Maine Recruits: When Ashes Fall, Legends Rise

Maine recruit Kason Muscutt, who plays for Sioux City(USHL), got a goal yesterday after battling at the net front.

Another Maine recruit Zach Wooten got a hat trick for Green Bay(USHL), but doesn’t seem to be any highlights of it on the net.

Our old friend Blake James actually confirmed BC never offered Misa 1.4 million.

I subscribe to Mike McMahon's substack and he's pretty confident the most that players are getting is around 100k, and that's for first round draft picks like Matthew Wood's transfer. Still a lot of money, but nothing compared to basketball/football.

Glad to hear it is fake news. I was beginning to really think ncaa hockey is going off the rails.

Really like his first goal where he drove the far post. Love that because a lot of times even if he doesn’t score he can draw a penalty because the defensemen is draped all over him from behind. So many times we see guys not driving far post, they miss the net, puck rings out of the zone, numbers going the other way. I hear Coach Barr mention they practice that driving the far post a lot. Seems like a solid recruit.

When asked about how Barr will handle CHL players becoming available:

“The closest teams we can go watch competitive hockey(junior) games are CHL teams.” -Barr

“For us it has been great, if I have a weekend off I can go to a couple of games(QMJHL).” -Barr

“For the next few years I can see us getting the majority of our players from those leagues(major junior).” -Barr

Hey where did you see/hear this? This is a good nugget of info.

Starts around 54:54 the question about major junior recruiting. But the whole interview with Barr is worth listening to.

Coming from Barr, that sounds like a victory-lap comment.

Next year might even be better than this one.

How do they handle academics with major jr players? No more sat scores? or do they still have to qualify?
It is the same as any other junior league. Has same years of eligibility(<21) as junior A(USHL, BCHL, NAHL, AJHL, etc…). Whether you are major junior or junior A it doesn’t matter. All will have to do the following:

They all need to complete the following to be certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center:
  1. Graduate from high school;
  2. Complete a minimum of 16 (for Division I) or 14 (for Division II) core courses;
  3. Present the required grade-point average (GPA);
  4. Present a qualifying test score on either the ACT or SAT; and
  5. Request final amateurism certification from the Eligibility Center (beginning April 1 for fall enrollees or beginning October 1 for spring enrollees).
Step 5 is referred to as the “ncaa clearinghouse”.

Go to the academic eligibility section here: https://www.collegehockeyinc.com/faq/index.php#:~:text=You need to complete the,grade-point average (GPA);
