Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Here's Larry's article on Sullivan. This is going to be a very interesting development with 4 goal tenders going into the season. Who would have thought a few weeks a go that Maine would have too many goal tenders. Someone may get red shirted.

Eh...

if you're a redshirt, are you allowed to formally practice with the team? I thought that was a no. It's one thing to not see game time, plenty of dressed freshmen barely see time....but carrying a goalie who can't see action in practice is rough. If they are allowed to practice, then I'm a little less hesitant.

But still, all 4 of them have at least two years of eligability left, so if that was actually the plan....then what?

It's hard to believe Darling will be back.

you can practice, train and do anything but dress for a game.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Sullivan is talented, should be interesting. He's an 89 (turned 21 during the season) so I think he only has three years of eligibility, correct?

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

Bellamy was a pace setter, tone changer, and impact player whether he was scoring or not.... all 4 years.

Sure, whatever............................

BUT...just in case you were talking about numbers. Dek played on a team that had 8 20+ point scorers his senior year. Bellamy played on a team that had 1. Fair comparison? Bellamy was 3rd on the team in scoring that year, Dek was 7th.

But Bellamy played with the Wonder Twins, Dipsy and Doodle!!!!

Someone correct me, but age has really nothing to do with eligibility. Maine has had some pretty old players in the past few years.:D A player has 4 years of eligibility if the player has not sat out. A player can stay in school for a fifth year if that's the case. It's more about a player not playing for money before entering college.

Yes, age does factor in from what I've been told: If the player is playing junior hockey and turns 21 during the junior season it will impact things - would have 4 years to play 3. Just looking to confirm.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I have a good feeling about this Sullivan kid.

hopefully that feeling is reality. sure is nice to have too many options at this point. let em battle it out. if darling is a part of that mix, all the better. it would seem that having more guys competing for a job would produce better performance. i would still ride some sort of rotation for as long as possible. definitely excited to see what these guys have. next season just got a little more interesting.

I believe this is the applicable paragraph from the NCAA manual:

14.2.3.5 Participation After 21st Birthday. In sports other than tennis and swimming and diving, any participation as an individual or a team representative in organized sports competition by a student during each 12-month period after the student’s 21st birthday and prior to initial full-time enrollment in a collegiate institution shall count as one year of varsity competition in that sport. Participation in organized competition during time spent in the U.S. armed services shall be excepted.

Thank you!

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

I think that Jimmy Howard has done more to recruit goaltenders to UMaine over the past couple of months than anyone.......;)
But he said Maine’s track record of turning out NHL goalies, getting a chance to play in a quality league like Hockey East and the fact the goaltending position is wide open also contributed to his decision.

This passage direct from the article.

And Maine's track record right now IS Jimmy Howard. He's the only one, active.

it is safe to say maines track record is still light years ahead of the hockey east other programs by a factor of about 10 to 1

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

No worries, Sullivan has all 4 years of eligibility.

What do you base that on? It's contrary to what I was told (was looking into options for my '90 birthyear son awhile back)...and it was supported by the post with the link to ncaa rule book:

I understand that is the reason Bartus left St. Louis for UConn before Christmas this season...

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: The Search for Spock

That is false. Bartus left St. Louis because UConn desperately needed a goalie. Look up and down college rosters, there are dozens of kids who played junior hockey after they turned 21 and had all four years of eligibility. I mean just look at the UMaine roster, Dave Wilson turned 21 in March of his final Jr. A season and had all four years of eligibility. Or using UConn as a model since Bartus was brought up, their captain Michael Coppola turned 21 in January of his final Jr. A season and he also had all four years of eligibility. I also found a number of other similar examples of this as well, just take a look around some rosters.

Overage players are considered to be 20 year olds despite the fact that they turned 21 during their season. USA hockey or Hockey Canada wouldn't deliberately sabotage a kids NCAA eligibility. The rule is based solely on birth year and an 89 this year would not lose a year of eligibility, however an 89 birth year next year would. Another way to lose a year of eligibility is if you take too many classes.

I know this because of the Colin Shields issue a few years back. I knew Colin from before he went to Maine. Since he was in the states playing Junior hockey in Cleveland on a student visa, he had to be enrolled in a school (high school or college) full time. Since he graduated high school the year before, he took a full course load at a local community college so he could stay in the country legally. However, he took too many classes because he was forced to with the visa, and he was docked a year of eligibility at Maine.

Hope if clarifies any issues.
