teams. As history has pointed out numerous times, polls don't mean very much.

Maine could land anywhere's from 4th/5th or 6th place....UML & BC are the two top teams to beat in Hockey East Regular Season play...BC the team to beat in the playoffs...Providence & UNH will be the surprise teams this season(imo)...Maine needs the goaltending to be solid and not streaky and the d-men to be good and solid in there own end...for Maine to have a good season,goaltending/solid Team defense will be a must as the scoring will be down...they'll need collective scoring from everyone on the first 3 lines. Team defense will mean that the PK will have to be solid also.

What knucklehead in the media picked Maine to win the league?

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

On paper, this appears to be one of the best freshmen classes in a few years. Nine guys coming in and it's not far fetched to think that 2-3 of them are going to contribute immediately. Time will tell.

I did two stories at yesterday's media day.

Black Bears want more out of Anthoine

Nathan Fournier

ORONO — Lewiston native Mark Anthoine made an impact on the University of Maine's power play last year, but he is about to play a greater role on five-on-five situations this season.

Anthoine, now a junior, scored 12 goals — all but one were scored on the man advantage — and collected seven assists as a sophomore. But seniors Spencer Abbott and Brian Flynn have signed with the Maple Leafs and the Sabres, and Matt Mangene is foregoing his senior year by signing with the Flyers. That means Anthoine is expected to carry more of a workload.

Excitement building for Maine’s freshmen class

ORONO, ME –The incoming freshmen class for the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team has created a lot of buzz, but now it’s time to see what they can do at the college level.

“(The freshmen) will be a big part of this team and the seniors have done an exceptional job bringing these guys in here without babying them,” said Whitehead.

Very well done. I'm not sure about everyone else but this is probably as excited for a season as I've been since 2004. I don't expect a NC or anything but think we'll see a hard working group that is top four in HEA and makes the NCAA's. The team had a great attitude last year and I think it will continue this year. I know they're not very well liked but I think Timmy, Corkum, and Kerluke deserve a fair bit of credit.

The top article talks about Chad Denny playing for U New Brunswick.
I remember seeing him play against Sidney Crosby when they played Juniors.
Chad was a killer, as I recall.... 6'3, 225 and loved to deliver crushing hits... of course back then he was hitting 17 year olds.

I'm not as sold on this class as you are, but I'd be somewhat satisfied with another NCAA bid, and maybe not another one-and-done, once they get there..? (My bet is that they won't quite make it to The Show, though.)

It really seems that Corkum has played a key role in keeping Maine's head above the water; I'd love to see him get the opportunity to run the program for a few years on his own. I'm tired of seeing Maine as a pack-team, and it doesn't appear to me that Tim has the wherewithal to get them any further than that.

Chad Denny has played about 160 pro grames between AHL and ECHL, and is a 25 yo Sophomore..... I guess the dream dies harder for some than others....should be interesting skate againts a very mature Varsity Reds team on October 7 Bears will have 18 yo against former pros...will be a test, much more than folks may think

They could have a few good ones in Shore/Merchant/Hutton,a NCAA Bid is imo,on paper a long-shot...need at least 20 wins or Win H.E. in Boston in March...I'm not sold on Corkum as a Head Coach, but working with a "NEW" Coach that listens and takes in advice which can only help the team,is what I think Corkum could bring to the table and make Maine a better team...his intense and hard work ethic along with say a "NEW" Coach(Montgomery)would start to bring Maine back up and NOT in the PACK,play to win and improve, not being satisfied at maybe Home Ice Series in the QF's and once every four years to Boston and once every five years to the NCAA's. First 11 games will tell alot about this team...Quinnipiac(1);Notre Dame(1)either Army or UNO(1);St.Lawrence(2);Providence(2)BC(1);UNH(1)UML(2).

I wouldn't say how far a team goes in the NCAA's is necessarily reflective of how good the team is. Would you say the '03 and '05 teams were worse than the '06 and '07 teams? I don't really see there being many teams, if any, above the pack nowadays. There is a lot of parity and I don't see it changing anytime soon. I think it's been a team effort between the three coaches and they all deserve equal credit.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

When is the first practice? Tomorrow or Sunday?
Isn't Oct.1st the first time the Coaches can have a full practice,NCAA rule I think that they can't conduct a practice in full till Oct.1st/the Captains can practice the team before hand.

Pretty sure their "first" practice is Oct. 5th. Whitehead and his crew only get two hours per week with the team right now.

Denny only played 8 games for UNB last season. He was still recovering from a season-ending injury from the previous season in the minor pros when he arrived. UNB had a veteran defence last year, so it was hard for him to get ice time. Then when he was finally getting his game going, and starting to get his big shot on net, he broke his hand blocking a shot in a January game against Moncton and missed the rest of the UNB season and playoffs.

He's a big-boned kid. He's trimmed up a lot since coming to UNB, so expectations are pretty high for him this season. He plays pretty cautious/safe and doesn't usually go looking for the big hit (which the fans in Fredericton are dying to see). He has an absolute cannon of a shot, but doesn't use it enough. That game in Moncton, before he broke his hand, he absolutely smoked UNB's captain with an inadvertent point shot on the power play. Fortunately Kyle Bailey wasn't injured and came back (with huge bruise probably).

For me, Denny so far is a big success story. He grew up on an Indian reserve in Nova Scotia. You may have noticed few native kids make the NHL. They grow up amidst tons of tough socioeconomic issues. High youth unemployment, lack of role models, substance abuse, etc. Not enough make it through high school to university. Cultural issues ("homesickness") is one big reason why so many aboriginal kids leave junior teams or even university. Many around the AUS conference thought Denny "wouldn't last", wouldn't be able to "stick it out" in school. And he just quietly keeps proving them wrong. (Sorry, getting all preachy there, back to hockey ...)

As for former MaineIACS, Antoine Houde-Caron was a rock for UNB last year as a rookie. Not a big point guy, but the most consistent rookie, shift after shift. Tireless.

I'll be in Orono on Sunday, as well at UNB's game against BC on Saturday.
