Maine - the Golfing Season

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

as hockey related as anything Priceless Manager ever wrote:

for all of you Maine fans in the Southern part of the State, you might want to visit Yo Goody in Kennebunk... one of the owners is one of my favorite black bears, ever.
Bellamy -- take the time get meet him, he is one of the nicest people you are going to meet. (odd how the freight train hitters are such nice people off the ice... prestin is like that too).
It would be nice to see a Freight Train or two on this years TEAM. Rutt..? Hutton..? Cornell..?

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

That's pretty-much my take on him, KIA.

I think he'll generate mini-breaks and clear shots on goal with his impressive speed, but I don't many of those shots will find the back of the net, should he ever make it to The Show... If he improves his wrister, he might get a cup of coffee or two at that level, but NHL goalies just do not allow you to score on them via an unscreened shot from 20' with any regularity at all.

I will never fault a kid for taking his chance when it arises, but Matt still had too much to work on when he left Maine... There was probably some pressure exerted on him to get into the system ASAP, but I'm thinking that he might look back when it's all said and done, and wish he'd stayed in college as long as he could have.

Hope I'm wrong.

i'm pretty sure Jackson was faster, with better hands.... not as big, but Mangene is not "big"
and although only a few people seem to think so.. Aquino was even faster than Jackson in Aquino's first semester, prior to bulking up, neither one sniffed the NHL.. speed ain't everything.. but without it, a player usually ain't nothing

(of couse Aquino never went end to end like jackson and mangene... ya can't go end to end when you flat out refuse to cross your defensive blue line)

I could see mangene being useful in the NHL. He's never going to score a ton of goals but could be a great penalty killer and offer a little versatility where he can play on the blueline. It seems he has a great attitude as well.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

mangene has the burst and stamina that coaches are all looking for, and last year, when he moved to his true forward position, actually started to score his hands are going to be an issue, and his overall hockey IQ needs to continue to grow...he should have stayed aniother year...been the man and who knows what could have happened...signing bonuses and the prospect of NHL time are too strong a draw for some kids.....He has always liked to show he is a tough guy, but once some Sakatoon farm kid tunes him up a few times, we will see if he has the fibre to make the pro thing work I think he made a mistake, but respect his choice, and wish him all the best.....

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Yeah, Jackson could fly, and Bellamy had great wheels, too... But it often seems that the guys who really produce know how/when to slow down. Matt, not so much. But I am rooting like hell for him; there too few Bears in the NHL right now.

It comes down to Recrutiing...if you have no NCAA playoff exposure and do not make it year in and year out,or for that matter have a chance at a NC,then your talent level goes down...right now with BC at the top of it's game, winning and having a respected Coach then Maine will be hard pressed to compete for top talent, plus UML/Providence/Merrimack are improving Programs, plus add UNH/BU and Maine needs to broaden their recruiting trail...but as of late they stick close by,money reasons maybe, but plenty of talent out there....could be a change at the Top(Bench Coach)and with that with a New Marshall in town then he would change the mindset in recruiting along with even cutting ties with the present Assistant Coaching staff.

Dan k seems to be in charge of recruiting with "finds" like bill Norman ....tough to say that we have a real chance to stay equal with other major programs. Shore seems to be real deal, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then

Your right on that...!!! Yes hoping Shore comes in and makes an impact to go along with last years recruits...not that they were big scorers but they have promise.

oh, come on... give the staff some credit.
Shore is not the kind of nut that blind squirrels find. Jim Fahey at northeastern was. he had a real tough time with HS and juniors and northeastern took a chance.

Shore had to have someone tell him that Whitehead had the tools to get him to the next level. That is what is all about in the NCAA of the better players, not league playoffs and national championships. I can promise every kid who won a national championship who never played a season in the NHL would trade the ring for the thrashers jersey or the blue jackets jersey.

Oh come on KIA,you have to been seen and you need to be on Teams that work together to win games...Regular Season and Post Season. College Hockey is not a Development League where winning does not count...imo.

Maybe not to fans or coaches but are you sure about that with players? Especially guys who have a real shot at the next level. I think anyone who plays competitive sports wants to win but some of these kids see dollar signs and play with that in mind(Teddy Purcell comes to mind)

In my opinion college hockey is all about development. Looking for good students with potential to develop into very good hockey players is what fans and coaches both want. This will lead to wins. What fans and coaches don't want are players leaving early (playing two years). It is inevitable that very good players will leave early when they are shown the money, can't really blame them.

Add Andrew Sweetland to that list.
