Maine Recruits: When Ashes Fall, Legends Rise

Here is your homework for the week Blackbear fans. I went through the QMJHL looking for ‘04 that I thought would be headed to NCAA and might be at a level Maine would be interested. So go through and click the videos and let me know if you find any other good clips or info on any recruits you look into. Barr mentioned he likes the fact he can drive a few hours to catch CHL games so this means he’s been watching QMJHL.

Pretty good crop of ‘04s you picked out. A few of the ones on your list really stood out to me.

Yoan Loshing feels like he’d be the perfect replacement for a guy like Breen. Small but shifty with great speed. His vision really stands out in his highlight reel, both as a passer and a skater finding ways to get lost among defenders. Sounds like his defense and physical play need some work, but could pair well with a couple defensively responsible players on a line.

From what I read up on Dalyn Wakely he really improved his puck handling game this past season. Already good at the net front, nice to hear that his playmaking became more well rounded to compliment the rest of the game. Wakely also won the CHL Humanitarian of the Year award in 22/23 so from a character prospective sounds like he'd fit right in.

Kenta Isogai is one of those guys that plays the type downhill game that I like to see. Speed is really good and will translate well to the NCAA level and looks like he has a good nose to the net.

Dominik Rymon seems like a player that would do well in the transition game that Barr likes to play. Doesn’t seem like he has one area that he excels at but is structurally sound and doesn’t have any real weaknesses in his game. Would get a good player to round out the middle six.

Also wouldn’t mind a responsible two-way guy like Felix Gagnon either. Komarov and Pichette seem like they can handle their own and will be counted on to play some big defensive minutes in the coming years, but right now they don’t really have a definite replacement for the value they’ll lose down the middle when Scott/Renwick are gone. Gagnon seems like he'd make an immediate impact.

Little surprised that Riley Mercer has gone undrafted but he's been at camps for a few NHL teams (Montreal/Ottawa/New Jersey/Minnesota) so he could also be a solid pickup if Boija leaves early.

Side note on Beau Jelsma is that he played in 4 AHL games last season on an ATO so he should still retain his NCAA eligibility.

Not finding many highlights for Poul Anderson of Sherwood Park. He’s playing 1st line RW and is on a 3 game goal scoring streak where he has 4 goals. In hi last 10 games he has 7 goals and 8 assists. Very good production from Anderson. But that team doesn’t put out hardly any highlight content as far as I can tell.

Michael Munroe has been traded to Vernon Vipers of BCHL. He is playing 4th line RW. This has been a rough year for him. Went from USHL, to Sherwood Park in BCHL, and now Vernon Vipers of BCHL. He has been playing mostly 4th line roles and the highest I saw him was 3rd line LW. Big jump he has to adjust to going from NE prep to USHL and BCHL.

Jeremy Langlois formerly playing in the Q has committed to Maine. 6’1 LHD is a late ‘03 and was drafted by the Coyotes his first year of eligibility in ‘22 in the 3rd round. He was a ppg dman his last 3 years in the Q but has not played all this year because of injury. Massive get for Maine. Barr continues to build great d cores.

Also, I’ve wondered about Landon Sim for a bit. If it is true, he would be an immediate fam favorite in Orono. Prestin Ryan, Joey Diamond-leave it all out on the ice-type player. We will see.

Langlois looks interesting, fabulous stats in 23-24 in the Q, and also is a former captain of a Q team and a Memorial Cup champion. Utah let his rights expire and elected not to sign him, but when this news broke it was speculated in hockey media that he would have a lot of interest from other teams in signing him as a UFA. I was trying to find word on what kind of injury he had, but couldn't find anything; anyone know what happened to him?

A little more info on Landon Sim… he is son of former NHL and Stanley Cup Champion Jon Sim. He has a younger brother, Lane Sim, also playing in OHL for Sarnia Sting and is rated high by Nuetral Zone at 4.25. He has a second younger brother also playing hockey. So from a big hockey family.

Found a good interview on a podcast… https://youtu.be/Z2tsYrK4QE4?si=4A3A0eytUJFd2AA4

Says he wants to be like former Maine Blackbear Ryan Lomberg.

This is awesome news, he is a NHL 3rd round pick. He is a puck mover and offensive d man. Sounds like he needs work in his own end. Not sure what the injury is, but as long as he is back to normal it is good for Maine. I don’t know how it works though. Can he get a red shirt year and still play 4 years? Or does he lose a year of eligibility for not being in school last year? Meaning he might have only 3 years of eligibility. It likely wouldn’t matter because he seems like the type of talent that would leave early anyways.

More info on him:

Jeremy Langlois(Rouyn-Noranda(QMJHL)), LD, NZ 4.0, 6’1” 185 lbs, wore the C for Cape Breton, lead Q in goals by defensemen, offensive d man, PP QB, good puck skills, high hockey IQ, great outlet passer, quick transition, high end speed, strong puck skills, plays with head up, needs more work defensively

Landon Sim is a fun player to watch. Not sure how much you guys know about the CHL landscape in terms of the different franchises reputations, but London Knights are the top of the top. OHL champs last season, current record is 44-8-1. Landon Sim leads the entire OHL in first goals this season. Got super hot in january. He usually plays 3rd line LW, on a very deep roster, but played up the lineup during World Juniors. He wears an A for a reason- big heart and soul guy. STL draft pick in 2022, 184th overall, but I think his rights have expired.

The biggest potential drawback on Sim is his discipline issues. In particular, last year in the memorial cup final he took a major/game misconduct for an elbow to the head. He is also currently suspended for a major penalty. OHL can be pretty heavy handed with shorter suspensions for most major penalties. Last May he was controversially suspended 5 games in the playoffs for calling a player a slang for female genitalia (and body checking him) during warmups, London swept the final so he never got to play in it. This november he was suspended 5 games for calling a player a Mennonite.

He had a very severe shoulder injury he played through for 3 months in 2023. London lost in the finals, and he had surgery after, finally returned that December. That warm up scuffle that got him suspended in May was incited by the other player telling him he would break his (already sprained) shoulder.

As noted, his dad Jon Sim was a former NHLer- a former OHL player as well. since he's from Nova Scotia, normally Landon and his siblings would have been drafted into the QMJHL, but theres some rule in the CHL like if a parent played in another league they can supersede the location and enter you into that league's draft instead. (Ironically Lane Sim is now in the QMJHL anyways). I can imagine Maine being a big draw in the QMJHL, especially Maritimes natives, being closer to home for a lot of the players.

I watch a lot of London Knights games and he's always very noticeable– unfortunately it's occasionally for the wrong reasons. If he can reign that in, he could be a solid addition. Knights should go on another long playoff run, and are tons of fun to watch. He'll be back from suspension tomorrow vs Saginaw.

Thanks for the insight Cinnimaroll. I noticed he fought a lot, and can hold his own there. He won’t be fighting in NCAA. So then it is down to how many stupid penalties does he take? I’m surprised you can get suspended at all for calling someone a p*ssy, let alone suspended for the finals. I can see why it would be controversial. We shall see if he ends up at Maine. If so, I’m sure part of his fitting in with the team will be getting rid of the bad penalty habit.
