Maine Recruits: When Ashes Fall, Legends Rise

I wouldn't worry too much. Between the Portal, Major Junior and Barrs recruiting chops, I think Maine will be fine.

Not worried, just anxious for Maine to get some CHL recruits. CHL is on par or better than USHL, and CHL is 3.8 times as big of a playing pool as USHL since they have 60 teams from 3 leagues QMJHL, OHL, and WHL. I would expect NCAA teams to sign as many CHL recruits as possible right now to boost the roster(as other NCAA teams already are) and as importantly to make inroads towards a recruiting pipeline. NCAA teams that don’t recruit top overagers from CHL right now will effectively take a step back.

Seems like an excellent left wing. He wears the A on his chest so likely he is high character.

His stick handling and release seem exceptional. He can play at speed with puck on his stick.

Just a guess but I think we will see two more left shot forward from major junior, likely left shot centers.

Will Gerrior(Ottawa(OHL)) - DOB 3/2/04 - 5’10”, 180 lbs - NZ 3.75 - exceptional stick handling, agile and quick, plays with burst, feet constantly move, great with puck on his stick, quick release, deceptive shot, high work ethic, not shy from dirty areas

Great breakdown, thank you. I'm also curious what they do about replacing Breen/Scott/Renwick. I thought they might bring in a center for the second half, but since they didn't I wonder if the staff sees Russell as a center moving forward.

Transfers from the CHL will have 4? years of ncaa eligibility??

Yes. He will have 4 years of eligibility. Prospects from major junior aren’t really transfers because they didn’t go to college yet. For all intents and purposes the major junior(OHL, QMJHL, WHL) is the same as the junior A leagues(USHL, BCHL, NAHL, CCHL, AJHL, etc…) as long as the prospect didn’t receive money above and beyond their expenses. Meaning they can’t get paid a salary on top of expenses.

Found an article talking about how he has stepped up his game while another top forward left to play for world juniors for team Canada. Getting more ice time plus more usage and featured on the top power play unit.

https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/gerrior-commits-ncaa-school-142111045.html

Gerrior is on a 7 game goal scoring streak. His teammates nickname him “generator”. Seems like a good character kid. I also saw a couple of seasons back he was named to an OHL all scholastic team. So this means he is likely to do well in his academics at Maine too.

An Ottawa kid, so Freel maybe knows him. They played for the same U18 team but not at the same time.

Could be. It is likely he would know Grayson Arnott because of time they both spent at St. Andrew’s high school. Gerrior played with Grayson’s younger brother Callum Arnott.

I was checking in on Nicolas Wellenreiter who is also a Maine recruit and playing in OHL now for North Bay. He scored a couple goals recently in a game with highlights here -> https://chl.ca/ohl/gamecentre/27667/

Adrian Misaljevic and Brandon Whynott have committed to other schools, so I removed them from my watch list. I’m hoping one or two of these guys in the table end up at Maine. Maine has Will Gerrior as our first ‘04 commit from OHL. He has been playing off wing at right wing on Ottawa 67’s top line lately. Maine also has another OHL recruit, Nicholas Weillenreiter, that has worked his way up the lines and is playing top line right wing as of last game. Landon Wright is another Maine recruit playing in OHL for Kingston. Though he just started so it is a little early to see where in their line up he will settle. He has been playing top line RW for Penticton’s previously. In the QMJHL we have two recruits playing there, Jude Herron(Charlottetown) and Julien Wasmer(Chicoutimi). Herron has been playing center for Charlottetown’s 3rd line mostly. Wasmer has been playing LD on their 3rd paring.

Maine ‘07 commit Malachi McKinnon had a hat trick last night for Sherwood Park of BCHL.

https://x.com/BCHockeyLeague/status/1878265001330217315

He has been playing 2nd line Center for Sherwood Park. Fellow Maine ‘07 recruits Poul Anderson and Michael Munroe are also playing for Sherwood Park. Anderson is the 1st line RW. Munroe was playing in USHL, but recently left to play for Sherwood Park. His first game for them was last night. He is played 4th line RW. Likely he will work his way up the lines after some time.

Looks like Mikus Vecvanags has moved from Brooks of the BCHL to Acadie-Bathurst of the QMJHL.

Looks like he only got 5 games in at Brooks of BCHL. He is Montreal Canadians draft pick so I’m sure they want him in QMJHL anyways. He has played one game for Acadia-Bathurst Titans of QMJHL. I would describe it as a mediocre performance as he could do better on two of the five goals he gave up. The one he needs better rebound control. Another he let in a goal from long range where his angle is off and his reaction is slow. Take a look: https://chl.ca/lhjmq/en/gamecentre/31220/

I hope he gets more games with Titans(QMJHL).

There is an OHL prospects game going on right now. https://www.youtube.com/live/Su6N3lYs93c?si=bSDcUivJZPWyMNTP

Beau Jelsma is an ‘04 that is an exceptional player. Could be a great recruit for Maine or another school if he goes that route. He did do an AHL amateur tryout. However another commit recently also did and AHL amateur tryout. It seems that if they only had expenses covered they can still play in NCAA. I’m hoping Maine is recruiting him.

Some background info on him:
*************************

Beau Jelsma(Barrie(OHL)), 4/28/04, 2nd LC, NZ 4.25, 5’10”, 180, speedy, quick, agile, quick pivots to get to open, gets into dirty areas, playing hard-nosed, no quit attitude, quick and high velocity release, above average puckhandling, the heart and soul of the Colts, captain

Tomorrow night the BCHL is having their top prospects game. Maine has 3 recruits that will be playing; Poul Andersen, Malachi McKinnon, and Nate Yellowaga. https://bchl.ca/top-prospects-game-rosters

Malachi McKinnon(07 LW Sherwood)just got top player of the week in BCHL as he had 6 points in 2 games. https://bchl.ca/mckinnon-pirtle-glav...rs-of-the-week

Poul Andersen(07 RW Sherwood) is added to NHL central scouting midterm ranking where it is indicating a late 5th round NHL draft landing spot. https://bchl.ca/four-current-bchlers...dterm-rankings

Nate Yellowaga(08 LD Brooks) is only 16 and is our highest rated recruit in the pipeline according to Nuetral Zone. To be honest, it wouldn’t shock me to see him head to the WHL of major junior for next year. He was already drafted in that league to Red Deer. However, his father is the skills coach of his current team Brooks Bandits of BCHL.

Also, I noticed another Maine commit Dylan Lebret(07 Shattuck) is rated as a mid 6th round NHL draft pick. https://media.d3.nhle.com/image/private/t_document/prd/galrqu4rk4yauyqsldpd.pdf
