Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

My god, think of the struggle to buy out one year of Whitehead's contract. And now Maine is going to buy out 4(!) years of Leaman?

I'm thinking Leaman's no-comment is: "I might be interested in the Maine job, but I'm going to have to hope that the next guy gets fired a lot quicker than Whitehead." :p

would there need to be a buyout by Leaman. If he were to resign he would merely forfeit his right to the remaining compensation in his deal. Unless there is some sort of punitive clause in his contract, but I have a hard time believing he would sign a deal a clause as such. Too limiting.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Phkit. I'm throwing my name in. No comment though, but in the interest of throwing Timmay further under the bus I'm thinking these players have got to play harder and be more accountable to something or somebody :)

oh yeah....selection committee and University pay attention here....I'm willing to do this for a nice round 100 grand a year. Basically you a coach for half price. :p

need an assistant? i don't quite have the recruiting connections, but i can play a great "bad cop" :D

Yes I do. Can you actually coach? Can you put your fist through a brickwall? Better yet, can you run through a brick wall? Naked. That would be high in my needs list.

yes, perhaps, and if enough money were involved!

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Heard Gene Reilly's name thrown out there on twitter.
Who does he coach for? Harvard? Campbell Blair is an interesting choice, if Corkum can't get away from Tim, I don't see how he gets away from the former Alaska coach(Shiyak?)

Currently a scout for Carolina. He has AHL, Euro, Jr. experience in addition to Maine, Harvard and Northeastern.

I really don't know - I don't have experience with coaching contracts.

In other professions, it isn't uncommon to have a noncompete clause or something like it. In that case, if Leaman were to resign, there'd be no punitive action -- the college wouldn't litigate him for breach of contract if he were retiring or getting out of the business...

...but if you sign a guaranteed contract for a fixed length of time, break the contract, and immediately begin working again in the same capacity elsewhere, in those cases there is an employee buyout.

It's not an uncommon practice in other fields. Admittedly, I have no idea if its a norm in college (hockey) coaching...

Who knows whats in Leaman contract but coaches move all the time, especially in Mens BBall, I'll bet leaman can get out of his with few issues

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Right. UCLA just hired New Mexico's BB coach. That coach had to pay a buyout to New Mexico.
http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mens...uins-hire-new-mexico-lobos-coach-steve-alford

It's not a big issue in that case because UCLA will pay him so much more than New Mexico did that the guy can just pay New Mexico out of pocket if necessary.

Maine is probably not going to pay Leaman (or any head coach) so much more than their old salary that they can pay the buyout out of pocket. Maine would have to pay it. And the odds of that happening are questionable, which was my point all along.

Leaman has
1. a very good up and coming team
2. six seniors leaving, only one of whom is drafted
3. the HCA National Rookie of the Year- Gillies
4. $$multi million renovation to Schneider

Can't speak to their incoming Freshman class but there are some big kids listed on Heisenberg's sheet. He's got a pretty good situation. I don't see him leaving all that to move back to Orono; although his one year under Walsh, '98-'99, as a volunteer assistant coach got him the taste of a National Championship.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

I really like that Corkum raised his hand and said I WANT this job. Fine.
I really like that Corkum has a lot of fire in his belly. Even better after the apathy we've watched behind that bench for the last 12 seasons.
Can you imagine if a call goes the wrong way and Bobby stands there silently, chewing his DoubleMint, with his arms crossed, head half down? NFW
There would be plenty of emotion... Be Demonstrative.. as gscott says.

The problem is this (besides the long-term Guilt-by-Association with Whitehead): the thought of taking the Assistant Coach and making him Head Coach again, and HAVING IT NOT WORK OUT, will be hell in its purest form for the Program, the AD, the University. You can just hear it--- "Didn't you learn the first time?" "How the he** could you possibly do something so STUPID AGAIN?" "W.T.F. are you guys brain dead?"
The decision to name the Assistant, right on the heels of just getting rid of the last one, has a stain on it before he even begins. Not Bob's fault, but it is the case, IMHO.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

A few things:

I talked to a friend of mine who is very close to Leaman who said he is quite happy at Providence. Sure, if Maine were to throw oodles of money at him he could change his mind, but Maine doesn't have oodles of money to throw at anyone.
George Gwozdecky should be at or near the top of the list. He isn't likely to go to Ohio State and Maine remains the top job out there. Again we get into the money thing, but none of the current openings are going to offer him a lucrative deal. He may take the year off and see if the Wisconsin job becomes available.
We should be hearing more about Guy Perron than we are. Either his name is being kept below the radar or the administration is genuinely not interested. They should be.
We can also go with a young coach who doesn't have a wealth of experience but has a lot of passion for the game. That would be Campbell Blair, Greg Hirsch, Scott Pellerin, etc.

We have a wealth of options for the committee to consider. They do not have to simply go with Corkum because he's the interim. If they decide he is the choice they are going to have a tough sell to convince the fan base (the people who are going to increase revenue to pay for TW's buyout) this wasn't what the plan was all along. If they pick Corkum it is incumbent on the team to get out to a quick start next fall or any enthusiasm gained by dumping TW is going to dissipate amidst calls for Corkum's head. I still say this process was bungled and is a huge disservice to Bob. The committee honestly can NOT pick him now lest that happen.

Why do you keep talking like the last time an inerm coach was hired it didn't work out.
5 or 6 kick a** years out of the gate. Maybe stayed to long but if Cormhm did what TW did first 5 years they would be pumped

If you are going to throw ex players names out there, why is not Weino mentioned? Why is not Peter Metcalf mentioned. Chit for that matter what in hell is Paul Kariya doing, is he not interested in coaching or has he had it with UMaine? I have no question Jim, not Jon, Tortorella would be interested. Red Gendron...an assistant interested in yet another NC ? I have to believe Nate Leaman has a lot more interest than a 'no comment'. Rick Bennett knows full well how electric the Alfond will get with good hockey played within it. There are countless possiblities, but what is the best, and how will they be measured against the one that got away?

Problem might be there is such a long list of candidates that most will drop out knowing full well they dont have much of a chance.
